This paper examines the influence of aSargassum forest on the pH distribution in a small cove facing Wakasa Bay. The diurnal changes in spatial distribution of density and pH were observed in May 1977 during the season of luxuriant seaweed growth, and in August 1977 during the season of little growth. The observations were made at three-hour intervals for 24 hr in May, and 9 hr in August. During the period of strong density stratification, the observed pH distributions were divided into two types: (1) lower pH inshore and higher offshore in the upper layer in the evening and early morning, and (2) higher pH inshore and lower offshore in the daytime. During the period of weak stratification, a homogeneous pH distribution was observed. The pH distribution influenced bySargassum forest during the season of luxuriant growth was different from that during the season of little growth. The process that brought these spatial distributions is discussed. From early dawn to forenoon during the season of luxuriant growth, the heavier water, produced inshore by cooling through nocturnal radiation, cascaded as a stable laminar flow under the lighter water remaining under canopies of the forest and detached floating seaweeds. Reaching the offshore lower layer, and co-acting with algal respiration, this cascade influenced pH distribution. Some dynamical parameters for the process of cascading are calculated and examined.  相似文献

The authors have verified a regression model for the evaluation of the daily amplitude of sea surface temperature (ΔSST) proposed by Kawai and Kawamura (2002). The authors investigated the accuracy of satellite data used for the evaluation and showed that ΔSST error caused by satellite data error is less than ±0.7 K. The evaluated ΔSSTs were compared with in situ values. Its root-mean-square error is about 0.3 K or less, except for a coastal region, and it has a bias of more than +0.1 K in the tropics. This bias can be removed by considering latent heat flux. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Kawai (1976, 1979) derived two simple relations among the apparent diffusivity (based on the geometric-average variance for principal axes of spreading) for many surface drifters in a patch and horizontal divergence and isotropic turbulent diffusivity for ambient water. By a new term medley diffusivity is meant an average of the products of the position coordinates relative to the centroid of drifters and the residual velocity, that is, the velocity left by subtracting the mean velocity and the velocity due to the linear velocity gradient from the velocity of a drifter. Regarding the medley diffusivity as the isotropic turbulent diffusivity that is weighted anisotropically according to drifters spreading along each of the principal axes, this paper derives a new relation with a form intermediate between the above two relations. Using the relation, this paper defines the new critical period within which the effect of horizontal divergence on the apparent diffusion surpasses that of isotropic turbulent diffusion, and discusses the time-scales on which the space-scale dependence of the squared divergence (Kawai, 1985b) is based. Stretching of a patch of drifters and deviation of drifters' position from the bivariate normal distribution enhance the effect of isotropic turbulent diffusion on the apparent diffusion. This stretching effect is equivalent to the shear effect on a horizontal plane. Remarks on reducing errors in the estimation of isotropic turbulent diffusivity are made.  相似文献

Detailed observations were performed of the wind-exerted surface flow, before and after the generation of wind waves. As flow visualization techniques, 6 classes of polystyrene beads of from 0.33 mm to 1.93 mm in diameter, with a specific gravity of 0.99, and also, hydrogen bubble lines, were used. Experiments were carried out at three ranges of the wind speed: 4.0, 6.2 and 8.6ms–1 in the mean in the wind-wave tunnel section, and the observations were made at 2.85 m in fetch. In the case of 6.2 m s–1, when the initial surface skin flow attains 0.22 cm in the scale thickness and 16 cm s–1 in the surface velocity in about 3 second from the onset of the wind, regular waves of about 1.7 cm in wave length appear on the water surface. In one second after that, the downward thrust of the surface flow and the consequent forced convection commences, and the transition of the surface layer to a turbulent state occurs. Ordinary wind waves begin to develop from this state. In developed wind waves the viscous skin flow grows on the windward side of the crests, frequently producing macroscopic skin flows, and these skin flows converge to make a downward thrust at the lee side, and the viscous skin layer disappears there. The velocity of the downward flow has a maximum at the phase of about 30, and the value is of the order of 10 cm s–1 at 4-mm depth after the orbital velocity of the sinusoidal wave is subtracted. As the process through which the wind stress acts on the water surface, it is considered that the following particular one may be real: the skin friction concentrated at the windward side of the crest produces skin flows, which thrust into the inner region to make the forced convection, carrying the acquired momentum. The viscous shearing stress just before the generation of the surface undurations was about 1/4 of the total shearing stress under the existence of wind waves. It is considered that the increase of the wind stress by wind waves is caused by this mechanism.  相似文献

Linear and nonlinear computations of the 1992 Nicaragua earthquake tsunami   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
Numerical computations of tsunamis are made for the 1992 Nicaragua earthquake using different governing equations, bottom frictional values and bathymetry data. The results are compared with each other as well as with the observations, both tide gauge records and runup heights. Comparison of the observed and computed tsunami waveforms indicates that the use of detailed bathymetry data with a small grid size is more effective than to include nonlinear terms in tsunami computation. Linear computation overestimates the amplitude for the later phase than the first arrival, particularly when the amplitude becomes large. The computed amplitudes along the coast from nonlinear computation are much smaller than the observed tsunami runup heights; the average ratio, or the amplification factor, is estimated to be 3 in the present case when the grid size of 1 minute is used. The factor however may depend on the grid size for the computation.  相似文献

Two short geomagnetic episodes in the middle Matuyama epoch have been identified within thin (4.3-mm) sections of two deep-sea calcareous sediment cores taken in the western equatorial Pacific. Both cores are correlated by magnetostratigraphic and micropaleontological methods. Magnetic stability and paleomagnetic reliability are tested by alternating field demagnetization of natural remanent magnetization as well as by the ratios of intensities of anhysteretic remanent magnetization to those of saturation isothermal remanent magnetization. One episode is dated to be 1.06 m.y. BP. The other is identified to be about 1.94 m.y. BP, which is presumably in agreement with the Reunion event. Both episodes seem to be accompanied by conspicuous drops in field intensity. Possible correlation of field intensity with biological productivity in the ocean is also postulated from the present paleomagnetic results.  相似文献

Pressure effects on the lattice parameters of β- and γ-Mg2SiO4 have been measured at room temperature and at pressures up to 100 kbar using a multi-anvil high-pressure X-ray diffraction apparatus. The volume changes (ΔV/V0) at 90 kbar are 5.4 · 10?2 and 4.2 · 10?2 for β- and γ-Mg2SiO4, respectively. Isothermal bulk moduli at zero pressure have been calculated from least-square fits of the data to straight lines. They turn out to be 1.66 ± 0.4 and 2.13 ± 0.1 Mbar for β- and γ-Mg2SiO4, respectively. The α → γ transition obeys Wang's linear Vφ?ρ relation but the αβ transition does not.  相似文献
