The global rise in atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations calls for practicable solutions to capture CO2. In this study, a mineral carbonation process was applied in which CO2 reacts with alkaline lignite ash and forms stable carbonate solids. In comparison to previous studies, the assays were conducted at low temperatures and pressures and under semi-dry reaction conditions in an 8 L laboratory mixing device. In order to find optimum process conditions the pCO2 (10-20%), stirring rate (500-3000 rpm) and the liquid to solid ratio (L/S = 0.03-0.36 L kg−1) were varied. In all experiments a considerable CO2 uptake from the gas phase was observed. Concurrently the solid phase contents of Ca and Mg (hydr)oxides decreased and CaCO3 and MgCO3 fractions increased throughout the experiments, showing that CO2 was stabilized as a solid carbonate. The carbonation reaction depends on three factors: Dissolution of CO2 in the liquid phase, mobilization of Ca and Mg from the mineral surface and precipitation of the carbonate solids. Those limitations were found to depend strongly on the variation of the process parameters. Optimum reaction conditions could be found for L/S ratios between 0.12 and 0.18, medium stirring velocities and pCO2 between 10% and 20%.Maximum CO2 uptake by the solid phase was 4.8 mmol g−1 after 120 min, corresponding to a carbonation efficiency for the alkaline material of 53% of the theoretical CO2 binding capacity. In comparison to previous studies both CO2 uptake and carbonation efficiencies were in a similar range, but the reaction times in the semi-dry process were considerably shorter. Depth profiles of dissolved zinc were measured monthly over one year in Lake Greifen, a eutrophic lake. The concentrations are in the range 10–40 nM and show systematic variations over time and depth. Due to the increased binding to particles and subsequent settling, concentrations of zinc in the epilimnion decrease during summer stagnation. Clear correlations between Zn and major nutrients (P, Si) are, however, not observed in the water column. No accumulation of Zn occurs in the anoxic hypolimnion. The Zn sedimentation is related to the sedimentation of algae and of manganese oxide. A mass-balance calculation shows that 87% of the Zn input is retained in the sediments of Lake Greifen. 相似文献

Air circulation due to the urban heat island (UHI) effect can influence the dispersion of air pollutants in a metropolis. This study focusses on the influence of the UHI effect on particulate matter (PM; including PM2.5 and PM2.5–10) between May and September 2010–2012 in the Taipei basin. Meteorological and PM data were obtained from the sites, owned by the governmental authorities. The analysis was carried out using t test, relative indices (RIs), Pearson product–moment correlation and stepwise regression. The results show that the RI values for PM were the highest at moderate UHI intensity (MUI; 2 °C ≤ UHI < 4 °C) rather than at strong UHI intensity (SUI; 4 °C ≤ UHI) during the peak time for anthropogenic emissions (20:00 LST). Neither the accumulation of PM nor the surface convergence occurred in the hot centre, as shown by the case study. At MUI, more than 89 % of the synoptic weather patterns showed that the weather was clear and hot or that the atmosphere was stable. The variation in PM was associated with horizontal and vertical air dispersion. Poor horizontal air dispersion, with subsidence, caused an increase in PM at MUI. However, the updraft motion diluted the PM at SUI. The stepwise regression models show that the cloud index and surface air pressure determined the variation in PM2.5–10, while cloud index, wind speed and mixing height influenced the variation in PM2.5. An annually resolved and absolutely dated ring-width chronology spanning 657 yrs. is constructed with Whitebark pine (Pinus bungeana Zucc.) samples from the southern Taihang Mountains, Eastern China. On the basis of a significant correlation between the tree-ring width index and observed instrumental data, precipitation in current May is reconstructed for the region since AD 1510, with predictor variables accounting for 37.9 % of the variance in precipitation data. In agreement with other drought reconstructions, notable dry spells occur in the 1630s–1650s, 1680s–1700s, and 1770s–1800s, whereas wet periods prevail in the 1530s–1570s, 1840s–1870s, and 1950s-present. Wavelet analysis reveals clear 2–8, 20–40, and 80–130 yrs cycles at the 95 % confidence level for the reconstructed series over the past 500 yrs, suggesting possible linkages with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Correlation analysis between the tree-ring series, ENSO, and PDO index further demonstrates that precipitation is negatively correlated with PDO and ENSO in the long term. 相似文献

The interannual variability of precipitation and temperature is derived from all runs of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) fourth Assessment Report (AR4)-based two Atmospheric Oceanic General Circulation Model (AOGCM) simulations, over Pakistan, on an annual basis. The models are the CM2.0 and CM2.1 versions of Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL)-based AOGCM. Simulations for a recent 22-year period (1979–2000) are validated using Climate Research Unit (CRU) and NCEP/NCAR datasets over Pakistan, for the first time. The study area of Pakistan is divided into three regions: all Pakistan, northern Pakistan, and southern Pakistan. Bias, root mean square error, one sigma standard deviation, and coefficient of variance are used as validation metrics. For all Pakistan and northern Pakistan, all three runs of GFDL-CM2.0 perform better under the above metrics, both for precipitation and temperature (except for one sigma standard deviation and coefficient of variance), whereas for southern Pakistan, third run of GFDL-CM2.1 perform better expect for the root mean square error for temperature. A mean and variance-based bias correction is applied to bias in modeled precipitation and temperature variables. This resulted in a reduced bias, except for the months of June, July, and August, when the reduction in bias is relatively lower. 相似文献

ABSTRACTFigures such as maps and time series are essential means to visualize spatiotemporal results in scientific papers. Being able to recompute them using the underlying source code and data is thus a core aspect in reproducible research. However, many scientists see the preparation of code and data for publication as an additional burden without immediate benefits. In this work, we investigate advantages and new capabilities of reproducible research papers. Our key contributions are (i) the extension of a geoscientist’s workflow while examining papers including reproducible figures such as maps and (ii) the prototypical implementation of the workflow as a web application. The workflow is based on current practices of geoscientists and encapsulates benefits of reproducible figures. It is informed by ideas and needs identified by geoscientists in a survey, interviews, and a focus group. Based on their statements, we first extend the traditional workflow steps Discovery and Inspection by additional capabilities and propose two new steps: Manipulation of the content of a spatiotemporal figure and Substitution of the underlying code and data. The extended workflow and its implementation might facilitate in-depth examination and reusability of geoscientific results. 相似文献

The authors describe a series of programs designed for the automated production of thematic relief maps. More specifically, a digital terrain model of a test site in northeastern Hungary provided raw data used in interactive processing and plotting of maps on relief (energy), slope angle, slope exposure or orientation, and tectonic structure lines. Applications in soil conservation, agroclimatology, and forestry are described briefly. Some recent developments in the study of relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei and microquasars are reviewed. While
it has been well established for some time that extragalactic jets found in radio galaxies, quasars, and BL Lac objects are
the site of ultrarelativistic particle acceleration, the recent identification of the Galactic jet source and microquasar
LS~5039 as a source of very-high-energy gamma-ray emission has underlined the striking similarity between the two types of
astrophysical jet sources. In this paper, I will present an overview of the dominant radiation and particle acceleration processes
and observational tests to distinguish between such processes. The wide-ranging analogies between Galactic and extragalactic
jets, but also their distinct differences, in particular those caused by the presence of the companion star in Galactic microquasar

A simulation study of the energy released in air due to the development of an extensive air shower has been carried out using the CORSIKA code. The contributions to the energy release from different particle species and energies as well as the typical particle densities are investigated. Special care is taken of particles falling below the energy threshold of the simulation which contribute about 10% to the total energy deposition. The dominant contribution to the total deposition stems from electrons and positrons from sub-MeV up to a few hundred MeV, with typical transverse distances between particles exceeding 1 mm for 10 EeV showers. 相似文献
