Summary. Detailed palaeomagnetic results from a rapidly deposited 12.5-m Younger Yoldia Clay sequence of age around 14 000 B.P. at the coast cliff at Nørre Lyngby (northern Jutland, Denmark) and a 2-m Older Yoldia Clay sequence of age somewhere between 23 000 and 40 000 B.P. are presented and discussed. The Younger Yoldia Clay spans some 1000–1500 yr and shows swings in inclination and declination of about that period, and also more rapid oscillations which are particularly marked in inclination, showing that rapid secular variations as have occurred during historic times were indeed also present back in time. There exist easterly declinations of 80° to 90° in the upper half of the Younger Yoldia Clay which cause the virtual geomagnetic pole to migrate clockwise to around 50° away from the rotation pole. This we name the 'Nørre Lyngby declination excursion'.
In the Older Yoldia Clay, as well as secular variations in both declination and inclination, significant low inclination values are found, confirming the existence of the recently named 'Rubjerg low inclination excursion', with the virtual geomagnetic pole moving first in a clockwise then in an anticlockwise sense at 40° to 60° away from the rotation pole.
It is therefore inferred that models for the Earth's geomagnetic field should involve at least local rapid eastward as well as westward 'drift' of the non-dipole field components at various times in the past. 相似文献

Knowledge of the tectonic history of the Pamir contributes to our understanding of both the evolution of collisional orogenic belts as well as factors controlling Central Asian aridification. It is, however, not easy to decipher the Mesozoic–Cenozoic tectonics of the Pamir due to extensive Neogene deformation in an orogen that remains largely understudied. This study reports detrital apatite and zircon fission-track (FT) ages from both the eastern Tajik Basin sedimentary rocks and Pamir modern river sands. These FT data, supported by vitrinite reflectance and zircon and apatite U–Pb double dating, suggest that the majority of the FT ages are unreset and record exhumation stages of the Pamir, which has served as the source terrane of the Tajik Basin since the Cretaceous. Furthermore, we combine the new data with a compilation of published detrital apatite and zircon FT data from both the Tajik Basin sedimentary rocks and Pamir modern river sands, to explore the Mesozoic–Cenozoic tectonic history of Pamir. Deconvolved FT Peak Ages document two major Mesozoic exhumation events associated with the Late Triassic–Early Jurassic Cimmerian orogeny that reflects accretion of the Pamir terranes, as well as the Early–early Late Cretaceous deformation associated with the northward subduction of the Neo-Tethys Ocean beneath Pamir. The compiled data also show significant Late Eocene–Neogene exhumation associated with the ongoing formation of the Pamir, which peaks at ca. 36, 25, 14 and 7 Ma. 相似文献

A global mean dynamic topography and ocean circulation estimation using a preliminary GOCE gravity model 总被引:8,自引:4,他引:4
The Gravity and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite mission measures Earth’s gravity field with an unprecedented
accuracy at short spatial scales. In doing so, it promises to significantly advance our ability to determine the ocean’s general
circulation. In this study, an initial gravity model from GOCE, based on just 2 months of data, is combined with the recent
DTU10MSS mean sea surface to construct a global mean dynamic topography (MDT) model. The GOCE MDT clearly displays the gross
features of the ocean’s steady-state circulation. More significantly, the improved gravity model provided by the GOCE mission
has enhanced the resolution and sharpened the boundaries of those features compared with earlier satellite only solutions.
Calculation of the geostrophic surface currents from the MDT reveals improvements for all of the ocean’s major current systems.
In the North Atlantic, the Gulf Stream is stronger and more clearly defined, as are the Labrador and the Greenland currents.
Furthermore, the finer scale features, such as eddies, meanders and branches of the Gulf Stream and North Atlantic Current
system are visible. Similar improvements are seen also in the North Pacific Ocean, where the Kuroshio and its extension are
well represented. In the Southern hemisphere, both the Agulhas and the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence current systems are well
defined, and in the Southern ocean the Antarctic Circumpolar Current appears enhanced. The results of this preliminary analysis,
using an initial GOCE gravity model, clearly demonstrate the potential of the GOCE mission. Already, at this early stage of
the mission, the resolution of the MDT has been improved and the estimated surface current speeds have been increased compared
with a GRACE satellite-only MDT. Future GOCE gravity models are expected to build further upon this early success. 相似文献

Extracting sources with low signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) from maps with structured background is a non-trivial task which has become important in studying the faint end of the submillimetre (submm) number counts. In this paper, we study the source extraction from submm jiggle-maps from the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) using the Mexican hat wavelet (MHW), an isotropic wavelet technique. As a case study, we use a large (11.8-arcmin2 ) jiggle-map of the galaxy cluster Abell 2218 (A2218), with a 850-μm 1σ rms sensitivity of 0.6–1 mJy. We show via simulations that MHW is a powerful tool for the reliable extraction of low-S/N sources from the SCUBA jiggle-maps and nine sources are detected in the A2218 850-μm image. Three of these sources are identified as images of a single background source with an unlensed flux of 0.8 mJy. Further, two single-imaged sources also have unlensed fluxes <2 mJy, below the blank-field confusion limit. In this ultradeep map, the individual sources detected resolve nearly all of the extragalactic background light at 850 μm, and the deep data allow to put an upper limit of 44 sources arcmin−2 to 0.2 mJy at 850 μm. 相似文献

The role of statistics in geography is now widely recognized, yet there are continuing suspicions as to the appropriateness of traditional methods. I review three computer-intensive approaches to significance testing of sample data. Using these methods, one can virtually always make some statement about the significance of a measure for comparing samples. Instruments on the Pioneer Venus Orbiter have detected a substantial ionosphere on the nightside of Venus during most orbits. However, during some orbits the nightside ionosphere seems to have almost disappeared, existing only as irregular patches of low-density plasma. The solar wind dynamic pressure on these occasions is greater than average. We have correlated data from several instruments (Langmuir probe, ion mass spectrometer, retarding potential analyzer, magnetometer, and plasma analyzer) for a number of orbits during which the nightside ionosphere had disappeared. The magnetic field tends to be coherent, horizontal, and larger than usual, and the electron and ion temperatures are much larger than they usually are on the nightside. We suggest mechanisms which might explain the reasons for the disappearance of the ionosphere when the solar wind dynamic pressure is large. 相似文献

This paper reviews the data quality and impact of observations from the FY-3 satellite series used operationally in the ECMWF system. This includes data from the passive microwave radiometers MWHS-1, MWHS-2 and MWRI, as well as observations from the radio occultation receiver GNOS. Evaluations against background equivalents show that the quality of the observations is broadly comparable to that of similar instruments on other polar-orbiting satellites, even though biases for the passive microwave observations can be somewhat larger and more complex for some channels. An observing system experiment shows that the FY-3 instruments jointly contribute significantly to the forecast skill in the ECMWF system. Positive impact of up to 2% is seen for most variables out to the day-2 forecasts over hemispheric scales, with significant benefits for total column water vapor or for temperature and wind in the stratosphere out to day 4. 相似文献
