We investigate the damping of neutron star r modes due to the presence of a viscous boundary (Ekman) layer at the interface between the crust and the core. Our study is motivated by the possibility that the gravitational wave driven instability of the inertial r modes may become active in rapidly spinning neutron stars, for example, in low-mass X-ray binaries, and the fact that a viscous Ekman layer at the core–crust interface provides an efficient damping mechanism for these oscillations. We review various approaches to the problem and carry out an analytic calculation of the effects due to the Ekman layer for a rigid crust. Our analytic estimates support previous numerical results, and provide further insight into the intricacies of the problem. We add to previous work by discussing the effect that compressibility and composition stratification have on the boundary-layer damping. We show that, while stratification is unimportant for the r-mode problem, composition suppresses the damping rate by about a factor of 2 (depending on the detailed equation of state).  相似文献

Two individual specimens (total weight 15.7 kg) of a new medium octahedrite were found near Ellicott, El Paso County, Colorado. The find is only 1.2 km from the find (in 1890) of the Franceville medium octahedrite. Ellicott and Franceville are distinct meteorites, the latter exhibiting pronounced differences in shock features, kamacite band width, and Ni, Ga, Ge, and Ir contents. Ellicott is a group IA iron while Franceville is in group IIIA.  相似文献

A theory (Barricelli, 1972) developed for the interpretation of planetary axial rotations is here applied to an interpretation of the axial rotations of major asteroids. The interpretation is based on the assumption that also asteroids can have satellite-systems, which may influence the axial rotation of the respective primaries. The reason why smaller asteroids tend to have slower axial rotation than the major ones as an average is discussed. Predictions of the theory can be tested by space-craft exploration of asteroids.  相似文献

An observational program to study variations of the vertical distribution of CO in the Venus atmosphere is presented. Measurements of the J = 0 → 1 absorption line at 2.6 mm wavelength are reported for two phase angles in 1977, one near eastern elongation (Feb.) and the other near inferior conjunction (Apr.). The two spectra are significantly different, with the April absorption line being narrower and deeper. The results of numerical inversion calculations show that the CO mixing ratio increases a factor of ~ 100 between 78 and 100 km and that the CO abundance above ~ 100 km is greatest on the night-side hemisphere. These conclusions are in qualitative agreement with theoretical models. In addition to the CO observations, a search for other molecules was made to provide further information on the composition of the Venus middle atmosphere. The J = 0 → 1 transition of 13CO was detected and upper limits were derived for nine other molecules.  相似文献

Geochemical and 40Ar/39Ar data on nine impact glasses from the Apollo 14, 16, and 17 landing sites indicate at least seven distinct impact events with ages ∼800 Ma. Acta,70, 6016-6031] from the Apollo 12 landing site and some Apollo 12 spherules reported by Levine et al. [Levine J., Becker T. A., Muller R. A., Renne P. R. (2005) 40Ar/39Ar dating of Apollo 12 impact spherules, Geophys. Res. Let., 32, L15201, doi: 10.1029/2005GL022874.] show ∼800 Ma ages, close to the accepted age of the Copernicus event, 800 ± 15 Ma [Bogard D. D., Garrison D. H., Shih C. Y., and Nyquist L. E. (1994) 39Ar-40Ar dating of two lunar granites: The age of Copernicus, Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta, 58, 3093-3100]. These Apollo 12 samples are thought to have been affected by material from the Copernicus event since there is a Copernicus ray going through the Apollo 12 landing site. When all of these data are viewed collectively, including an Apollo 16 glass bomb [Borchardt R., Stöffler D., Spettel B., Palme H. and Wänke H. (1986) Composition, structure, and age of the Apollo 16 subregolith basement as deduced from the chemistry of post-Imbrium melt bombs. In Proceedings, 17th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, pp. E43-E54], and in the context of diverse compositional range and sample location, there is a suggestion that there may have been a transient increase in the global lunar impact flux at ∼800 Ma. Therefore, the Copernicus impact event could have been one of many. If correct, there should be evidence for this increased impact flux around 800 Ma ago in the age statistics of terrestrial impact samples.  相似文献

Research on adolescent climate change perceptions has uncovered key insights about how knowledge, concern, and hope might relate to behavior and the potential for educational interventions to influence these factors. However, few of these studies have employed treatment/control designs that might address causality and none have addressed how these factors might interact to influence behavior. We developed a model of behavior change where a climate education treatment impacted knowledge, knowledge impacted hope and concern, and hope and concern together impacted behavior. We empirically tested the utility of this model and the causal relationships within it using a pre/post, treatment/control evaluation of climate education among adolescents in North Carolina, USA (n?=?1041). We found support for a causal relationship between the treatment and gains in knowledge, but not between treatment and behavior. However, we did find support for a path model in which climate change knowledge positively relates to increased climate change concern and hope, and increases in concern and hope predict changes in pro-environmental behavior. Low SES was related to smaller gains in knowledge, concern, and behavior. Our results contribute to a theoretical understanding of climate change behaviors among adolescents and suggest that climate education aiming to change behavior should focus on building hope and concern.  相似文献

The Paris Agreement (PA) emphasizes the intrinsic relationship between climate change and sustainable development (SD) and welcomes the 2030 agenda for the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Yet, there is a lack of assessment approaches to ensure that climate and development goals are achieved in an integrated fashion and trade-offs avoided. Article 6.4 of the PA introduces a new Sustainable Mitigation Mechanism (SMM) with the dual aim to contribute to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and foster SD. The Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) has a similar objective and in 2014, the CDM SD tool was launched by the Executive Board of the CDM to highlight the SD benefits of CDM activities. This article analyses the usefulness of the CDM SD tool for stakeholders and compares the SD tool’s SD reporting requirements against other flexible mechanisms and multilateral standards to provide recommendations for improvement. A key conclusion is that the Paris Agreement’s SMM has a stronger political mandate than the CDM to measure that SD impacts are ‘real, measurable and long-term’. Recommendations for an improved CDM SD tool are a relevant starting point to develop rules, modalities, and procedures for SD assessment in Article 6.4 as well as for other cooperative mitigation approaches.

POLICY RELEVANCE

Research findings are relevant for developing the rulebook of modalities and procedures for Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement, which introduces a new mechanism for mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and sustainable development. Lessons learnt from the CDM SD tool and recommendations for enhanced SD assessment are discussed in context of Article 6 cooperative approaches, and make a timely contribution to inform negotiations on the rulebook agreed by the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement.  相似文献
