From the temperature and moisture retrievals from satellites, two types of indices were derived: one indicating suppression of convection and the other indicating organized deep convection. Sea surface skin temperature and equivalent potential temperatures up to 500 mbar level of the atmosphere, derived from TIROS-N satellite products, are the basis of the two indices. The maps of these indices for various phases of 1979 monsoon are compared with percentage cloudiness, a product also available from TIROS-N satellite observations. Despite the various limitations of satellite soundings, it is shown that these satellite-derived indices can be used to indicate the strengths of atmospheric convection and inversion over the oceans.  相似文献

Zooplankton of the lake Jaisamand was represented by 50 taxa out of which 22 were Rotifera, 18 Cladocera, 5 Protozoa, 3 Copepoda and 2 Ostracoda. The total zooplankton exhibited a bimodal pattern with the first peak occurring in December and the second of a little less magnitude in June. The perennial zooplankters were Keratella valga, Brachionus falcatus from Rotifera, Ceriodaphnia spec. from Cladocera and Mesocyclops and Heterocyclops spp. from Copepoda. Considering surface zooplankton as a whole, Rotifera dominated the planktonic biomass followed by Copepoda, Cladocera, Ostracoda, Protozoa and Insecta. The species composition of the mid-stratum zooplankton was not much different from that of the surface. Interestingly, there was a presence of Cladocera in the anoxic bottom waters. The low and occasional presence of Calanoid copepods, the abundance of Cyclopoids and Cladocerans point to the eutrophication in the lake.  相似文献

The variation in the density of sediments with depth in a sedimentary basin can be represented by a hyperbolic function. Gravity anomaly expressions for a 2D vertical prism and an asymmetric trapezium with a hyperbolic density distribution are derived in a closed form. These are used in inverting the gravity anomaly of a sedimentary basin with variable density. Firstly, the basin is viewed as a series of prisms juxtaposed with each other. The initial thickness of each prism is obtained from the gravity anomaly at its centre, based on the gravity anomaly of an infinite slab with a hyperbolic density contrast. These thicknesses are improved, based on the differences between the observed and the calculated anomalies. For an improved rate of convergence of the solution, these thicknesses may alternatively be refined using the well-known ridge regression technique. Secondly, the basin is approximated by an asymmetric trapezium and its anomalies are inverted for the parameters of the trapezium using the ridge regression. Since this approximation serves to oversimplify the floor of the basin, it must be used only when the sediment-basement interface has minor undulations. The results of a hypothetical case and two field cases (the San Jacinto Graben, California and the Godavari Graben, southern India) are presented. In both field cases, the interpreted depths are comparable with the real ones, proving the validity of the assumption of a hyperbolic density distribution of the sediments in the two basins considered.  相似文献

The Sivamalai alkaline complex comprises ferro-, pyroxene-hornblende- and nepheline-syenites. Field relations show that the nepheline syenites followed the emplacement of non-feldspathoidal syenites. Mineralogical data on the syenite suite have been reviewed. The Sivamalai alkaline rocks are not strongly enriched in rare-earth elements like most miaskites. Rb-Sr isotopic analyses of a suite of six samples from the various members of the complex define an isochron corresponding to an age of 623 ±21 Ma () and initial Sr ratio of 0.70376 ±14 (2σ). This is consistent with a model of fractional crystallization of a parent magma derived from an upper mantle source with apparently no isotopic evidence for more than one magma source for the complex. The Sivamalai alkaline complex represents a Pan-African alkaline magmatic event in the southern granulite terrane of Peninsular India.  相似文献

The rainfall interception losses from Cashew trees were quantified, based on the records of 105 selected storms within the range 25.0 mm, occurring in a humid tropical region at Kottamparamba, India.

The storage capacity of the Cashew trees was worked out as 0.8 mm and the throughfall coefficient as 0.391. The trees under observation were 15–20 years of age with a leaf area index of 1.0–1.25.

About 31% of the storm rainfall for storms 25.0 mm was intercepted by the Cashew trees and lost to the atmosphere.

The measured interception losses from the trees were compared with the estimated interception losses using the analytical model of Gash (1979). The predicted interception losses from the Cashew trees were within ± 10% for storms with total rainfall 10.0 mm and within ± 22% for storms with a rainfall of 10.1–25.0 mm.  相似文献

Summary The flux of radiation emerging at the top and bottom of a realistic model of a cloud-free, plane-parallel, vertically inhomogeneous turbid atmosphere has been computed for different values of atmospheric turbidity and surface albedo in 83 unequal spectral intervals over the short-wave or solar radiation (0.285–2.5 m) regime. These computations have been utilized to determine the diffusely reflected radiation at the top of the atmosphere in the spectral interval 0.535–0.7035 m (which covers the visible channels of the radiometers onboard the Geosynchronous Operational Environmental Satellites and the NOAA polar orbiting satellites) and in the spectral interval 0.375–0.7035 m. The total global solar radiation (0.285–2.5 m) reaching the surface has also been determined. Simple linear regression relationships have been established between (i) the reflected radiation at the top and atmospheric turbidity and (ii) between the global radiation at the surface and the reflected radiation at the top. These regression relationships yield coefficients of determination very close to unity. The implications of this strong linear dependence of the reflected radiation on atmospheric turbidity and of the global radiation at the surface on the reflected radiation at the top to satellite-based studies of the feasibility of estimation of the insolation (global radiation) at the surface are briefly mentioned.With 3 Figures  相似文献

Shore-normal and shore-parallel variations in grain size statistics of beach sand have been studied over a period of one year along the Kakinada-Mulapeta coast. The southern beaches of this coast have been accretionary while the northern ones erosional since 125 years. The grain size gradings, beach and nearshore processes help in identifying (i) the Groins-fishing harbour beach influenced predominantly by the tidal regime. (ii) the Mulapeta-Vakalapudi beach influenced by refracted wave regime and (iii) the Vakalapudi-fishing harbour beach affected by both wave and tidal regimes at relatively subdued levels.  相似文献

An area of about 5000 sq. km. in the upper parts of river basin of Sun Kosi falling in Nepal has been studied using medium and small scale aerial photographs of two different dates. The temporal variations in relation to mass movements that occur in the study area have been demarcated. The areas which have undergone increased erosion by slope failure and gully erosion over a period of 22 years are evaluated. An attempt has been made to quantify the increase in area of mass movement taking the advantage of three dimensional model of terrain as seen in the aerial photos.  相似文献

Using the satellite derived sea surface temperature (SST) data for 1979 (bad monsoon) and 1983 (good monsoon), the SST variability for two contrasting monsoon seasons is studied. The study indicates that large negative anomalies off the Somali and Arabian coasts are associated with good monsoon rainfall over India. The strong monsoonal cooling in these regions can be attributed to strong low level winds and intense upwelling. The reappearance of 27°C isotherm off Somali coast in May/June coincides with the onset of southwest monsoon over India. Further, the influence of zonal anomaly of SST off Somalia Coast (SCZASST) and Central Indian Ocean Zonal Anomaly of SST (CIOZASST) with monsoon rainfall over India is brought out. The former is negatively related to the monsoon rainfall over western and central parts of India, whilst CIOZASST is positively related.  相似文献
