This paper argues that in generating perceptual meanings of social actors as data, researchers need to deal with multiple representations, identities and categorisations of their own and those of their informants. The need to also consider power dynamics that develop in the communication process between the “researcher” and the "researched" in the process of generating data is also emphasised. The paper suggests that an analysis of image‐conflicts can be used to reveal the “hidden meanings” during these research encounters and improve the quality of research findings.  相似文献

A new formulation is presented for the analysis of reservoir systems synthesizing concepts from the traditional stochastic theory of reservoir storage, moments analysis and reliability programming. The analysis is based on the development of the first and second moments for the stochastic storage state variable. These expressions include terms for the failure probabilities (probabilities of spill or deficit) and consider the storage bounds explicitly. Using this analysis, expected values of the storage state, variances of storage, optimal release policies and failure probabilities — useful information in the context of reservoir operations and design, can be obtained from a nonlinear programming solution. The solutions developed from studies of single reservoir operations on both an annual and monthly basis, compare favorably with those obtained from simulation. The presentation herein is directed to both traditional reservoir storage theorists who are interested in the design of a reservoir and modern reservoir analysts who are interested in the long term operation of reservoirs.  相似文献

It has been known for many years that depositional method plays an important part in the results of laboratory testing of clean sands. In this paper, undrained triaxial compression tests were performed on specimens composed of Nevada sand with 20% non-plastic silt content using a variety of depositional methods that include slurry deposition, water sedimentation, air pluviation, mixed dry deposition, and dry funnel deposition. It was found that there was a marked difference in the undrained behavior even though the density and stress conditions were identical. The conclusion was that the soil fabric was responsible for this result. Using the scanning electron microscope, a method was developed to examine and quantify the microstructure of silty sand. These results appear to indicate that there are internal particle structures in sand with silt and their relative quantities correlate with the observed macroscopic undrained behavior.  相似文献

The value obtained for the difference in radial velocity between components of a visual binary that is unresolved on the spectrograph slit appears to depend, sometimes, on whether the measurement is made visually with a microscope or by means of an oscilloscopic setting device. This apparent dependence has been confirmed by measurement of artificially produced double-lined spectrograms, and disappears for line pairs separated by more than 1.5 or 2 times the half-widths of their components. The dependence arises from blending of the two line profiles. There is some evidence that the results obtained from visual measures are affected by the scale of the image being measured. For this reason, oscilloscope measures are probably to be preferred; although their errors are sometimes larger, they seem to be more consistent. Errors arising from this sort of blending are not sufficient to explain measures of relative radial velocity of the components of some visual binaries, that differ widely from the predictions made from the visual orbits.  相似文献

Stormwater management increasingly recognises the need to emulate, to the maximum extent possible, the flow regime of receiving waters in their pre‐development state. Hydrological models play a central role in assessing the catchment‐scale impacts of alternative stormwater management strategies. However, because of the complexity of physical processes involved in urban hydrology, particularly subsurface flows, the predictive performance of such models is often low. We investigated how the structure of hydrological models influenced the prediction of urbanisation and stormwater management impacts on baseflow. We calibrated three conceptual models of the same reference catchment and compared the modelled flow regime from different stormwater management scenarios, using each of the three model structures. Scenarios were assessed using six metrics, characterising the whole streamflow regime and in particular baseflow. Although the three models of the reference catchment represented the observed hydrograph well, the most complex structure developed using a thorough diagnostic of the catchment behaviour better captured the change in hydrological regime during dry years. Predictions of baseflow changes due to urbanisation varied significantly according to the model structure. Similarly, the models showed distinct responses to the stormwater management scenarios applied, especially for scenarios involving infiltration of stormwater at source. Our results confirm the importance of predicting the consequences of land use changes with conceptual models that are consistent with the hydrological behaviour of the study catchment. Future work should help to quantify the uncertainties due to model structure and thus provide practical guidance to the use of catchment models for assessing stormwater management strategies. Coastal wetlands present particular challenges for coastal governance and for the implementation of the Ramsar Convention, not least because coastal areas are focal points of human activity and of governance ambiguity. Through the evaluation of Ramsar delivery at both national and local levels in Japan and England, the relationship between Ramsar implementation and coastal governance was examined. In England, Ramsar status is primarily treated as a nature conservation designation which limits the wider opportunities inherent in the designation. In contrast, in Japan, the Ramsar Convention is used as a policy driver at the national level and as a leverage to encourage citizen engagement, economic benefit, and wetland conservation at the local level. It was concluded that through the implementation of the Ramsar Convention in important coastal wetland areas, significant steps can be taken towards delivering integrated approaches to coastal governance.  相似文献

The distribution of living organisms, organic matter, and chemical properties in Mars-like environments on Earth can be used as a model to guide the investigation of possible habitable environments on Mars. This work aims to demonstrate that the place known informally as the “Mar de Cuarzo” (Sea of Quartz) in the Pampas de La Joya desert southern Peru (between 16°S and 17°S latitude), contains soils with characteristics similar to those found on the Martian surface. Using a multidisciplinary approach, we studied the environmental data, geology, organic matter content, oxidant activity, and microbiology of this area. Our data show that (1) Mar de Cuarzo is a hyper arid area with a lower concentration of organic matter than those found in the Mars-like soils from Yungay area (Atacama Desert in Chile), while at the same time having, comparable extreme environmental conditions, and very low levels of microorganisms. (2) The detrital components of the soils come essentially from the Andean volcanic chain and local outcrops of Precambrian gneisses and Cretaceous granitic batholiths. (3) The presence of microclimates, geomorphological features, and the high influence of the “El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO)” allowed the formation of exotic and heterogeneous chemical deposits in these soils, including iron oxides, sulfates, and other evaporites. (4) Thermal volatilization in these soils (using methods similar to the Viking and Phoenix instruments) shows high oxidant activity. (5) Labeled release experiment (similar to the Viking instrument) shows high degradation of nutrients added in these soils.Altogether, the Mar de Cuarzo area in the Pampas de La Joya is an interesting place for astrobiological studies as a new analog to Mars, and for comparative analyses with other hyperarid analogs as Yungay.  相似文献

In an attempt to better constrain the timing of Variscan HP-HT metamorphism in the SE Bohemian Massif we have dated zoned zircons from a garnet-kyanite granulite of granitic composition from the Dunkelsteiner Wald Massif, Lower Austria, by means of sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) technique. In order to combine isotopic information with crystal growth textures, CL and BSE images were systematically taken from the dated zircons. A characteristic threefold concentric zoning was found in many zircons. This involves pre-Variscan protolithic cores followed by two distinct metamorphic/anatectic overgrowth shells of Variscan age. The inner overgrowth shell is characterized by a weak CL but bright BSE signal, and yields high contents of uranium (0.1 to 0.2 wt.%). A pooled U-Pb Concordia age for this zone is 342.0?±?3.0?Ma (n?=?11, MSWD?=?0.12). The second, outer, overgrowth shell is always bright in the CL image, dark in the BSE image, and has generally low uranium contents (mostly <500?ppm). A pooled U-Pb Concordia age for this zone is 337.1?±?2.7?Ma (n?=?11, MSWD?=?0.22). These results imply that the Variscan HT crystallisation history of the Moldanubian granulites took place over a period of a few million years and was not an extremely rapid subduction-exhumation process. SHRIMP measurements in the protolithic cores yield a cluster of (sub)concordant ages between ??390 and 460?Ma and a few outliers at higher ages mostly represented by cores in cores. Core domains, which are large, homogeneous and with undisturbed igneous oscillatory zoning, yielded preferentially ages between 430 and 460?Ma. We therefore consider that granitic protolith formation took place at that time. The still older inner cores are interpreted as inherited into the granitic melt.  相似文献

We present a comparative study of genetic and standard fitting routines applied to the task of extracting reliable estimates of the rotational splitting of full-disc, low-angular-degree (low- l ) solar p-mode data at high frequencies. 100 artificial proxies of a 10-yr data base of observations made by the Birmingham Solar-Oscillations Network (BiSON) were used to test the two approaches. All sets were analysed over the frequency range from 3000 to 4000 μHz.
Previous work, based on non-linear 'hill-climbing' fitting techniques, has demonstrated the unfortunate tendency for full-disc estimates of the splitting to overestimate the true, underlying values at high frequencies. Here, we show that the resulting bias is less severe when a genetic-fitting approach is adopted. This is largely the result of the number of erroneous 'null-valued' estimates of the splitting being considerably reduced: these estimates are, in effect, re-introduced into the expected normal distribution of fitted splittings. We also illustrate the diverse control one has when using a genetic algorithm as a fitting routine; this diversity is shown to allow further refinement in the estimate of the rotational splitting.
Finally, we address the issue of the reliability of the formal splitting uncertainties returned by the mode fitting, and find that complications arising from the strong anticorrelation between the splittings and their error estimates are not alleviated by the use of the genetic technique.  相似文献
