The permeability of lunar soil simulant, JSC-1A, is measured over a range of bulk densities from 1550 to 2000 kg m−3. The corresponding viscous flow permeability is 1 × 10−12 m2 to 6.1 × 10−12 m2 for this bulk density range. Implications of these values on the contamination of regolith by rockets, on barrier/enhancement to bulk flow of ice, and on cratering are discussed. Although the particle size and shape distribution of the JSC-1A are extremely wide, the permeability measurements agree surprisingly well with the Carman-Kozeny equation. The results provide evidence that the Carman-Kozeny model could be applicable to other naturally occurring soils if effective soil properties are considered. 相似文献

Solar type Ⅲ radio bursts are an important diagnostic tool in the understanding of solar accelerated electron beams. They are a signature of propagating beams of nonthermal electrons in the solar atmosphere and the solar system. Consequently, they provide information on electron acceleration and transport, and the conditions of the background ambient plasma they travel through. We review the observational properties of type Ⅲ bursts with an emphasis on recent results and how each property can help identify attributes of electron beams and the ambient background plasma. We also review some of the theoretical aspects of type Ⅲ radio bursts and cover a number of numerical efforts that simulate electron beam transport through the solar corona and the heliosphere. 相似文献

The planet-encircling springtime storm in Saturn’s troposphere (December 2010–July 2011, Fletcher, L.N. et al. [2011]. Science 332, 1413–1414; Sánchez-Lavega, A. et al. [2011]. Nature 475, 71–74; Fischer, G. et al. [2011]. Nature 475, 75–77) produced dramatic perturbations to stratospheric temperatures, winds and composition at mbar pressures that persisted long after the tropospheric disturbance had abated. Thermal infrared (IR) spectroscopy from the Cassini Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS), supported by ground-based IR imaging from the VISIR instrument on the Very Large Telescope and the MIRSI instrument on NASA’s IRTF, is used to track the evolution of a large, hot stratospheric anticyclone between January 2011 and March 2012. The evolutionary sequence can be divided into three phases: (I) the formation and intensification of two distinct warm airmasses near 0.5 mbar between 25 and 35°N (B1 and B2) between January–April 2011, moving westward with different zonal velocities, B1 residing directly above the convective tropospheric storm head; (II) the merging of the warm airmasses to form the large single ‘stratospheric beacon’ near 40°N (B0) between April and June 2011, disassociated from the storm head and at a higher pressure (2 mbar) than the original beacons, a downward shift of 1.4 scale heights (approximately 85 km) post-merger; and (III) the mature phase characterised by slow cooling (0.11 ± 0.01 K/day) and longitudinal shrinkage of the anticyclone since July 2011. Peak temperatures of 221.6 ± 1.4 K at 2 mbar were measured on May 5th 2011 immediately after the merger, some 80 K warmer than the quiescent surroundings. From July 2011 to the time of writing, B0 remained as a long-lived stable stratospheric phenomenon at 2 mbar, moving west with a near-constant velocity of 2.70 ± 0.04 deg/day (?24.5 ± 0.4 m/s at 40°N relative to System III longitudes). No perturbations to visible clouds and hazes were detected during this period.With no direct tracers of motion in the stratosphere, we use thermal windshear calculations to estimate clockwise peripheral velocities of 200–400 m/s at 2 mbar around B0. The peripheral velocities of the two original airmasses were smaller (70–140 m/s). In August 2011, the size of the vortex as defined by the peripheral collar was 65° longitude (50,000 km in diameter) and 25° latitude. Stratospheric acetylene (C2H2) was uniformly enhanced by a factor of three within the vortex, whereas ethane (C2H6) remained unaffected. The passage of B0 generated a new band of warm stratospheric emission at 0.5 mbar at its northern edge, and there are hints of warm stratospheric structures associated with the beacons at higher altitudes (p < 0.1 mbar) than can be reliably observed by CIRS nadir spectroscopy. Analysis of the zonal windshear suggests that Rossby wave perturbations from the convective storm could have propagated vertically into the stratosphere at this point in Saturn’s seasonal cycle, one possible source of energy for the formation of these stratospheric anticyclones. 相似文献

There are several important wavenumber sampling issues associated with 2.5D seismic modelling in the frequency domain, which need careful attention if accurate results are to be obtained. At certain critical wavenumbers there exist rapid disruptions in the mainly smooth oscillatory spectra. The amplitudes of these disruptions can be very large, and this affects the accuracy of the inverse Fourier transformed frequency-space domain solution. In anisotropic elastic media there are critical wavenumbers associated with each wave mode—the quasi-P (qP) wave, and the two quasi-shear (qS1 and qS2) waves. A small wavenumber sampling interval is desirable in order to capture the highly oscillatory nature of the wavenumber spectrum, especially at increasing distance from the source. Obviously a small wavenumber sampling interval adds greatly to the computational effort because a 2D problem must be solved for every wavenumber and every frequency. The discretisation should be carried out up to some maximum wavenumber, beyond which the field becomes evanescent (exponentially decaying or diffusive). For receivers close to the source, activity persists beyond the critical wavenumber associated with the minimum shear wave velocity in the model. Fortunately, for receivers well removed from the source, the contribution from the evanescent energy is negligible and so there is no need to sample beyond this critical wavenumber. Sampling at Gauss–Legendre spacings is a satisfactory approach for acoustic media, but it is not practical in elastic media due to the difficulty of partitioning the integration around the different critical wavenumbers. We found to our surprise that in transversely isotropic media, the critical wavenumbers are independent of wave direction, but always occur at those wavenumbers corresponding to the maximum phase velocities of the three wave modes (qP, qS1 and qS2), which depend only on the elastic constants and the density. Additionally, we have observed that intermediate layers between source and receiver can filter out to a large degree, the sharp irregularities around the critical wavenumbers in the ω–k y spectra. We have found that, using the spectral element method, the singularities (poles) at the critical wavenumbers which exist with analytic solutions, do not arise. However, the troublesome spike-like behaviour still occurs and can be damped out without distorting the spectrum elsewhere, through the introduction of slight attenuation. 相似文献

We report the characteristics of the three-dimensional, time evolving, atmospheric boundary layer that develops beneath an
idealised, dry, baroclinic weather system. The boundary-layer structure is forced by thermal advection associated with the
weather system. Large positive heat fluxes behind the cold front drive a vigorous convective boundary layer, whereas moderate
negative heat fluxes in the warm sector between the cold and warm fronts generate shallow, stably stratified or neutral boundary
layers. The forcing of the boundary-layer structure is quantified by forming an Eulerian mass budget integrated over the depth
of the boundary layer. The mass budget indicates that tropospheric air is entrained into the boundary layer both in the vicinity
of the high-pressure centre, and behind the cold front. It is then transported horizontally within the boundary layer and
converges towards the cyclone’s warm sector, whence it is ventilated out into the troposphere. This cycling of air is likely
to be important for the ventilation of pollution out of the boundary layer, and for the transformation of the properties of

In zones of continental collision, three methods can be used to calculate the strength of the underthrust lithosphere: (1) a forward model approach to the Bouguer gravity field, (2) an inverse model of the gravity and topography using admittance techniques, or (3) a forward model of the stratigraphic infill of the foreland basin to estimate the cross-sectional profile of the downflexed plate. The use of reconstructed stratigraphy has the potential to yield values for the equivalent elastic thickness (Te) of the cratonic lithosphere at varying slices in geological time, and hence enable an insight into the longer term (10–50 Myr) mechanical behaviour of the continental lithosphere. Calculations of Te based on isopachs of foreland basin stratigraphy use sea level as a reference line to estimate the basement deflection, and therefore are limited to using stratigraphy which records shallow marine or coastal sedimentation. A new empirical approach is applied to evaluating ancient Te values using the reconstructed palaeocurvature of the basin in plan view. The radius of curvature of 12 curvilinear foreland basins is plotted against their documented Te values and shows a linear relationship. The maximum Te value for a given radius of curvature can also be plotted as a straight line. The palaeocurvature of reconstructed basins can then be compared with the plots, and estimates of likely maximum Te values may be obtained. During Eocene times, the underfilled foreland basin of the Alps was characterized on its cratonic edge by the deposition of Nummulite-rich limestones. Palaeogeographical reconstructions of the Nummulitic Limestones enable estimates of the palaeocurvature of the cratonic margin of the Alpine foreland basin during the Eocene. By comparing this value with the curvature of documented basins, it is possible to suggest that the European lithosphere underlying the western Alps had an effective elastic thickness of no greater than 17 km during the Eocene. It has been suggested that the transition in the depositional state of the Alpine foreland basin from an underfilled to a filled state during middle Oligocene times was linked to a thickening of the continental lithosphere associated with the effective ramp of the Tethyan passive margin. The Te value of less than 17 km during the underfilled stage combined with a value of 10±5 km for the later filled stage at 17 Ma does not lend support to this hypothesis. 相似文献
