Bamboo corals (Order Gorgonacea, Family Isididae) are attractive prospects for deep-sea paleoceanographic reconstruction, capturing trace elements in their calcitic skeletons that may serve as environmental proxies with subdecadal resolution over multi-century timescales. We study the reproducibility and fidelity of trace-element profiles (Ba, Mg, Sr, Mn, U, Pb) in a 420-year-old specimen of the bamboo coral Keratoisis sp. from the SE USA.Using laser-ablation ICP-MS to obtain multiple replicate profiles, we use spectral techniques to distinguish noise and irreproducible variations from fully reproducible geochemical fluctuations that are candidates for environmental signals. By quantifying variability between profiles, we assess the fidelity with which the corals potentially record environmental information.Barium is the most reproducible element in the skeleton, with large fluctuations along different growth radii reproducing to within 4%. Both Mg and Sr have very uniform levels within the coral, but display low-amplitude irreproducible variations that might represent an internal biological process. In the case of Mg, which has been proposed as a paleotemperature proxy, this irreproducibility would represent an intrinsic uncertainty of ∼±0.1 to 0.4 °C. Both Mn and Pb contain some irreproducibility superimposed upon broad reproducible profiles that may be environmental signals. Some of the irreproducible Pb fluctuations correlate with cracks and dark bands in the sample suggesting detrital or surface contamination. Uranium displays large amplitude variations which are not reproducible along different radii. This suggests that uranium cannot be used for paleoenvironmental reconstruction, and may show signs of early diagenesis - a possibility that could complicate attempts to date young Keratoisis sp. samples by U-series geochemistry.The highly reproducible Ba signal allows precise alignment of profiles and thus we can show that growth rate along one radius can vary by a factor of two relative to growth along a different radius. There is no evidence that this large variation in relative growth rate affects either the Mg or Sr incorporation. In addition, geochemical anomalies in Ba and Mg indicate that the very central axis of the specimen may represent a different mode of growth.This study suggests that Keratoisis sp. corals are imperfect recorders of geochemical information, but do contain reproducible variations which are good candidates for environmental signals.  相似文献

Multiple episodes of extensional tectonism dominated the formation of Mesozoic fault-bounded basins on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, the Irish Continental Shelf and the central North Sea. A range of structural and stratigraphic responses in the Jeanne d'Arc, Porcupine and Moray Firth basins support widespread synchronous tectonic controls on sedimentation during one of these episodes, the Late Cimmerian. Rifting was preceded by a phase of related tectonism during which subsidence rates began to vary across broad areas but without significant fault block rotation. This Late Cimmerian ‘onset warp’ pattern of subsidence is considered to have been essential in the establishment of restricted anoxic basins from latest Oxfordian through Kimmeridgian (sensu gallico) time and the development of one prolific layer of organic-rich source rocks. The most prominent and widely recognized structural/lithostratigraphic response to Late Cimmerian rifting was the deposition of sediment wedges. Tithonian to early Valanginian strata generally thicken- into northerly trending faults in the Jeanne d'Arc and Porcupine basins, indicating that extensional stress was orientated WNW-ESE across a very broad area. The misalignment of this regional Late Cimmerian extensional stress with local inherited structural fabric may be responsible for transpressional uplift of individual fault blocks in the Outer Moray Firth basin. Sedimentological responses to Late Cimmerian rifting were varied, though a common lithofacies stacking pattern is recognized. Variably thick conglomerates and/or sandstones were widely deposited at the start of rift deformation, while palaeoenvironments ranged from alluvial and braid plain to submarine fan even within individual basins. The relatively coarse basal sediments fine upwards into a second layer of commonly organic-rich shales and mark The widest variations in palaeoenvironments and sediment thicknesses occurred during the last phase of Late Cimmerian rift tectonism, though all three basins show evidence of decreasing water depths, increasing oxygen levels and increasing grain size. This lithofacies stacking pattern of relatively coarse to fine to coarse (reservoir/source/reservoir) and the development of bounding unconformities are largely attributable to progressive changes in rift-controlled subsidence. Rift basin subsidence rates are interpreted to increase from a low at initiation of faulting to a mid-rift peak, followed by slowing subsidence to the end of extension. A number of counteracting crustal mechanisms that may account for progressive variations in rift-induced subsidence are considered.  相似文献

A Lagrangian (Rayleigh) distillation model is used to track the evolution of stable isotopes in precipitation over mountainous terrain from the Pacific Coast of Canada to two alpine field sites in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Precipitation δ18O at Vancouver constrains the model and air–mass back trajectories provide the water vapour pathway for 10 winter storm events. Isotopic values along storm pathways are modelled with a classical Rayleigh model that prescribes a linear decrease in temperature and pressure from initial to final conditions, and two models that account directly for orographic precipitation processes by: (i) applying an orographic rainfall model and (ii) using North American Regional Reanalysis data to calculate the change in vapour content along storm pathways. All models are significant predictors of snowpack δ18O, but the orographic model provides the best fit to precipitation‐weighted δ18O for each storm. The improvement in modelled δ18O by accounting for terrain along storm trajectories illustrates the need to account for orographically driven moisture loss when modelling vapour transport to ice core sites with mountainous upwind terrain. This paper contains the report of the IAU Working Group on Cartographic Coordinates and Rotational Elements of the Planets and Satellites as presented at the XVIIIGeneral Assembly held at Patras, Greece, 1982. Tables give the recommended values for the direction of the north poles of rotation and the prime meridians of the planets and satellites referred to both the B1950 and J2000 standard coordinate systems. The mesopelagic community of fishes and squids are fundamental in the diet of apex predators, but in most cases their life histories and habitat requirements are poorly understood. In May 1999, a pilot study was conducted to identify mesopelagic nekton, describe dominant physical characteristics of their habitat, and compare their relative abundances over several study sites in the southeastern Bering Sea. Biological samples were collected at 250, 500, and 1000 m depths with an open pelagic rope trawl lined with 1.2-cm mesh in the codend. Net type, mesh size, and trawling techniques were designed to parallel those of extensive Russian research surveys in the western Bering Sea, permitting direct comparisons between study results. Forty-three species of fish and 15 species of cephalopods were identified, including a new species of gonatid squid and a range extension for Paraliparis paucidens, a snailfish never before observed in Alaskan waters. Faunal biomass was high with over 25,000 (1400 kg) fish and squid collected in only 13 trawls. Concentrations of fish in this area surpass published records from the western Bering Sea and North Pacific Ocean by an order of magnitude, driven primarily by Leuroglossus schmidti, a deep-sea smelt. Generally, specimens were of high quality, and new size records were established for several species of fish and squid. The physical environment as determined from altimetry, satellite-tracked drifters, and water properties (temperature and salinity) was typical of the last decade for this area. Spatial patterns in species distribution were observed, but further research is needed to determine whether these are a factor of mesoscale variability or of habitat characteristics.  相似文献

The development of stratigraphic sequences has been demonstrated to be controlled by a set of factors including variations in subsidence, sediment input, eustatic sea level and physiography. Well and seismic data from the Jeanne d'Arc Basin, Grand Banks indicate that mid-Cretaceous tectonism controls at least three of these factors, namely subsidence, sediment input and physiography. North Atlantic rift tectonism was therefore the dominant factor in controlling the migration of coastal to shallow marine environments and the development of sequence stratigraphy in this basin during the mid-Cretaceous. The Avalon Formation respresents a mainly Barremian to Early Aptian regressive phase of clastic, marine to marginal marine sedimentation. This followed the deposition of a thick sequence of mainly marine limestones and shales of the Whiterose Formation above a mid-Valanginian sequence-bounding unconformity. The increased clastic input and northward progradation of coastal environments represented by the Avalon Formation occurred during uplift of a basement arch to the south with subsidence of the basin increasing to the north, accompanied by only relatively minor faulting. These features indicate that a period of epeirogenesis was initiated during the Barremian. Continuing uplift over an expanding area at the southern end of the basin is interpreted to have resulted in the development of an angular unconformity with incised valleys. This mid-Aptian unconformity defines the top of the Whiterose/Avalon sequence. Initiation of brittle fracturing of the sedimentary package and underlying basement (i.e. rifting) in mid-Aptian times resulted in rapid fault-controlled subsidence and fragmentation of the Jeanne d'Arc Basin. This great increase in subsidence rate caused retrogradation of coastal environments across the previously developed sequence-bounding unconformity, despite continuing high rates of sediment input from the uplifted basin margins. The transgressive, siliciclastic Ben Nevis Formation comprises two separate but related facies associations. A locally preserved basal association represents interfingering back-barrier environments and is herein defined as the Gambo Member. An upper, ubiquitous facies association comprises tidal-inlet channel, shoreface and lower shoreface/offshore transition sandstones. This upper facies association onlapped marine ravinement diastems above the laterally equivalent back-barrier facies. The rapid fault-controlled subsidence and high sediment input rate of this mid-Aptian to late Albian rift period resulted in the accumulation and preservation of very thick shoreface sandstones. The transgressive sandstones were buried by laterally equivalent offshore shales of the Nautilus Formation. Flooding of the basin margins induced by the onset of thermal subsidence in latest Albian or early Cenomanian times marks the top of the Ben Nevis/Nautilus syn-rift sequence.  相似文献

Apatite (U–Th)/He and fission track thermochronometry have been combined with 3D thermal modelling to constrain the late- to post-orogenic exhumation history of the Central Pyrenees, Spain. Data from four massifs immediately north and south of the present drainage divide of the mountain belt reveal a diachroneity in the transition from syn- to post-orogenic forcing of exhumation. Immediately south of the drainage divide, rapid exhumation of ∼1.5 mm year−1 decelerated after ∼30 Ma to ∼0.03 mm year−1. A similar transition occurred immediately north of the drainage divide at the same time. Further south, in the core of the Axial Zone antiformal stack of the Pyrenees, rapid (∼1 mm year−1), syn-orogenic exhumation continued to ∼20 Ma, but slowed to ∼0.1–0.2 mm year−1 soon after that time. This order of magnitude decrease in exhumation rates across the orogen records the diachronous transition into a post-orogenic state for the mountain belt. These data do not record rejuvenation of exhumation in Late Miocene or Pliocene times driven either by large-scale base-level change or an evolution to more erosive climatic conditions.  相似文献
