Q- and R-mode factor analytical studies were made of 158 stream sediment samples from the Mount Nansen area, Yukon Territory, analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo, Ni, Ag, and Sb. R-mode results were more clear-cut than were Q-mode in terms of ease of interpreting geological significance of individual factors, although results of both methods were very comparable. The 3-factor R-mode model accounted for 79.9 percent of the variation in the data. Factor 1, a Pb-Zn-(Ag) factor correlated with Mount Nansen volcanic rocks and particularly with known Pb-Zn-Ag-Au veins within those rocks. Factor 2, a Cu-Mo factor correlated with porphyric intrusions known to contain Cu-Mo mineralized zones. Factor 3, an Sb-(Ag) factor is, as yet, not adequately explained in terms of geology. The main additional contribution of the Q-mode study is the communalities. Samples that depart from the norm (i.e. do not agree well with the 3-factor model) are readily apparent because of low communalities and must be considered anomalous in the general sense until an adequate explanation for this difference is found.  相似文献

Selection of threshold values in geochemical data using probability graphs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A method of choosing threshold values between anomalous and background geochemical data, based on partitioning a cumulative probability plot of the data is described. The procedure is somewhat arbitrary but provides a fundamental grouping of data values. Several practical examples of real data sets that range in complexity from a single population to four populations are discussed in detail to illustrate the procedure.The method is not restricted to the choice of thresholds between anomalous and background populations but is much more general in nature. It can be applied to any polymodal distribution containing adequate values and populations with appropriate density distribution. As a rule such distributions for geochemical data closely approach a lognormal model. Two examples of the more general application of the method are described.  相似文献

Multiple episodes of extensional tectonism dominated the formation of Mesozoic fault-bounded basins on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, the Irish Continental Shelf and the central North Sea. A range of structural and stratigraphic responses in the Jeanne d'Arc, Porcupine and Moray Firth basins support widespread synchronous tectonic controls on sedimentation during one of these episodes, the Late Cimmerian. Rifting was preceded by a phase of related tectonism during which subsidence rates began to vary across broad areas but without significant fault block rotation. This Late Cimmerian ‘onset warp’ pattern of subsidence is considered to have been essential in the establishment of restricted anoxic basins from latest Oxfordian through Kimmeridgian (sensu gallico) time and the development of one prolific layer of organic-rich source rocks. The most prominent and widely recognized structural/lithostratigraphic response to Late Cimmerian rifting was the deposition of sediment wedges. Tithonian to early Valanginian strata generally thicken- into northerly trending faults in the Jeanne d'Arc and Porcupine basins, indicating that extensional stress was orientated WNW-ESE across a very broad area. The misalignment of this regional Late Cimmerian extensional stress with local inherited structural fabric may be responsible for transpressional uplift of individual fault blocks in the Outer Moray Firth basin. Sedimentological responses to Late Cimmerian rifting were varied, though a common lithofacies stacking pattern is recognized. Variably thick conglomerates and/or sandstones were widely deposited at the start of rift deformation, while palaeoenvironments ranged from alluvial and braid plain to submarine fan even within individual basins. The relatively coarse basal sediments fine upwards into a second layer of commonly organic-rich shales and mark The widest variations in palaeoenvironments and sediment thicknesses occurred during the last phase of Late Cimmerian rift tectonism, though all three basins show evidence of decreasing water depths, increasing oxygen levels and increasing grain size. This lithofacies stacking pattern of relatively coarse to fine to coarse (reservoir/source/reservoir) and the development of bounding unconformities are largely attributable to progressive changes in rift-controlled subsidence. Rift basin subsidence rates are interpreted to increase from a low at initiation of faulting to a mid-rift peak, followed by slowing subsidence to the end of extension. A number of counteracting crustal mechanisms that may account for progressive variations in rift-induced subsidence are considered.  相似文献

Depth profiles of solute chemistry and sulfate isotopic compositions are presented for groundwater and pore water in a sequence of Quaternary glacial outwash sediments. Sand units show evidence for hydraulic connection to the surface and thus modern sources of solutes. Finer‐grained sediments show a general pattern of increasing solute concentrations with depth, with sulfate derived from ancient rainwater and pyrite oxidation in the soil/drift. In these sediments sulfate has undergone bacterial sulfate reduction (BSR) to produce biogenic sulfide. In clay sediments, with d10 ≤ 1·6 µm, high concentrations of sulfate and acetate now co‐exist, implying that BSR is inhibited. The correlation with smaller sediment grain size indicates that this is due to pore size exclusion of the sulfate reducing bacteria. Mechanical restriction of microbial function thus provides a fundamental limitation on microbial respiration in buried clay‐rich sediments, which acts as a control on the chemical evolution of their pore waters. Alpine‐type mountain belts formed by continental collision are characterised by a strong cross‐sectional asymmetry driven by the dominant underthrusting of one plate beneath the other. Such mountain belts are flanked on either side by two peripheral foreland basins, one over the underthrust plate and one over the over‐riding plate; these have been termed pro‐ and retro‐foreland basins, respectively. Numerical modelling that incorporates suitable tectonic boundary conditions, and models orogenesis from growth to a steady‐state form (i.e. where accretionary influx equals erosional outflux), predicts contrasting basin development to these two end‐member basin types. Pro‐foreland basins are characterised by: (1) Accelerating tectonic subsidence driven primarily by the translation of the basin fill towards the mountain belt at the convergence rate. (2) Stratigraphic onlap onto the cratonic margin at a rate at least equal to the plate convergence rate. (3) A basin infill that records the most recent development of the mountain belt with a preserved interval determined by the width of the basin divided by the convergence rate. In contrast, retro‐foreland basins are relatively stable, are not translated into the mountain belt once steady‐state is achieved, and are consequently characterised by: (1) A constant tectonic subsidence rate during growth of the thrust wedge, with zero tectonic subsidence during the steady‐state phase (i.e. ongoing accretion‐erosion, but constant load). (2) Relatively little stratigraphic onlap driven only by the growth of the retro‐wedge. (3) A basin fill that records the entire growth phase of the mountain belt, but only a condensed representation of steady‐state conditions. Examples of pro‐foreland basins include the Appalachian foredeep, the west Taiwan foreland basin, the North Alpine Foreland Basin and the Ebro Basin (southern Pyrenees). Examples of retro‐foreland basins include the South Westland Basin (Southern Alps, New Zealand), the Aquitaine Basin (northern Pyrenees), and the Po Basin (southern European Alps). We discuss how this new insight into the variability of collisional foreland basins can be used to better interpret mountain belt evolution and the hydrocarbon potential of these basins types.  相似文献

An Australia Telescope survey for CMB anisotropies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We have surveyed six distinct 'empty fields' using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) in an ultracompact configuration with the aim of imaging, with a high brightness sensitivity, any arcminute-scale brightness-temperature anisotropies in the background radio sky. The six well-separated regions were observed at a frequency of 8.7 GHz, and the survey regions were limited by the ATCA primary beams which have a full width at half-maximum of 6 arcmin at this frequency; all fields were observed with a resolution of 2 arcmin and an rms thermal noise of 24 μJy beam−1. After subtracting foreground confusion detected in higher resolution images of the fields, residual fluctuations in Stokes I images are consistent with the expectations from thermal noise and weaker (unidentified) foreground sources; the Stokes Q and U images are consistent with expectations from thermal noise.
Within the sensitivity of our observations, we have no reason to believe that there are any Sunyaev–Zeldovich holes in the microwave sky surveyed. Assuming Gaussian-form CMB anisotropy with a 'flat' spectrum, we derive 95 per cent confidence upper limits of Q flat<10–11 μK in polarized intensity and Q flat<25 μK in total intensity. The ATCA filter function peaks at l =4700 and has half-maximum values at l =3350 and 6050.  相似文献

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory has developed a set of computer programs known as the Solar System Data Processing System (SSDPS) which is employed in improving the ephemerides of the major planets and for improving the values of several associated astronomical constants. A group of solutions for the masses of the major planets, together with the AU and radii of Mercury, Venus, and Mars, is presented. These solutions based upon optical, radar, and spacecraft radio tracking data are preliminary. The relative power of radar and radio tracking data vis-à-vis purely optical data in a solution is shown. Deep-sea coral has proved useful for paleoceanographic reconstructions and for documenting 14C-ages of water masses using 230Th-ages. However, for precise and accurate U-series dating, further information on coral-age structure, growth rate and diagenetic evolution is still needed. To document such processes, we used U-Th-226Ra systematics in a 40 cm diameter, Lophelia pertusa specimen collected in 1912 from the Eastern Atlantic (Sea of the Hebrides). External parts of the specimen are thought to have been alive when collected whereas more internal parts were likely dead. The “live-collected” and “dead” parts of the skeleton were sampled and analyzed for their 230Th, 232Th, 234U, 238U, 226Ra and Ba contents by thermal ionization and multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. 230Th/234U ratios in the most recent parts yielded ages of 86 ± 6 a and 92 ± 9 a, in agreement with the date of recovery. The older parts yielded 230Th ages ranging from 169 ± 15 to 211 ± 10 a (n = 5), but had a 31% higher U content than more recent parts of the skeleton. This raises concerns about the possibility of secondary diagenetic U uptake, although an environmentally controlled U/Ca shift between coral growth stages cannot be ruled out. 226Ra/Ba measurements were made, and model- 226Ra/Ba ages averaging 250 ± 12 yr were calculated for the older part, assuming a constant initial 226Ra/Ba ratio in bottom waters. These ages are slightly older than 230Th-ages, suggesting either that 226Ra/Ba ratios of ambient-seawater changed over time or that a diagenetic phenomenon have affected the U-series system, or both. Scanning electron microscope observations revealed bioerosion and secondary biomineralization in the older part of the coral skeleton, supporting the hypothesis that diagenetic processes may have influenced the ages obtained by the U-series toolbox. Modeled U-series ages for such an open system are discussed. However, a comparison between 14C- and 230Th-ages performed on both pristine and bioeroded parts of the coral gives coherent values (ca 450 a) for the preindustrial 14C-reservoir age of North Atlantic waters. It remains to be determined, however, whether diagenesis occurs rapidly over a short period of time, or whether it continues for longer periods. In the latter case, diagenetic processes would hamper paleoceanographic interpretations as well as the precise calculation of 14C ages of deep-water masses, based on comparative U/Th- and 14C-chronologies.  相似文献
