Peatlands are important carbon stores, but when drained (e.g. for agriculture), this carbon is released to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide (CO2, a greenhouse gas). Globally, at least 15% of peatlands have been drained, mostly in Europe and South‐east Asia, and are responsible for 5% of human‐derived CO2 emissions. Peatlands have been exploited for generations, but not without local to global consequences, particularly in South‐East Asia. However, recognition of the continuous environmental toll caused by peatland exploitation is leading to a need to change attitudes and practices, in order to propel a move towards a more balanced and responsible use of peat in both northern and tropical peatlands.  相似文献

We have measured the chemical composition of cosmic rays withZ2 over an energy range from 100 MeV/nuc to >2 GeV/nuc using 2 new large area counter telescopes. One of these instruments was a 4 element dE/dx×E× Range telescope, the other a 4 element dE/dx×Cerenkov× ×Range telescope. Two balloon flights with these telescopes at Ft. Churchill in the summer of 1970 provided a total of nearly 1000 Fe nuclei with a charge resolution ranging from 0.10 charge unit at Carbon to 0.25 charge unit at Fe. A detailed charge spectrum is obtained at both high and low energies. Some important differences exist between the present results and those obtained earlier, due in part to the improved statistical accuracy and in part to the improved background rejection of the present data. In particular, the abundance of Cr and Mn are each found to be 0.10×Fe in contrast to the earlier ratio of 0.30 found by some workers for each of these nuclei. The abundance of these two nuclei, as well as others in the 15–25 range, shows no strong dependence on energy. We have extrapolated our composition data to the cosmic ray sources using a variety of interstellar path length distributions. The abundances ofall secondary nuclei withZ between 3–25 are consistent only with propagation models which have vacuum path length distributions which do not differ greatly from exponential. The source abundances of nuclei withZ=15, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24, and 25 are found to be <0.02×Fe. For the remaining nuclei, Na, Al, S, and Ca are found to have source abundances of 0.07, 0.11, 0.18 and 0.13 of Fe respectively. The source abundance of C and O relative to Fe is also much different than some earlier compilations. A comparison of solar and cosmic ray abundances reveals certain selective differences, rather than a systematic overabundance of heavy nuclei in cosmic rays, as has been suggested in the past. We report on new measurements of the spectra of Li, Be and B nuclei in the primary cosmic radiation in the energy range 100 MeV/nuc to >22 BeV/nuc. The differential spectrum of these light nuclei is found to have a maximum at 400 MeV/nuc in 1966. The L/M ratio is found to be equal to 0.25±0.01, constant over the entire energy range of the measurement. Atmospheric and solar modulation effects on the L nuclei and the L/M ratio are discussed. It is concluded that this ratio is representative of conditions in interstellar space. Using the most recently available fragmentation parameters gives a material path length of 3.6 g/cm2 of hydrogen for the particles producing the L nuclei. The absence of any variation of the L/M ratio with energy places severe constraints on models for the propagation of cosmic rays. Models in which the material path length is a strong function of energy — or that exhibit an exponential path-length distribution for a fixed energy are incompatible with these results. An examination of the abundance ratios of the individual L nuclei separately reveals major discrepancies with the predictions of interstellar diffusion theory based on presently accepted fragmentation parameters. The constancy of the measured Li/M and B/M ratios with energy is not in accord with the large energy dependence of these ratios expected from the energy dependence of the fragmentation cross-sections. The low Li/M ratio and high B/M ratio to be expected if these nuclei are created at a much lower energy than we observe are also not found. This presents difficulties for theories which suggest that the passage through matter has occurred at low energies subsequently followed by considerable acceleration.The Be/M ratio in cosmic rays is anomalous in that it is 40% larger than expected on the basis of the fragmentation cross-sections. Evidence presented here on the isotopic composition of Be nuclei suggests that this discrepancy is due to an enhanced abundance of Be9 or Be10 in cosmic rays. This discrepancy complicates the determination of a cosmic-ray age using the decay of Be10 into B.Nevertheless the Be/B ratio is observed to remain constant at 0.42±0.03 over the energy range from 100 MeV/nuc to over 10 BeV/nuc. Unless the fragmentation parameters into the various isotopes of Be and B are such that e.g. (Be/B)<0.05 as a result of this decay, then the age of cosmic rays is either >3×108 years or <106 years. The further observation that the mass to charge ratio of all Be nuclei of energy 1 BeV/nuc is =2.05±0.1 suggests that Be10 is present at these energies. The flow structure on a gentle slope at Vallon dOl in the northern suburbs of Marseille in southern France has been documented by means of surface wind and temperature measurements collected from 7 June to 14 July 2001 during the ESCOMPTE experiment. The analysis of the time series reveals temperature and wind speed oscillations during several nights (about 60--90 min oscillation period) and several days (about 120–180 min oscillation period) during the whole observing period. Oscillating katabatic winds have been reported in the literature from theoretical, experimental and numerical studies. In the present study, the dynamics of the observed oscillating katabatic winds are in good agreement with the theory.In contrast to katabatic winds, no daytime observations of oscillating anabatic upslope flows have ever been published to our knowledge, probably because of temperature inversion break-up that inhibits upslope winds. The present paper shows that cold air advection by a sea breeze generates a mesoscale horizontal temperature gradient, and hence baroclinicity in the atmosphere, which then allows low-frequency oscillations, similar to a katabatic flow. An expression for the oscillation period is derived that accounts for the contribution of the sea-breeze induced mesoscale horizontal temperature gradient. The theoretical prediction of the oscillation period is compared to the measurements, and good agreement is found. The statistical analysis of the wind flow at Vallon dOl shows a dominant north-easterly to easterly flow pattern for nighttime oscillations and a dominant south-westerly flow pattern for daytime oscillations. These results are consistent with published numerical simulation results that show that the air drains off the mountain along the maximum slope direction, which in the studied case is oriented south-west to north-east.  相似文献

New measurements of the intensity and spectrum of cosmic ray nitrogen nuclei made by instruments flown on balloons and on the Pioneer-8 space probe are reported. The nitrogen spectrum is found to be identical with that of the other medium nuclei, carbon and oxygen, over the range of measurement from 100 MeV/nuc to > 22 GeV/nuc. The ratio of N to all M nuclei is found to be =0.125, constant to within 10% over this energy range. This ratio is extrapolated to the cosmic-ray source using the most recently obtained abundances of oxygen and heavier nuclei and fragmentation parameters for the production of nitrogen from these nuclei. Taking an average material path length of 4 g/cm2 of hydrogen constant with energy, as required to make the abundance of L nuclei 0 at the cosmic-ray source, the resulting N/M source ratio is 0.03. In other words, to the same degree that the so-called L nuclei are absent in the cosmic-ray sources, N nuclei are also absent. This nitrogen abundance is therefore different from the estimated solar atmospheric abundance of 0.10 for the N/M ratio which is believed to represent the integrated effects of nucleo-synthesis in the galaxy at the time of the formation of the sun. Nevertheless under certain conditions in the CNO bi-cycle that operates for the production of nitrogen in stellar objects a negligible production of nitrogen might be expected. It is suggested that these conditions exist in the cosmic-ray sources. The C/O ratio of 0.9 deduced for cosmic-ray sources is compatible with the observed low nitrogen abundance arising in this CNO bi-cycle.NRC-NASA Resident Research Associate at Goddard Space Flight Center.  相似文献

Abstract

This study examines how migrant households relocate their homes in two Cameroonian cities over the course of lifetimes or even generations. The central claim is that homeownership is the ultimate sign of integration into city life. Using qualitative and quantitative research methods (218 interviews, 30 focus groups and a household survey, sample size 686), the study argues that three key factors explain why people move: the quality of housing they can affords, the proximity to a workplace and the potential for homeownership. Three residential model trajectories are identified. The first describes a journey from being a new migrant who is a guest of family or friends in the city centre to being a married family with kids owning a home in the urban periphery. The second model continues that journey by returning back to the city centre in pursuit of more convenient, high-status home location (if finances permit). A third model describes moves to sites all over the city later in life as older individuals seek to maximize family income in the way they use multiple properties. Understanding residential mobility patterns has the potential to lead to a better public policies and more effective private investments in the housing sector.  相似文献

Currumbin Creek on the Australian Gold Coast is a wave-dominated tidal inlet which exhibits a particularly active morphology. The recent history of Currumbin Creek entrance has seen rapid growth of the entrance for access to the ocean by fishermen, as a world class surfing site, and as a recreational area. Before the construction of two groynes in the 70's, Currumbin Creek entrance was highly variable in terms of inlet location and sand bar characteristics due to a cyclical behaviour of spit migration. Nowadays, the entrance is stabilised. However, natural processes continue with the entrance infilling causing flood and navigation issues, resulting in a regular dredging program to maintain an open entrance and for regular beach nourishment plans.  相似文献

Abstract Lytechinus variegatus and Arbacia punctulata have been studied primarily in inshore, shallow‐water areas. However, they are abundant in deeper waters on the Florida gulf‐coast shelf and seem important components of the benthic communities there. Lytechinus variegatus occurs alone on sand bottoms and A. punctulata occurs alone on rubble bottoms in these deeper waters. The species also co‐occur there on ­heterogeneous bottoms, each in a distinct microhabitat with A. punctulata on rubble and L. variegatus on surrounding sand. Characteristics of the sea urchins in these different deeper‐water habitat types and at one nearshore site with a heterogeneous rubble‐sand bottom were compared. Over the 2‐year study, offshore individuals of both species had low gut and gonad indices and the maximum size of individuals did not change. This suggests food limitation and low production. Offshore, A. punctulata had a higher Aristotle's lantern index and lower gut and gonad indices in populations where it ­co‐occurred with L. variegatus compared to populations where it occurred alone. The ­Aristotle's lantern index of L. variegatus did not differ among the offshore sites. Neither species seemed food limited at the nearshore site. Although productivity is lower at the offshore sites, both species extend their distribution and reproduction potential by existing there.  相似文献

We report silicon isotopic determinations for USGS rock reference materials BHVO-1 and BHVO-2 using a Nu Plasma multi-collector (MC)-ICP-MS, upgraded with a new adjustable entrance slit, to obtain medium resolution, as well as a stronger primary pump and newly designed sampler and skimmer cones ("B" cones). These settings, combined with the use of collector slits, allowed a resolution to be reached that was sufficient to overcome the 14N16O and 14N2 interferences overlying the 30Si and the 28Si peaks, respectively, in an earlier set-up. This enabled accurate measurement of both δ30Si and δ29Si. The δ value is expressed in per mil variation relative to the NBS 28 quartz reference material. Based on data acquired from numerous sessions spread over a period of six months, we propose a recommended average δ30Si of −0.33 ± 0.05‰ and −0.29 ± 0.11‰ (2se) for BHVO-1 and BHVO-2, respectively. Our BHVO grand mean silicon isotope composition (δ30Si =−0.31 ± 0.06‰) is significantly more negative than the only published value for BHVO-2, but is in very good agreement with the recently established average value of ocean island basalts (OIB), confirming the conclusion that the OIB reservoir has a distinct isotopic composition from the solar reservoir as sampled by chondrites.  相似文献
