Annual and seasonal displacements of ploughing boulders were investigated at Finse, southern Norway, by traditional surveying and differential carrier-phase global positioning system measurements. Annual displacement rates were mainly below 10 mm/year, although one particular season showed rates of 26 mm/year on average. There was a tendency for larger boulders to travel faster. Seasonal displacements were restricted to the annual freeze-thaw cycle. The frost heave seems to have a significant horizontal component, which does not necessarily point in the downslope direction. Thus, the concept of frost creep is not applicable to the investigated ploughing boulders. On the other hand, due to tilting of the boulders, a momentum may be gained during thaw consolidation that could induce downslope displacements. The Nama Group of southern Namibia is a candidate for the Terminal Proterozoic Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP). Desirable characteristics of a GSSP include a well-preserved index-fossil assemblage, little deformation or metamorphism. well-constrained isotopic ages, stable-isotope records and magnetostratigraphic control. The age of the Nama Group sediments is now constrained to between 570 and 510 Ma. Assuming the Gondwana assembly was nearly complete at this same time, there is a discrepancy between the previously published Nama poles, a revised 550-510 Ma apparent polar wander path for Gondwana and the preceding supercontinental assemblages of Rodinia and Panottia. For these reasons, the Nama Group sediments were resampled in an effort to evaluate the potential of detailing the magnetostratigraphy of the Nama Group and resolving the discrepancy between the Nama poles and the APWP of Gondwana. Collectively, both the previous studies of the Nama Group and this one show a complex series of overprints and no easily discernible primary direction of magnetization. We therefore urge caution in using the Nama Group poles in any tectonic models of the Neoproterozoic-Early Palaeozoic. Specifically, the N1 component of magnetization, previously identified as a primary magnetization, was discovered in a younger suite of samples. Therefore, previous tectonic models that used the N1 magnetization direction as representative of the time of Nama deposition should be revised in light of these recent findings. 相似文献

Polymer injection is a widespread strategy in enhanced oil recovery. Polymer increases the water viscosity and creates a more favorable mobility ratio between the injected water and the displaced oil. The computational cost of simulating polymer injection can be significantly reduced if one splits the governing system of two-phase equations into a pressure equation and a set of saturation/component equations and use a Gauss–Seidel algorithm with optimal cell ordering to solve the nonlinear systems arising from an implicit discretization of the saturation/component equations. This approach relies on a robust single-cell solver that computes the saturation and polymer concentration of a cell, given the total flux and the saturation and polymer concentration of the neighboring cells. In this paper, we consider a relatively comprehensive polymer model used in an industry-standard simulator, and show that, in the case of a discretization using a two-point flux approximation, the single-cell problem always admits a solution that is also unique. 相似文献

Modeling geological carbon storage represents a new and substantial challenge for the subsurface geosciences. To increase understanding and make good engineering decisions, containment processes and large-scale storage operations must be simulated in a thousand-year perspective. Large differences in spatial and temporal scales make it prohibitively expensive to compute the fate of injected CO2 using traditional 3D simulators. Instead, accurate forecast can be computed using simplified models that are adapted to the specific setting of the bouyancy-driven migration of the light fluid phase. This paper presents a family of vertically integrated models for studying the combined large-scale and long-term effects of structural, residual, and solubility trapping of CO2. The models are based on an assumption of a sharp interface separating CO2 and brine and can provide a detailed inventory of the injected CO2 volumes over periods of thousands of years within reasonable computational time. To be compatible with simulation tools used in industry, the models are formulated in a black-oil framework. The models are implemented in MRST-co2lab, which is an open community software developed especially to study and optimize large-scale, long-term geological storage of CO2. The Bøverbru and Lunner dyke ages are statistically concordant. However, the palaeomagnetic signature of the Bøverbru dyke is complex, and directions from the margins and the interior of the dyke differ in polarity. Therefore, the new Early Triassic palaeomagnetic pole for Baltica (Eurasia) is exclusively based on the less complex Lunner dykes and contacts (palaeomagnetic pole: latitude=52.9°N, longitude=164.4°E, dp / dm =4.5 ° /7.3°). The early Triassic palaeomagnetic pole [mean age: 243±5 Ma (2 σ )] is slightly different from the Upper Carboniferous–Permian (294–274 Ma) and Kiaman-aged poles from the Oslo Rift. 相似文献

Turbidites of the Upper Cretaceous Chugach terrane of southern Alaska were deposited in a trench during northward-directed subduction. The fault-bounded outcrop belt of the Chugach terrane is about 2000-km long and 100-km wide and was accreted to Alaska during the Cenozoic. Turbidites are at least 5000 m thick, are extensively deformed, have been regionally metamorphosed, and have been intruded by anatectic granites. Facies associations indicate an east-to-west progression from inner-fan to middle-fan, outer-fan, fan-fringe, and basin-plain deposits. The Eocene Butano Sandstone was deposited as a submarine fan in a relatively small, partly restricted basin in a borderland setting. It is possibly as thick as 3000 m and was derived from erosion of nearly Mesozoic granitic and older metamorphic rocks located to the south. Deposition was at lower bathyal to abyssal water depths. The original fan may have been 120-to 160-km long and 80-km wide. Outcrops of submarine-canyon, innerfan, middle-fan, and outer-fan facies associations indicate that the depositional model of Mutti and Ricci Lucchi can be used to describe the Butano Sandstone. 相似文献

Generalized extreme value shape parameter and its nature for extreme precipitation using long time series and the Bayesian approach 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Assessing the probability of extreme precipitation events is consequential in civil planning. This requires an understanding of how return values change with return periods, which is essentially described by the generalized extreme value (GEV) shape parameter. Some works in the field suggest a constant shape parameter, while our analysis indicates a non-universal value. We re-analysed an older precipitation dataset (169 stations) extended by Norwegian data (71 stations). We showed that while each set seems to have a constant shape parameter, it differs between the two datasets, indicating regional differences. For a more comprehensive analysis of spatial effects, we examined a global dataset (1495 stations). We provided shape parameter maps for two models and found clear evidence that the shape parameter depends on elevation, while the effect of latitude remains uncertain. Our results confirm an explanation in terms of dominating precipitation systems based on a proxy derived from the Köppen-Geiger climate classification.
