Our study employed large-eddy simulation (LES) based on a one-equation subgrid-scale model to investigate the flow field and pollutant dispersion characteristics inside urban street canyons. Unstable thermal stratification was produced by heating the ground of the street canyon. Using the Boussinesq approximation, thermal buoyancy forces were taken into account in both the Navier–Stokes equations and the transport equation for subgrid-scale turbulent kinetic energy (TKE). The LESs were validated against experimental data obtained in wind-tunnel studies before the model was applied to study the detailed turbulence, temperature, and pollutant dispersion characteristics in the street canyon of aspect ratio 1. The effects of different Richardson numbers (Ri) were investigated. The ground heating significantly enhanced mean flow, turbulence, and pollutant flux inside the street canyon, but weakened the shear at the roof level. The mean flow was observed to be no longer isolated from the free stream and fresh air could be entrained into the street canyon at the roof-level leeward corner. Weighed against higher temperature, the ground heating facilitated pollutant removal from the street canyon.  相似文献

Regional climates are a major factor in determining the distribution of many species. Anthropogenic inputs of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere have been predicted to cause rapid climatic changes in the next 50–100 years. Species such as the Gila trout (Oncorhynchus gilae) that have small ranges, limited dispersal capabilities, and narrow physiological tolerances will become increasingly susceptible to extinction as their climate envelope changes. This study uses a regional climate change simulation (Leung et al., Clim Change 62:75–113, 2004) to determine changes in the climate envelope for Gila trout, which is sensitive to maximum temperature, associated with a plausible scenario for greenhouse gas increases. These regional climate changes are downscaled to derive surface temperature lapse rates using regression models. This procedure indicates that suitable, warm season habitat for Gila trout will be reduced by 70% by decreasing the size of their climate envelope. Warmer temperatures coupled with a decrease in summer precipitation would also tend to increase the intensity and frequency of forest fires that are a major threat to their survival. The climate envelope approach utilized here could be used to assess climate change threats to other rare species with limited ranges and dispersal capabilities.  相似文献

香港天文台近年的研究显示,香港的气温上升是由温室效应增强所导致的全球变暖及本地高密度城市发展的共同影响.除温度外,香港因受城市化影响,相对湿度在城市与郊区之间亦有很明显的差异.选取1989-2006年较能代表香港市区与郊区情况的气象站每小时气温和相对湿度数据,初步比较了香港市郊温度和相对湿度差异的日变化和季节变化,并试图分析这些差异变化与城市化影响的关系.结果显示郊区的气温变化幅度比市区大、变化也较突然,市区晚间至清晨气温较郊区为高;日间情况大致逆转,但气温差别幅度不及晚间.一年之中,城市化效应在冬季最为显著,春季则最不明显.市郊相对湿度的差异同样很明显.晚间至清晨市区相对湿度较郊区为低,日间相反.  相似文献

We address the inverse problem of source reconstruction for the difficult case of multiple sources when the number of sources is unknown a priori. The problem is solved using a Bayesian probabilistic inferential framework in which Bayesian probability theory is used to derive the posterior probability density function for the number of sources and for the parameters (e.g., location, emission rate, release time and duration) that characterize each source. A mapping (source–receptor relationship) that relates a multiple source distribution to the concentration measurements made by an array of detectors is formulated based on a forward-time Lagrangian stochastic model. A computationally efficient methodology for determination of the likelihood function for the problem, based on an adjoint representation of the source–receptor relationship and realized in terms of a backward-time Lagrangian stochastic model, is described. An efficient computational algorithm based on a parallel tempered Metropolis-coupled reversible-jump Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method is formulated and implemented to draw samples from the posterior probability density function of the source parameters. This methodology allows the MCMC method to initiate jumps between the hypothesis spaces corresponding to different numbers of sources in the source distribution and, thereby, allows a sample from the full joint posterior distribution of the number of sources and the parameters for each source to be obtained. The proposed methodology for source reconstruction is tested using synthetic concentration data generated for cases involving two and three unknown sources.  相似文献

The transportation of dangerous goods (DG) can significantly affect the human and natural environment if accidents occur during the transportation process. Hong Kong is a large city with high population density and narrow streets. Due to the land constraints, vehicles carrying DG inevitably have to pass through densely populated areas or their vicinities. Therefore, safe DG transportation is of paramount importance. There is thus an urgent need to review and improve the way trucks carrying DG are being routed on the road networks. Routing of such vehicles should consider not only the operating cost, but also the safety of travelers in the network, the population potentially exposed, and the possible damage inflicted to the surrounding properties and facilities in the event of a DG incident. This research develops a novel methodology for the determination of optimal routes for DG transportation under conflicting objectives by means of the compromise programming approach. With the support of geographical information system (GIS), a case study is carried out for the transportation of DG in the road network of Hong Kong. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach.  相似文献

This study investigates the urban heat island characteristics of four major areas of Hong Kong. The areas of study include a densely populated and well-developed commercial area (i.e., Tsim Sha Tsui) and three suburban areas (i.e., Cheung Chau, Lau Fau Shan and Sha Tin) with differing degrees of development. The weather station data of respective areas were acquired from the Hong Kong Observatory. The urban heat island intensity, determined as the air-temperature difference between the selected urban/suburban area and the reference rural area (i.e., Ta Kuw Ling) with thin population and lush vegetation, was used for the analysis. Results showed stronger heat island effect during winter and nighttime than during summer and daytime. An investigation of the cooling and heating degree days indicate that all areas have observed higher number of cooling degree days. However, the cooling degree days were the maximum while heating degree days were the minimum in the urban area (i.e., Tsim Sha Tsui). Clearly, the minimum heating degree days and the maximum cooling degree days in the urban area were a direct consequence of urban heat island. The 10-year (i.e., from 1995 to 2005) average shows that Cheung Chau experienced the least number of cooling degree days while Lau Fau Shan experienced the highest number of heating degree days. Seemingly, the area of Cheung Chau offers better thermal comfort conditions with the minimum number of cooling and heating degree days.  相似文献

A Lagrangian stochastic (LS) micromixing model is used for estimating concentration fluctuations in plumes of a passive, non-reactive tracer dispersing from elevated and ground-level compact sources into a neutral wall shear-layer flow. SPMMM (for sequential particle micromixing model) implements the familiar IECM (interaction by exchange with the conditional mean) micromixing scheme. The parametrization of the scalar micromixing time scale is identical to that proposed in a previously reported LS–IECM model (Cassiani et al., Atmos Environ 39:1457–1469, 2005a). However, while SPMMM is mathematically equivalent to the previously reported model, it differs in its numerical implementation: SPMMM releases N independent particles sequentially, whereas the previously reported model releases N independent particles simultaneously. In both implementations, the trajectories of the N particles are governed by single-point velocity statistics. The sequential particle implementation is computationally efficient, but cannot be applied to the case of reacting species. Results from both implementations are compared to experimental wind-tunnel dispersion data and to each other.  相似文献

The accurate representation of rainfall in models of global climate has been a challenging task for climate modelers owing to its small space and time scales. Quantifying this variability is important for comparing simulations of atmospheric behavior with real time observations. In this regard, this paper compares both the statistical and dynamically forced aspects of precipitation variability simulated by the high-resolution (36?km) Nested Regional Climate Model (NRCM), with satellite observations from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B42 dataset and simulations from the Community Atmosphere Model (CAM) at T85 spatial resolution. Six years of rainfall rate data (2000?C2005) from within the Tropics (30°S?C30°N) have been used in the analysis and results are presented in terms of long-term mean rain rates, amplitude and phase of the annual cycle and seasonal mean maps of precipitation. Our primary focus is on characterizing the annual cycle of rainfall over four land regions of the Tropics namely, the Indian Monsoon, the Amazon, Tropical Africa and the North American monsoon. The lower tropospheric circulation patterns are analyzed in both the observations and the models to identify possible causes for biases in the simulated precipitation. The 6-year mean precipitation simulated by both models show substantial biases throughout the global Tropics with NRCM/CAM systematically underestimating/overestimating rainfall almost everywhere. The seasonal march of rainfall across the equator, following the motion of the sun, is clearly seen in the harmonic vector maps. The timing of peak rainfall (phase) produced by NRCM is in closer agreement with the observations compared to CAM. However like the long-time mean, the magnitude of seasonal mean rainfall is greatly underestimated by NRCM throughout the Tropical land mass. Some of these regional biases can be attributed to erroneous circulation and moisture surpluses/deficits in the lower troposphere in both models. Overall, the results seem to indicate that employing a higher spatial resolution (36?km) does not significantly improve simulation of precipitation. We speculate that a combination of several physics parameterizations and lack of model tuning gives rise to the observed differences between NRCM and the observations.  相似文献

The temporal responses of peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), total polyphenols (TP), extractable condensed tannins (ECT) to different levels of lead (Pb) or manganese (Mn) stress, as well as the metal accumulation, in seedlings of Kandelia obovata were investigated. Both stress time and stress intensity had significant effects with significant accumulation of Pb and Mn in roots at Day 1. Pb and Mn showed no significant effects on root or leaf TP and ECT at Day 1. Prolonged exposure to metals caused significant drops of root TP and ECT but increased in leaves at Days 7 and 49. POD activities decreased in both roots and leaves at Day 1, while POD and SOD both increased under moderate levels of Pb and Mn at Day 7. The present study showed that antioxidative enzyme activities were more sensitive indicators to Pb or Mn stresses than phenolic compounds.  相似文献
