The depth distributions of the radiolarian fauna in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, marginal seas of the western Arctic Ocean, were examined quantitatively in depth-stratified plankton tows from 4 or 5 intervals above 500 m and in surface sediments from various depths between 163 and 2907 m. The radiolarian assemblage from the water column in September 2000 was dominated by Amphimelissa setosa and followed by the Actinomma boreale/leptoderma group, Pseudodictyophimus gracilipes and Spongotrochus glacialis. These species are related to the Arctic Surface Water shallower than 150 m. This assemblage is similar to that in the Greenland Sea relating to the ice edge, but did not contain typical Pacific radiolarians in spite of the flow of water of Pacific origin in this region. The living depth of Ceratocyrtis historicosa was restricted to the relatively warm water between 300 and 500 m corresponding to the upper Arctic Intermediate Water (AIW) originating from the Atlantic Ocean. Radiolarian assemblages in the surface sediments are similar to those in the plankton tows, except for common Cycladophora davisiana in sediment samples below 500 m. C. davisiana is probably a deep-water species adapted to the lower AIW or the Canadian Basin Deep Water ventilated from the shelves.  相似文献

This paper examines the spatial and temporal variability in the volumetric sediment balance of Allen Creek marsh, a macro-tidal salt marsh in the Bay of Fundy. The volumetric balance was determined as the balance of inputs of sediments and organic matter via accretion on the marsh surface and outputs of sedimentary material primarily due to erosion of the marsh margin. Changes in marsh surface elevation were measured at 20 buried plates and 3 modified sediment elevation tables from 1996–2002, and detailed margin surveys were conducted in 1997, 1999 and 2001 using a differential global positioning system. Changes in surface area were calculated using GIS overlay analysis and used in conjunction with accretion and erosion data to derive volumetric estimates of gains and losses of sedimentary material in the marsh system.Currently the volumetric sediment balance at Allen Creek marsh is positive. However the processes of erosion and accretion demonstrate seasonal, annual and spatial variability. Inputs to the system include deposition on the marsh surface from sediment laden waters and from ice rafting of sediments. Sediment is deposited onto the marsh surface year round, even during the winter when vegetation cover is sparse, and the amount of deposition in general is not significantly correlated with the frequency of tidal inundations. Based on the data from 1996 to 2002, the mid and high marsh zones experience mean accretion rates of approximately 1.4 cm year 1 whereas accretion rates in the low marsh region are statistically significantly lower (0.8 cm year 1). The absolute amount of accretion varies between seasons and from year to year. The main loss to the marsh is through erosion of the marsh margin cliffs which can remove a comparatively large volume of sedimentary material in one mass wasting event and which also decreases the vegetated surface area available for deposition from sediment laden waters. The volume of material removed from the marsh margin almost tripled between 1997 (169 m3) and 2001 (502 m3) following breaching of the side of a tidal creek channel, altering the patterns of margin erosion and deposition in the marsh system. During this time, however, other sheltered areas of the marsh system, such as along the tidal creek banks, showed evidence of new vegetation growth, increasing the amount of vegetated surface area available for deposition. The processes of erosion and deposition on the marsh surface exhibit considerable spatial variability, with different regions of the marsh being more or less sensitive to seasonal variability in the dominant controls influencing sediment deposition and erosion in this system, namely wave activity, vegetation, ice and water depths. A key factor in predicting how a marsh will evolve and respond to a number of different controls, e.g. sea-level rise or reduced sediment supply, is to quantify both accretion of the marsh surface and erosion of the marsh margin, evaluating the marsh system as a volumetric whole. This study demonstrates that a marsh system should be assessed in three dimensions rather than simply as a surface of accumulation. This is particularly important for open coastal marshes exposed to the erosive action of waves.  相似文献

In this study, the coccolith compositions of 213 surface sediment samples from the South Atlantic and Southern Ocean were analysed with respect to the environmental parameters of the overlying surface waters. From this data set, the abundance patterns of the main species and their ecological affinities were ascertained. In general, Emiliania huxleyi is the most abundant species of the recent coccolith assemblages in the study region. However, the lower photic zone taxa, composed of Florisphaera profunda and Gladiolithus flabellatus often dominate the assemblages between 20°N and 30°S. If E. huxleyi is excluded, Calcidiscus leptoporus and F. profunda become the most abundant species, each dominating discrete oceanographic regimes. While F. profunda is very abundant in the sediments underneath warmer, stratified surface waters with a deep nutricline, Calcidiscus leptoporus is encountered in high-productivity environments. Furthermore, the results of a canonical correspondence analysis reveal affinities of Gephyrocapsa spp., Helicosphaera spp. and Coccolithus pelagicus for intermediate to higher nutrient conditions in a well-mixed upper water column. In contrast, Gladiolithus flabellatus seems to be associated with high temperatures and salinities under low-nutrient conditions. Based on the relative abundances of Calcidiscus leptoporus, F. profunda, Gladiolithus flabellatus, Helicosphaera spp., Umbilicosphaera foliosa, Umbilicosphaera sibogae and a group of subordinate subtropical species, six surface sediment assemblages have been identified, which reflect the distribution and characteristics of the overlying surface waters. Their distribution appears to be mainly a function of the relative position of the nutricline and thermocline in the overlying photic zone.  相似文献

Quantitative geomorphologic analysis of shallowly buried, dendritic channel systems on the New Jersey shelf provides estimates of paleo-hydrologic parameters needed to link channel morphology to the former hydrodynamic setting. These channels, observed in 1–4 kHz deep-towed chirp seismic data, formed presumably as fluvial systems when the shelf was exposed during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The presumed fluvial origin of these channels is supported by their incision into underlying Pleistocene strata, a chaotic seismic fill unit at their bases which may be indicative of non-marine gravel lag, and measured stream junction angles that are consistent with a riverine origin. The channels would also have been subjected to estuarine/tidal environments during ensuing sea-level rise. We employ empirically derived hydraulic equations for modern rivers and estuaries to estimate paleo-discharges, velocities and maximum shear stresses, using the preserved and interpolated paleo-channel geometries as a guide. Generally, trunk/main channels have box-like, symmetric cross-sections, with width/depth ratios of >100, whereas smaller, tributary channels have more v-shaped, asymmetric cross-sections with width/depth ratios of ∼40–70. The high width/depth ratios, along with low sinuosities (∼1.1) and slopes (<0.02°), are consistent with braided streams as specified by a modern river classification system. However, the channels show no evidence of braiding. We hypothesize instead that these channel systems are immature, having had insufficient time to develop high sinuosities that would otherwise be expected before they were drowned by the Holocene transgression. Mean paleo-flow estimates for these systems assuming a tidal environment (1.0–1.5 m/s) are consistent with modern tidal creeks comparable to the sizes of channels observed here (<2 km wide and <25 m deep). Estimated tidal shear stresses would be sufficient to initiate sediment transport of grains 2–8 mm in diameter (coarse sand and fine gravel) as bedload and finer grained material in suspension. However, paleo-flow estimates assuming a fluvial environment (1.1–2.0 m/s) are generally too high for a non-tidal creek, given the presumed low hydraulic gradients in this coastal plain setting. Retrodicted fluvial discharge and boundary shear stresses would have been sufficient to transport particles up to ∼15 mm in diameter (gravel) as bedload; these grain sizes are too coarse to be transported by sluggish coastal plain rivers. We conclude that either flows were quite high when this system was first incised fluvially, perhaps due to meltwater pulses following the LGM, or that tidal influences have modified the original fluvial geometry.  相似文献

Rapid economic developments in East Asian countries have inevitably resulted in environmental degradation in the surrounding seas, and concern for both the environment and protection from pollutants is increasing. Identification of sources of contaminants is essential to environmental pollution management. In this study, the provenance of anthropogenic lead (Pb), a major pollutant of Yellow Sea sediments, was determined for river mouth sediments, including those of the Changjiang, Huanghe, Han, and Geum Rivers, and for age-determined shelf core sediments through the measurement of Pb isotope ratios in the HCl-leached fraction using multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (MC ICP/MS). Anthropogenic Pb has accumulated in shelf core sediments since 1910, and its isotope ratios were estimated as 0.863–0.866 and 2.119–2.125 for 207Pb/206Pb and 208Pb/206Pb, respectively, from the mixing relationships of the two endmembers. River mouth sediments exhibited enough distinction in anthropogenic Pb isotope ratios to be discriminated: 0.874 (2.144) in the Huanghe, 0.856 (2.129) in the Han, 0.857 (2.122) in the Geum, and 0.854 (2.101) in the Changjiang for 207Pb/206Pb (208Pb/206Pb), respectively. Although isotope ratios of geogenic Pb in sediments dating before 1910 showed narrow ranges (0.842–0.845 and 2.088–2.100 for 207Pb/206Pb and 208Pb/206Pb, respectively), distinct isotope ratios in each core permitted source identification of sediments in the Yellow Sea based on geographic locations and the geogenic Pb of each river. By comparing the isotope ratios of the estimated anthropogenic Pb to source-related materials, the provenances of anthropogenic Pb in Chinese river sediments were presumed to be Chinese coal or ore, which is also a major source of atmospheric particulate Pb. The anthropogenic Pb in the shelf core sediments in the northern Yellow Sea originated from northern Chinese cities such as Beijing and Tianjin through atmospheric pathways. Pb isotope ratios indicated that Pb in Korean river sediments was characteristic of local Korean ores.  相似文献

Published literature argues that the Limpopo Belt can be subdivided into three zones, each with a distinctive geological character and tectono-metamorphic fingerprint. There are currently two contrasting schools of thought regarding the tectono-metamorphic evolution of the CZ. One camp argues that geochronological, structural and prograde pressure–temperature (PT) evidence collectively indicate that the CZ underwent tectono-metamorphism at ca. 2.0 Ga which followed a clockwise PT evolution during a transpressive orogeny that was initiated by the collision of the Kaapvaal and Zimbabwe cratons. Deformation and metamorphism consistent with this scenario are observed in the southern part of the NMZ but are curiously absent from the whole of the SMZ. The opposing view argues that the peak metamorphism associated with the collision of the Kaapvaal and Zimbabwe cratons occurred at ca. 2.6 Ga and the later metamorphic event is an overprint associated with reactivation along Archean shear zones. Post-peak-metamorphic conditions, which at present cannot be convincingly related to either a ca. 2.6 or 2.0 Ga event in the CZ reveal contrasting retrograde paths implying either near-isothermal decompression and isobaric cooling associated with a ‘pop-up’ style of exhumation or steady decompression–cooling linked to exhumation controlled by erosion. Recent data argue that the prograde evolution of the ca. 2.0 Ga event is characterised by isobaric heating prior to decompression–cooling. Contrasting PT paths indicate that either different units exist within the CZ that underwent different PT evolutions or that some PT work is erroneous due to the application of equilibrium thermobarometry to mineral assemblages that are not in equilibrium. The morphology of the PT path(s) for the ca. 2.6–2.52 Ga event are also a matter of dispute. Some workers have postulated an anticlockwise PT evolution during this period whilst others regard this metamorphic event as following a clockwise evolution. Granitoid magmatism is broadly contemporaneous in all three zones at ca. 2.7–2.5 suggesting a possible causal geodynamic link. PT contrasts between and within the respective zones prevent, at present, the construction of a coherent and inter-related tectonic model that can account for all of the available evidence. Detailed and fully-integrated petrological and geochronological studies are required to produce reliable PTt paths that may resolve some of these pertinent issues.  相似文献

Geochemical and textural variations in frontal dune sediments along the western coast of Jutland, Denmark, have been investigated in order to identify possible sediment ‘provinces’ and transport pathways. An understanding of sediment sources and sinks is important for both for an understanding of the nature of sedimentary environments and for applied coastal engineering and management purposes. Four coastal sectors were identified on the basis of geochemical composition. One sector is compositionally different from the other three units, having higher concentrations of the trace elements Ni, Cr, V, Sc, Zn, Pb, Ba, Zr and many rare earth elements. Dune sediments on this section of coast also have higher Al2O3 to K2O ratios and lower Al2O3 to Fe2O3 ratios, reflecting a lower content of feldspar and higher content of heavy minerals. It is inferred that different, or additional, sediment source(s) have supplied sediment to this section of coast. Beach nourishment has contributed to the observed compositional differences, but previous data obtained from the Lodbjerg area indicate that aeolian sands on this section of coast naturally have a relatively high Si, Fe and Ti content, reflecting high quartz / feldspar ratio and relatively high content of heavy minerals, compared with those on other sections of the coast. Frontal dunes along the most northern section show high abundances of K2O, Rb and Ba, reflecting a relatively high K-feldspar content derived from local sources. Alongshore trends were also identified in the mean particle size and sorting of the frontal dunes, although there is no direct correspondence with the observed geochemical differences. Three coastal units can be identified on the basis of particle size. Frontal dune sediments in the middle section are relatively coarser and less well-sorted than those to the north and south, probably reflecting both the addition of beach nourishment material and greater exposure to strong westerly winds, which are a capable of transporting a wide range of particle sizes. The three units defined on this basis do not correlate directly with the units defined on the basis of geochemical composition.  相似文献

The evolution of the basement of southern Madagascar north and south of the Ranotsara shear zone was investigated using (U + Th)/Pb electron probe monazite age dating in combination with petrographic constraints. Several monazite grains show a stepwise progression of younger ages towards the rim indicating partial and complete resetting during tectonic, metamorphic and/or fluid events. The oldest ages, ranging from 630–2400 Ma, occur relatively rare in relic cores. A first, clear age-population is dated at 550–560 Ma. Most ages fall in two populations at 420–460 and 490–500 Ma, which in some samples overlap in error. We interprete these ages as dating low-pressure and high-temperature metamorphism. We have also clear evidence for Carboniferous (300–310 Ma) monazite overgrowth rims, which can not directly be related to macroscopic structures or metamorphic parageneses. In combination with literature data, we propose that the observed monazite age populations are related to Gondwana amalgamation and subsequent rifting events during the break up of Gondwana. Our study confirms that only the electron or ion microprobe yields sufficient spatial resolution to date individual shells of multiple zoned monazites in the polymetamorphic basement of Madagascar.  相似文献

The influence of carbonate and other buffering substances in soils on the results of a 3-step sequential extraction procedure (BCR) used for metal fractionation was investigated. Deviating from the original extraction scheme, where the extracts are analysed only for a limited number of metals, almost all elements in the soils were quantified by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, in the initial samples as well as in the residues of all extraction steps. Additionally, the mineral contents were determined by X-ray diffractometry. Using this methodology, it was possible to correlate changes in soil composition caused by the extraction procedure with the release of elements. Furthermore, the pH values of all extracts were monitored, and certain extraction steps were repeated until no significant pH-rise occurred. A soil with high dolomite content (27%) and a carbonate free soil were extracted. Applying the original BCR-sequence to the calcareous soil, carbonate was found in the residues of the first two steps and extract pH-values rose by around two units in the first and second step, caused mainly by carbonate dissolution. This led to wrong assignment of the carbonate elements Ca, Mg, Sr, Ba, and also to decreased desorption and increased re-adsorption of ions in those steps. After repetition of the acetic acid step until extract pH remained low, the carbonate was completely destroyed and the distributions of the elements Ca, Mg, Sr, Ba as well as those of Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb were found to be quite different to those determined in the original extraction. Furthermore, it could be shown that the effectiveness of the reduction process in step two was reduced by increasing pH: Fe oxides were not significantly attacked by the repeated acetic acid treatments, but a 10-fold amount of Fe was mobilized by hydroxylamine hydrochloride after complete carbonate destruction. On the other hand, only small amounts of Fe were released anyway. Even repeated reduction steps did not destroy the amorphous Fe oxides completely, showing that 0.1 mol L−1 hydroxylamine hydrochloride was not strong enough to attack these oxides effectively. The extraction sequences were carried out not only on the soil samples, but also on their coarse and fine fractions (> or <2 μm). The fine fraction of the calcareous soil contained only 10% dolomite, but was enriched in organic matter and clay minerals, which also resulted in increased extract pH-values during the sequential extraction. Hence, the effects on ion release in the fine fraction were similar to those of the whole soil. Since the destruction of the organic matter was incomplete after regular oxidation, the H2O2-treatment of the fine fraction had to be repeated. The addition of the extractable amounts of the two fractions showed good agreement to the results obtained for extraction of the whole soils. Likewise the pH-values of the carbonate-free soil extracts did not increase significantly, therefore it was concluded that repetitions of extraction steps for this soil were not necessary.Extract-pHs should always be controlled so that extraction conditions are comparable; to be able to use the BCR extraction scheme or similar ones for carbonate- and organic-rich samples this is mandatory. Single extraction steps should be repeated if pH rises too much; additionally the oxidizing step should be performed more than twice for samples rich in organic substances, depending upon the violence of the reaction with H2O2. If these precautions are neglected the validity of the extraction data is likely to be questionable.  相似文献

Geochemical maps expressing areal distributions of chemical elements in the earth’s land surface have been published in several countries in relation to various global environment issues. The authors have applied a radiogenic isotope ratio, 87Sr/86Sr, to geochemical mapping in order to understand the geological origin, transportation and dispersion system of chemical elements in the earth’s land surface. The Sr isotope ratio is a useful tracer for distinguishing the geological origin of surficial deposits, especially in areas where surface exposure of bedrocks is low, because it is not significantly altered by the processes of weathering and transportation. Most bedrocks in the Japanese islands are covered by plants, soils and urban areas. In this study, 142 of 1219 stream sediments (<180 μm) collected from the northeastern part of Aichi Prefecture, in the central part of Japan (75 km × 30 km), were analyzed. Their Sr isotope ratios range from 0.7086 to 0.7315 with an average of 0.7129, except for one sample. This average is higher than the mean of the upper crust of the Japan Arc (the Japanese Island Crustal Composite, JICC), 0.7077. This difference can be attributed to the below-average presence of young volcanic rocks, generally having lower 87Sr/86Sr values, and the above-average presence of granitic rocks, in the study area compared with the surface exposure of the Japan Arc. The first factor controlling the distribution of Sr isotope ratios is the bedrock distributed around the sampling points. Regional variation in the 87Sr/86Sr value shows that it is higher in the western and southeastern parts, where sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks are distributed, and that it is lower mainly in the central part, where granitic rocks are distributed. The 87Rb/86Sr–87Sr/86Sr plot for stream sediments more clearly reveals the differences and similarities of bedrocks. In some locations, the distribution of Sr isotope ratios does not correspond to that of bedrocks on the geological map. One reason is the existence of unmapped bedrock, for example, small intrusive masses of granite. The other is fluvial transportation and dispersion. The distribution of the isotope ratios suggests that some stream sediments include surficial deposits from a few km upstream. Application of the Sr isotope ratio to geochemical mapping is useful for revealing both the distribution of unexposed bedrocks and the transportation of surficial deposits. Information on unexposed bedrocks will be expected to contribute to the improvement of geological mapping.  相似文献
