In the internationally significant Victorian goldfields a complex system of faults dismembers the 5 million ounce Magdala gold deposit. These faults represent a combination of neoformed faults and inherited faults that reflect deformation associated with stress tensors of variable orientation and stress shape ratio (φ). The fault geometry is strongly controlled by the pre-existing rheology. Faults have propagated around the flanks of an antiformal basalt dome, along earlier ductile cleavages and the margins of porphyry dykes. Many of the faults do not have Andersonian geometries and there is no correlation between the orientation of the faults and the palaeostress directions. Much of the faulting is associated with the emplacement of porphyry dykes, additional gold mineralisation related to plutonism and late-stage deformation post-dating the intrusion of the Stawell pluton. Systematic mapping of extension veins associated with faults, striations and conjugate joint sets allowed the construction of a revised and more robust history of brittle deformation. This successfully predicted the offset direction of the currently mined Magdala ore body beneath the studied system of faults. The use of extension veins was a critical aspect of the analysis. If striations on the fault surfaces had solely been used, the offset direction of the new Golden Gift orebody would not have been correctly ascertained. The palaeostress history was delineated via use of compression and tension dihedra, stress inversion of slip data and calculation of theoretical resolved shear stress for faults with orientations similar to those mapped. The calculation of theoretical resolved shear stress directions highlights the importance that the intermediate stress has on the slip direction for faults whose pole does not lie in the plane containing σ1 and σ3.  相似文献

We use numerically modelled data sets to investigate the sensitivity of electromagnetic interferometry by multidimensional deconvolution to spatial receiver sampling. Interferometry by multidimensional deconvolution retrieves the reflection response below the receivers after decomposition of the fields into upward and downward decaying fields and deconvolving the upward decaying field by the downward decaying field. Thereby the medium above the receiver level is replaced with a homogeneous half‐space, the sources are redatumed to the receiver level and the direct field is removed. Consequently, in a marine setting the retrieved reflection response is independent of any effect of the water layer and the air above. A drawback of interferometry by multidimensional deconvolution is a possibly unstable matrix inversion, which is necessary to retrieve the reflection response. Additionally, in order to correctly separate the upward and the downward decaying fields, the electromagnetic fields need to be sampled properly. We show that the largest possible receiver spacing depends on two parameters: the vertical distance between the source and the receivers and the length of the source. The receiver spacing should not exceed the larger of these two parameters. Besides these two parameters, the presence of inhomogeneities close to the receivers may also require a dense receiver sampling. We show that by using the synthetic aperture concept, an elongated source can be created from conventionally acquired data in order to overcome these strict sampling criteria. Finally, we show that interferometry may work under real‐world conditions with random noise and receiver orientation and positioning errors.  相似文献

Progressive rock‐fall failures in natural rock slopes are common in many environments, but often elude detailed quantitative documentation and analysis. Here we present high‐resolution photography, video, and laser scanning data that document spatial and temporal patterns of a 15‐month‐long sequence of at least 14 rock falls from the Rhombus Wall, a sheeted granitic cliff in Yosemite Valley, California. The rock‐fall sequence began on 26 August 2009 with a small failure at the tip of an overhanging rock slab. Several hours later, a series of five rock falls totaling 736 m3 progressed upward along a sheeting joint behind the overhanging slab. Over the next 3 weeks, audible cracking occurred on the Rhombus Wall, suggesting crack propagation, while visual monitoring revealed opening of a sheeting joint adjacent to the previous failure surface. On 14 September 2009 a 110 m3 slab detached along this sheeting joint. Additional rock falls between 30 August and 20 November 2010, totaling 187 m3, radiated outward from the initial failure area along cliff (sub)parallel sheeting joints. We suggest that these progressive failures might have been related to stress redistributions accompanying propagation of sheeting joints behind the cliff face. Mechanical analyses indicate that tensile stresses should occur perpendicular to the cliff face and open sheeting joints, and that sheeting joints should propagate parallel to a cliff face from areas of stress concentrations. The analyses also account for how sheeting joints can propagate to lengths many times greater than their depths behind cliff faces. We posit that as a region of failure spreads across a cliff face, stress concentrations along its margin will spread with it, promoting further crack propagation and rock falls. Published in 2012. Debris flows generated during rain storms on recently burned areas have destroyed lives and property throughout the Western U.S. Field evidence indicate that unlike landslide-triggered debris flows, these events have no identifiable initiation source and can occur with little or no antecedent moisture. Using rain gage and response data from five fires in Colorado and southern California, we document the rainfall conditions that have triggered post-fire debris flows and develop empirical rainfall intensity–duration thresholds for the occurrence of debris flows and floods following wildfires in these settings. This information can provide guidance for warning systems and planning for emergency response in similar settings.Debris flows were produced from 25 recently burned basins in Colorado in response to 13 short-duration, high-intensity convective storms. Debris flows were triggered after as little as six to 10 min of storm rainfall. About 80% of the storms that generated debris flows lasted less than 3 h, with most of the rain falling in less than 1 h. The storms triggering debris flows ranged in average intensity between 1.0 and 32.0 mm/h, and had recurrence intervals of two years or less. Threshold rainfall conditions for floods and debris flows sufficiently large to pose threats to life and property from recently burned areas in south-central, and southwestern, Colorado are defined by: I = 6.5D 0.7 and I = 9.5D 0.7, respectively, where I = rainfall intensity (in mm/h) and D = duration (in hours).Debris flows were generated from 68 recently burned areas in southern California in response to long-duration frontal storms. The flows occurred after as little as two hours, and up to 16 h, of low-intensity (2–10 mm/h) rainfall. The storms lasted between 5.5 and 33 h, with average intensities between 1.3 and 20.4 mm/h, and had recurrence intervals of two years or less. Threshold rainfall conditions for life- and property-threatening floods and debris flows during the first winter season following fires in Ventura County, and in the San Bernardino, San Gabriel and San Jacinto Mountains of southern California are defined by I = 12.5D0.4, and I = 7.2D0.4, respectively. A threshold defined for flood and debris-flow conditions following a year of vegetative recovery and sediment removal for the San Bernardino, San Gabriel and San Jacinto Mountains of I = 14.0D0.5 is approximately 25 mm/h higher than that developed for the first year following fires.The thresholds defined here are significantly lower than most identified for unburned settings, perhaps because of the difference between extremely rapid, runoff-dominated processes acting in burned areas and longer-term, infiltration-dominated processes on unburned hillslopes.  相似文献

Wallaby is a major gold deposit of the St Ives Gold field of Western Australia, with an estimated resource of 8 million ounces of gold. It has a well-established paragenesis across five vein sets that displays macroscopic evidence of changing redox through time; from hematite to magnetite. Micro-analysis of pyrite from each vein generation shows a progressive and gradual change in redox conditions. The sulfur isotope composition has a δ34S range of −7.7 to +9.8‰ using 3 μm spots on the Sensitive High Resolution Iron Micro Probe-Stable Isotope (SHRIMP-SI). Negative values indicative of an oxidized sulfur signature are found in the earliest generation of pyrite (which coexists with hematite) that also contains high concentrations of As, Ni, Zn, Ag, Sb, Cu and Pb. Conversely, positive values representative of reduced sulfur are found in later generations of pyrite, with lower concentrations of As, Ni, Sb, Cu, Zn and Pb. These later pyrite crystals display higher As/Ni, As/Sb, and As/Bi, and lower Cu/Te. These geochemical trends are the result of redox controlled transport and partitioning into pyrite of minor and trace elements now within the pyrite structure. Previous studies suggested a single orogenic event formed the Wallaby Deposit. This is not supported by the present study. Trace element ratios such as As/Ni clearly delineate the high Au generations and could be used as an exploration tool. It is suggested that pyrite from the Wallaby Gold Deposit formed via desulfidation and a gradual change in redox conditions within an evolving fluid and did not result from mixing of two separate fluids as previously advocated. Utilizing pyrite to link the entire fluid history of Wallaby demonstrates the general use of pyrite as a valuable mineral tracer in gold-bearing fluid systems.  相似文献

Water samples (springs, creeks, mine adits) from different former mining districts of the Harz Mountains and the nearby Kupferschiefer (copper shale) basin of Sangerhausen were analysed for major ions and trace metals. Due to more intensive water rock interactions including the ore minerals, the mine water concentrations of main components and trace metals are generally higher compared to non mining affected surface waters of the mountain range. Furthermore, the content of major ions in mine water is enriched by mixing processes with saline waters from Permian layers in the Kupferschiefer district and at the deeper levels of the mines in the Upper Harz Mountains. The waters of the different mining districts can be distinguished by trace metal occurrences and concentrations derived from the different ore bodies. Water from the Kupferschiefer mines shows the highest Na, Cl, Cu, Mo and U concentrations, whereas a combination of elevated As and Se concentrations is typical for most of the samples from the mines around St. Andreasberg. However, there are exceptions, and some water samples of all the investigated mining districts do not follow these general trends. Despite the influence of mining activities and ore mineralisation, hydrochemical effects due to rain water dilution can be seen in most of the waters. According to the elevation of the mountain range, higher precipitation rates decrease the ion concentrations in the waters of springs, creeks and mine adits.  相似文献

Reservoir stimulation requires a model to evaluate the fracture path and closure for the simultaneous or sequential propagation of the hydraulic fracture (HF). This paper presents a fluid-solid coupled model to simulate multi-stage HF propagation. A non-linear joint model is proposed to evaluate the fracture closure when the created fractures are elastically propped. HF closure continues until the balance of external stress matches the proppant's resistance. The reservoir along the horizontal wellbore is not stimulated equally by the multi-stage fracturing. The HFs in the subsequent stage are ‘repelled’ and restrained by the HFs in the previous stage.  相似文献

Hudson River sediment microcosms from Piles Creek (PC), Piermont Marsh (PM), and Iona Island (II) were amended with ∼100 mM nitrate or sulfate to stimulate anaerobic bioremediation. Nitrate and sulfate decreased over two years of field incubation and the fraction of these losses due to diffusion to the water column was predicted using Fick’s law. Apparent diffusion (Dapp) values of 1-4 × 10−10 m2 s−1 predicted the majority of loss/gain from/to the sediments by 700 d, but not at all times. Effective diffusion (Deff) values predicted by the porosity function (Deff = Dmol ε4/3) were larger than those observed in the field, and field data indicates a cube power relationship: Deff = Dmol ε3. Dapp greatly increased in surficial layers at PM and PC in year two, suggesting that bioadvection caused by bioturbating organisms had occurred. The effects of bioturbation on transport to/from the sediments are modeled, and results can be applied to various sediment treatment scenarios such as capping.  相似文献
