Performance of quasilinear elastic constitutive models in simulation of geosynthetic encased columns
Past numerical simulations of geosynthetic encased columns (GECs) using different versions of the quasilinear elastic hyperbolic model for the encased granular material have, in certain cases, yielded unrealistic results. In this paper the cause of such results is investigated by performing three-dimensional finite element analyses of GECs in soft clay, utilizing three common functional forms of the hyperbolic model for the encased granular material. Results indicate that one form of the hyperbolic model can predict an unrealistic lateral response for GECs during application of load to the column. In addition, the inability of hyperbolic models to properly account for soil behavior near failure compromises their ability to realistically capture the behavior of encased granular soil in GECs. Modeling the behavior of soil near failure is essential for properly simulating the behavior of GECs, as soil shear failure is necessary to mobilize the tensile stresses in the encasement and improve the stress–displacement response of the GEC. Although this type of hyperbolic model behavior was demonstrated for the specific case of encased soil in a GEC, the limitations of the hyperbolic model described herein apply equally to other geotechnical problems in which some portion of the soil mass is at or near failure. 相似文献

Influences of tides, freshwater discharge, and winds on water properties in the St. Jones River estuary (USA), a Delaware
National Estuarine Research Reserve, were investigated using multiyear records of sea level, salinity, and turbidity, supplemented
by a current profiler time series in 2007. Results demonstrate that instantaneous properties fluctuate with semidiurnal tides
and resonant overtides, whereas tidal mean variations are forced by seasonal freshwater inflow and offshore winds. Mean sea
level and salinity are highest in summer and vary with seasonal water temperature and rainfall, whereas sea level variability
and turbidity are highest in winter on account of storm effects. Salinity and discharge modeling suggest that much (43–65%)
of the freshwater resident in the estuary is derived from non-point sources below the head of tide. This diffuse freshwater
inflow produces a seaward surface slope and weak mean current, which temporarily reverses under the influence of storm–wind

This paper introduces a new method to estimate the long-term regional hurricane wind and storm surge hazard. The output is a relatively small set of hurricane scenarios that together represent the regional hazard. For each scenario, the method produces a hazard-consistent annual occurrence probability, and wind speeds and surge levels throughout the study area. These scenarios can be used for subsequent evacuation or loss estimation modeling. This optimization-based probabilistic scenario (OPS) method involves first simulating tens of thousands of candidate hurricane scenarios with wind speeds and approximate surge depths. A mixed-integer linear optimization is then used to select a subset of scenarios and assign hazard-consistent annual occurrence probabilities to each. Finally, a surge model is used to estimate accurate surge depths for the reduced set of events. The method considers the correlation between winds and surge depths and the spatial correlations of each; it is computationally efficient; and it makes explicit the tradeoff between the number of scenarios selected and the errors introduced by using a reduced set of events. A case study for Eastern North Carolina is presented in which a final set of 97 hurricanes provides unbiased results with errors small enough for many practical uses. 相似文献

In this note we point out a bias error that affects calibrations of ‘Bagnold-type’ energetics sediment transport models. Calibrations based on instantaneous measurements of fluid velocity and suspended sediment concentration incur an inherent increase in correlation between measured and predicted sediment transport rates because the measured fluid velocity resides on both sides of the calibration equation. Random, fully uncorrelated velocity and suspended load time series tests comparing the energetics model with a similar model which divides both sides of the equation by the velocity, showed that having velocity on both sides increased the R2 correlation coefficient from its expected near zero value to 0.45. This “false correlation” can be as high as 0.55 when there is a high mean concentration relative to the concentration variance and there are small mean velocities. In contrast, when there is relatively high variability in concentration in the presence of large mean velocities (e.g. suspension events of coarse grains under waves in the surf zone with an alongshore current), the “false correlation” reduced to 0.35. Comparisons with data from two swash experiments and a surf zone study showed a similar increase in “false correlation”. Associated with the “false correlation” was a 4-fold overestimate of the calibration coefficient used to tune the sediment transport model under simulated noisy field measurement conditions. 相似文献

Near 1 AU the solar wind structure associated with the solar flare of 14 July 2000 (Bastille Day) consisted of a large high-speed
stream of 15 July and five nearby small streams during a 10-day period. At the leading edge of the large high-speed stream,
in less than 6 hours, the flow speed increased from 600 km s−1 to 1100 km s−1, the magnetic field intensity increased from 10 nT to 60 nT, and an interaction region was identified. The interaction region
was bounded between the pair of a forward shock F and a reverse shock R. Additional forward shocks were also identified at the leading edge of each of the five smaller streams. This paper presents
a magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulation using ACE plasma and magnetic field data near 1 AU as input to study the radial evolution
of the Bastille Day solar wind event. The two shocks, F and R, propagated in opposite directions away from each other in the solar wind frame and interacted with neighboring shocks and
streams; the spatial and temporal extent of the interaction region continued to increase with the heliocentric distance. The
solar wind was restructured from a series of streams at 1 AU to a huge merged interaction region (MIR) extending over a period
of 12 days at 5.5 AU. Throughout the interior of the MIR bounded by the shock pair F and R the magnetic field intensity was a few times stronger than that outside the MIR. The simulation shows how merging of shocks,

conclusion Presented are results of a 3-D limit-equilibrium stability analysis of wet conical deposits. A simplified methodology to include the effect of increased pore pressures, resulting from a brief and heavy rainfall, is suggested. The results, condensed into charts, enable one to estimate the factor of safety of a conical heap. We present results from the initial flight of our Balloon Air CHerenkov (BACH) payload. BACH detects air Cherenkov radiation from cosmic ray nuclei as coincident flashes in two optical modules. The flight (dubbed PDQ–BACH) took place on April 22, 1998 from Ft. Sumner, New Mexico. During an exposure of 2.75 h, with a typical threshold energy for iron nuclei of 2.2×1013 eV, we observed several events cleanly identifiable as iron group nuclei. Analysis of the data yields a new flux measurement that is fully consistent with that reported by other investigations. 相似文献

X-ray line-profile analysis has proved to be the most direct diagnostic of the kinematics and spatial distribution of the very hot plasma around O stars. The Doppler-broadened line profiles provide information about the velocity distribution of the hot plasma, while the wavelength-dependent attenuation across a line profile provides information about the absorption to the hot plasma, thus providing a strong constraint on its physical location. In this paper, we apply several analysis techniques to the emission lines in the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) spectrum of the late-O supergiant ζ Ori (O9.7 Ib), including the fitting of a simple line-profile model. We show that there is distinct evidence for blueshifts and profile asymmetry, as well as broadening in the X-ray emission lines of ζ Ori. These are the observational hallmarks of a wind-shock X-ray source, and the results for ζ Ori are very similar to those for the earlier O star, ζ Pup, which we have previously shown to be well fit by the same wind-shock line-profile model. The more subtle effects on the line-profile morphologies in ζ Ori, as compared to ζ Pup, are consistent with the somewhat lower density wind in this later O supergiant. In both stars, the wind optical depths required to explain the mildly asymmetric X-ray line profiles imply reductions in the effective opacity of nearly an order of magnitude, which may be explained by some combination of mass-loss rate reduction and large-scale clumping, with its associated porosity-based effects on radiation transfer. In the context of the recent reanalysis of the helium-like line intensity ratios in both ζ Ori and ζ Pup, and also in light of recent work questioning the published mass-loss rates in OB stars, these new results indicate that the X-ray emission from ζ Ori can be understood within the framework of the standard wind-shock scenario for hot stars. 相似文献

The core collapse of a massive star in the Milky Way will produce a neutrino burst, intense enough to be detected by existing underground detectors. The AMANDA neutrino telescope located deep in the South Pole ice can detect MeV neutrinos by a collective rate increase in all photo-multipliers on top of dark noise. The main source of light comes from positrons produced in the CC reaction of anti-electron neutrinos on free protons
. This paper describes the first supernova search performed on the full sets of data taken during 1997 and 1998 (215 days of live time) with 302 of the detector's optical modules. No candidate events resulted from this search. The performance of the detector is calculated, yielding a 70% coverage of the galaxy with one background fake per year with 90% efficiency for the detector configuration under study. An upper limit at the 90% c.l. on the rate of stellar collapses in the Milky Way is derived, yielding 4.3 events per year. A trigger algorithm is presented and its performance estimated.
