Hopanoids have been widely used as characteristic biomarkers to study inputs of bacterial biomass to sediments because they are preserved in the geologic record. A limited number of studies have been performed on hopanoid biomarkers in soils. The present study examined the distribution and potential preservation of hopanoids in soils that are developed under different climatic conditions and varying vegetative inputs. Solvent extraction and sequential chemical degradation methods were employed to extract both “free” and “bound” hopanoids, from three grassland soils, a grassland–forest transition soil, and a forest soil from Western Canada. Identification and quantification of hopanoids in the soil samples were carried out by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Methylbishomohopanol, bishomohopanol and bishomohopanoic acid were detected in all solvent extracts. The base hydrolysis and ruthenium tetroxide extracts contained only bishomohopanoic acid at a concentration range of 0.8–8.8 μg/gC and 2.2–28.3 μg/gC, respectively. The acid hydrolysis procedure did not release detectable amounts of hopanoids. The solvent extraction yielded the greatest amounts of “free” hopanoids in two of the grassland soils (Dark Brown and Black Chernozems) and in the forest soil (Gray Luvisol). In contrast, the chemical degradation methods resulted in higher amounts of “bound” hopanoids in the third grassland soil (Brown Chernozem) and the transition soil (Dark Gray Chernozem), indicating that more hopanoids exist in the “bound” form in these soils. Overall, the forest and the transition soils contained more hopanoids than the grassland soils. This is hypothesized to be due to the greater degradation of hopanoids in the grassland soils and or sorption to clay minerals, as compared to the forest and transition soils.  相似文献

The process of pressure solution is defined as the dissolution of materials under high stress at grain-to-grain contacts and precipitation at interfaces under low stress. The kinetics of this process are still poorly understood mainly because of the large timescales involved. In this research, the Surface Forces Apparatus (SFA) technique was coupled with an optical interference technique for in situ visualization of the nanoscale deformations and thickness changes. The SFA was used to measure the forces (or pressures) and distances between two solid surfaces pressed together with a thin film between them. Using the SFA, combined with geological observations, we are studying the short-range colloidal forces between surfaces of mica and silica at the nanoscale such as van der Waals, electrostatic, and hydration forces.

This study involves two cases, the symmetric case of mica in contact with mica and the asymmetric case of a quartz surface in contact with mica. Our results reveal highly subtle effects depending on the nature and concentration of the counterions present in the solution either of Na+, Ca2+, or mixtures of these ions, as well as on the pH. For the symmetric case, the equilibrium interactions of force F or pressure P versus fluid film thickness T have been measured between the mica surfaces across aqueous films in the thickness range from T = 25 Å down to contact separations around T = 0 Å, and depend on the solution conditions and applied lithostatic pressure. Measurements have also been made of the rates of diffusion of ions through such ultra-thin films and on the precipitation and growth of ionic crystallite layers on the surfaces. Our results show that the diffusion coefficient of hydrated sodium is two orders of magnitude lower than the diffusion of water into mica–mica cleavage and a factor of 40 lower than the coefficient of sodium ions in bulk water.

For the asymmetric case, the dissolution of the quartz surface was observed to be dependent on the interfacial fluid composition and pH, the externally applied ‘lithostatic’ pressure, and the type of crystalline structure exposed to the mica surface. Our experiments also show that there is an initial stage after fresh solution is added in which the spacing between the surfaces increases, however, the thickness started decreasing steadily after approximately 4 h of exposure independently of the crystallinity of the quartz surface. For a particular set of conditions, the process eventually slows down and reaches equilibrium after some time, but a further increase in pressure restarts the dissolution process. This is also true for the addition of fresh interfacial solution during the experiment after a period of thickness fluctuation. These results are consistent with the observation that pressure solution of quartz is greatly enhanced with the presence of mica.  相似文献

Regional-scale washover deposits along the Florida Gulf and Atlantic coasts induced by multiple hurricanes in 2004 and 2005 were studied through coring, trenching, ground-penetrating radar imaging, aerial photography, and prestorm and poststorm beach-profile surveys. Erosional and depositional characteristics in different barrier-island sub-environments, including dune field, interior wetland and back-barrier bay were examined. Over the eroded dune fields, the washover deposits are characterized by an extensive horizontal basal erosional surface truncating the old dune deposits and horizontal to slightly landward-dipping stratification. Over the marshes in the barrier-island interior, the washover deposits are characterized by steep tabular bedding, with no erosion at the bottom. Overwash into the back-barrier bay produced the thickest deposits characterized by steep, prograding sigmoidal bedding. No significant erosional feature was observed at the bottom. Washover deposits within the dense interior mangrove swamp demonstrate both normal and reversed graded bedding. The washover deposits caused by hurricanes Frances (2004) and Jeanne (2004) along the southern Florida Atlantic coast barrier islands are substantially different from those along the northern Florida barrier islands caused by Ivan (2004) and Dennis (2005) in terms of regional extension, erosional features and sedimentary structures. These differences are controlled by different overall barrier-island morphology, vegetation type and density, and sediment properties. The homogeneity of sediment along the northern Florida coast makes distinguishing between washover deposits from Ivan and Dennis difficult. In contrast, along the Atlantic coast barrier islands, the two overwash events, as demonstrated by two phases of graded bedding of the bimodal sediments, are easily distinguishable.  相似文献

Small divisors caused by certain linear combinations of frequencies appear in all analytical planetary theories. With the exception of the deep resonance between Neptune and Pluto, they can be removed at the expense of introducing secular and mixed secular terms, limiting the domain in which the solution is valid. Because of them classical solutions are known not to converge uniformly; Poincaré referred to them as asymptotic. The KAM theory shows that if one is far enough from exact commensurability and has small enough planetary masses, expansions exist which will converge to quasi-periodic orbits. Solutions showing very small divisors are excluded from this region of convergence. The question of whether they are intrinsic to the problem or are just manifestations of the method of solution is not settled. Problems with a single commensurabily that can be isolated from the rest of the Hamiltonian may have solutions with no small divisors. The problem of two or more commensurabilities remains unsolved.  相似文献

The waters of Naples Bay, Florida, and associated waterways were monitored for potentially pathogenic bacteria, specificallyVibrio cholerae, V. parahaemolyticus, Salmonella, andPseudomonas aeruginosa. Ten to twelve stations were sampled over a period of eleven months.Vibrio cholerae was recovered in 33.6% of the 116 total samples andSalmonella in 28.4% of the samples. The results show that these bacteria exist in these waters and can be recovered from areas with both high and low numbers of total and fecal coliforms.  相似文献

Very low frequency (VLF) military communications systems provide a primary field that can be used for shallow geophysical surveys to locate ground water contamination and vertical geologic contacts. Useful properties that can be easily obtained from the interaction of the earth and the primary field are the magnitude of the vertical secondary magnetic field, the surface impedence, and the phase angle between the electrical and magnetic horizontal components. The variations in the secondary magnetic field can be related to vertical geologic contacts, such as the edges of landfill trenches. The surface impedence yields an apparent terrain conductivity, which can be used to locate low-resistivity anomalies often associated with contaminated ground water. The phase angle gives information on vertical variations in resistivity, phase angles less than 45° indicating increasing resistivity with depth. The depth of penetration of the VLF field is about one skin depth. For a frequency of 20 kHz, the skin depth in meters is approximately equal to 3.67 where p is terrain resistivity in ohmmeters.  相似文献

Hurricane Andrew, one of the strongest storms of the century, crossed the southern part of the Florida peninsula on 24 August 1992. Its path crossed the Florida Everglades and exited in the national park across a mangrove-dominated coast onto the shallow, low-energy, inner shelf. The storm caused extensive breakage and defoliation in the mangrove community; full recovery will take decades. It produced no extensive sedimentation unit; only local and ephemeral ebb-surge deposits. The discontinuous shelly storm beach ridge was breached at multiple locations, and it moved landward a few meters. After seven months, there was little geologic indication that the storm had passed. It is likely that the stratigraphic record in this area will not contain any recognizable features of the passage of Hurricane Andrew.  相似文献
