Current status of multimodel superensemble and operational NWP forecast of the Indian summer monsoon 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In the last thirty years great strides have been made by large-scale operational numerical weather prediction models towards
improving skills for the medium range time-scale of 7 days. This paper illustrates the use of these current forecasts towards
the construction of a consensus multimodel forecast product called the superensemble. This procedure utilizes 120 of the recent-past
forecasts from these models to arrive at the training phase statistics. These statistics are described by roughly 107 weights. Use of these weights provides the possibility for real-time medium range forecasts with the superensemble. We show
the recent status of this procedure towards real-time forecasts for the Asian summer monsoon. The member models of our suite
include ECMWF, NCEP/EMC, JMA, NOGAPS (US Navy), BMRC, RPN (Canada) and an FSU global spectral forecast model. We show in this
paper the skill scores for day 1 through day 6 of forecasts from standard variables such as winds, temperature, 500 hPa geopotential
height, sea level pressure and precipitation. In all cases we noted that the superensemble carries a higher skill compared
to each of the member models and their ensemble mean. The skill matrices we use include the RMS errors, the anomaly correlations
and equitable threat scores. For many of these forecasts the improvements of skill for the superensemble over the best model
was found to be quite substantial. This real-time product is being provided to many interested research groups. The FSU multimodel
superensemble, in real-time, stands out for providing the least errors among all of the operational large scale models. 相似文献

Maps are an increasingly used source of information and it is therefore essential to develop map skills in students. A fundamental factor affecting the choice of map skills and the way they are developed is the teacher and his/her concept of map work. Based on the results of a survey and semi-structured interviews among Czech teachers, this study identifies three basic conceptual types of teachers: “Navigators” and “Problem-Oriented” and “Source-Oriented” teachers. Similarities with teachers’ concepts of map-skill development identified in previous studies are discussed together with means of improvement. 相似文献

Conventional practices in positioning maps within books and journals and in referencing illustrations from the text tend to discourage the reader's careful examination of supporting graphics. By actively pursuing a close coordination of maps and text, both author and editor can improve the communication of geographic facts and ideas. Future developments in computer-assisted cartography will aslo promote this coordination. The professional press should reconsider dysfunctional stylistic guidelines that might inhibit authors from more completely directing the attention of their readers. 相似文献

Professor Duzheng YE's name has been familiar to me ever since my postdoctoral years at MIT with Professors Jule CHARNEY and Norman PHILLIPS, back in the late 1960 s. I had the enormous pleasure of meeting Professor YE personally in 1992 in Beijing. His concern to promote the very best science and to use it well, and his thinking on multi-level orderly human activities, reminds me not only of the communication skills we need as scientists but also of the multi-level nature of science itself. Here I want to say something(a) about what science is;(b) about why multi-level thinking—and taking more than one viewpoint—is so important for scientific as well as for other forms of understanding; and(c) about what is meant, at a deep level, by "scientific understanding" and trying to communicate it, not only with lay persons but also across professional disciplines. Abstract The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation has resulted in declining classroom time dedicated to geography instruction, especially in grades K-8. To combat this problem, a National Geographic Society Grosvenor grant provided resources allowing 28 teacher-authors to generate a package of more than 80 lessons that combine the teaching of geography and mathematics skills tested on Arizona's state mandated testing. When taught in 113 piloting classrooms that mirror Arizona's student demographics, GeoMath lessons generated statistically significant increases in performance in math skills and improved understanding of geography standards. In addition, a fourth of the K-8 piloting teachers surveyed felt that teaching GeoMath lessons increased in their level of comfort in teaching mathematics. Given the success of this GeoMath strategy, and a prior GeoLiteracy program, we advocate here a national agenda of articulating geography curriculum to high-stakes tested subjects of reading and math. 相似文献

Abstract This article is an overview of the curriculum reform in Switzerland in the 1990s. It describes the grass-roots reform process in geography education in upper secondary schools and its impact on the development of new teaching materials. These ancillary materials are based on teaching methods and strategies, the effectiveness of which are empirically shown by results. The teaching units complement the thematic and methodological aims in the national curriculum and the federal regulations and were designed through a partnership of teachers, teacher educators and scientists.
