The oxygen isotope composition of phosphate from tooth enamel of rodents (δ18Op) constitutes a valuable proxy to reconstruct past air temperatures in continental environments. This method has been applied to rodent dental remains from three genera, Arvicola sp., Microtus sp. and Dicrostonyx sp., coming from Taillis-des-Coteaux, Vienne, France. This archaeological site contains an exceptionally preserved sedimentary sequence spanning almost the whole Upper Palaeolithic, including seven stratigraphic layers dated from 35 to 17 cal ka BP. The abundant presence of rodent remains offers the opportunity to quantify the climatic fluctuations coeval of the various stages of human occupation of the site. Differences between δ18Op values of Arvicola sp. and Microtus sp. teeth are interpreted as the result of heterochrony in tooth formation as well as differences in ecology. Mean δ18Op values of Microtus sp. are preferentially used to reconstruct summer air temperatures, which range from 16.0 ± 3.7 to 19.1 ± 3.1°C throughout the sedimentary sequence; however, the highest variability is observed during the last glacial maximum.  相似文献

We have examined, using a 12 Tesla FTICR-MS instrument, the impact of varying thermal maturity level on a suite of 9 related crude oils charged from source rocks covering most of the liquid petroleum generating portion of the oil window (0.68–1.11% vitrinite reflectance equivalent (%Re)). The sample suite was analyzed as whole oils under three different conditions, electrospray ionization (ESI) in positive and negative ion mode to analyze basic and acidic components, respectively, and atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) in positive ion mode, for sulfur and hydrocarbon species.Increasing oil maturity level had a strong influence on the composition of all compound classes in the oils with several major observations evident:The relative apparent abundances of all heteroatom containing compound classes detected in this study, using all ionization modes, decrease systematically with increasing oil maturation levels. Both aromatic hydrocarbons, detectable in APPI mode, and NSO compound classes (detectable in both ESI and APPI modes), as broad classes, are becoming more aromatic (shift to a greater predominance of higher DBE group members) and dealkylated (decreasing average molecular mass of individual compound groups), with increasing maturation level in the oil suite. Several putative oil maturity level dependent, molecular ratios were identified in the study. Of particular note, the relative abundance ratios of heteroatom compound classes tentatively identified as alkylated carbazoles, quinolines and benzothiophenes, compared to their benzannulated homologues are very sensitive to maturation level. Several groups of compounds show interesting and specific carbon number distributions, suggesting there may be hints of specific molecular markers in the FTICR-MS data. One observation of note is the strong increase in the relative abundance of protonated hydrocarbon components with DBE 5. We speculate this might reflect the presence of previously unreported higher molecular weight diamondoid (diamantane) species in oils with up to 40 carbon atoms or more, at advanced maturity levels. Such species may prove very valuable as molecular markers in highly mature fluids, such as those currently being produced from some shale reservoirs. Covariation of quantitative GC–MS data for alkylated hetero aromatic sulfur and nitrogen compounds in this oil suite, together with the corresponding FTICR-MS data from compounds believed to be, based on accurate mass, alkylated sulfur and alkylated nitrogen compounds, suggests that FTICR-MS already has some very rudimentary quantitation capabilities.  相似文献

Effects of O+ ions on magnetic reconnection in the magnetotail are examined in a Harris equilibrium using a combination of linear Vlasov theory and large-scale driven and non-driven two-dimensional fully kinetic particle simulations. Linear theory of multiple species plasma indicates that the growth rate is rather insensitive to the composition of the background (lobe) or its temperature but more sensitive to the properties of the current carriers. Thus O+ can affect significant changes to the linear growth rate of tearing mode only as a current carrier. However, it is demonstrated that in the nonlinear stage reconnection can effectively move trace material from the lobes into the current sheet proper. If the supply of lobe markers (like O+) is sufficiently permanent in the lobe, an initially proton-dominated current sheet can be virtually replaced by the marker ions through this “flushing effect”. The dominance of marker ions introduces finite Larmor radius signatures with marker gyroradii scales rather than that of the protons. In this way, the presence of heavier marker species in the lobe can lead to (i) reduced efficiency of energy conversion, (ii) reduction in the number and repetition frequency of secondary islands, (iii) broadening of the quadrupole magnetic structure, (iv) slowing down of the coalescence process and (v) modification of the composition of the ion current carriers. Using Cluster observations, we show the evidence for the “flushing effect” in the data. Detailed comparison with observations is planned for future work.  相似文献

Soils in similar geomorphic settings in hyperarid deserts (< 50 mm yr1) should have similar characteristics because a negative moisture balance controls their development. However, Reg soils in the hyperarid southern Negev and Namib deserts are distinctly different. Soils developed on stable alluvial surfaces with only direct input of rainfall and dust depend heavily on rainfall characteristics. Annual rainfall amount can be similar (15-30 mm), but storm duration can drastically alter Reg soil properties in deserts. The cooler fall/winter and dry hot summers of the southern Negev Desert with a predominance brief (≤ 1 day) rainstorms result in gypsic-saline soils without any calcic soil horizon. Although the Namib Desert receives only 50-60% of the southern Negev annual rainfall, its rainstorm duration is commonly 2-4 days. This improves leaching of the top soil under even lower annual rainfall amount and results in weeks-long grass cover. The long-term cumulative effect of these rare rain-grass relationships produces a calcic-gypsic-saline soil. The development of these different kinds of desert soils highlights the importance of daily to seasonal rainfall characteristics in influencing soil-moisture regime in deserts, and has important implications for the use of key desert soil properties as proxies in paleoclimatology.  相似文献

Paired measurements of Mg/Ca and δ18O of Globigerenoides sacculifer from an Eastern Arabian Sea (EAS) sediment core indicate that sea-surface temperature (SST) varied within 2°C and sea-surface salinity within 2 psu during the last 100 ka. SST was coldest (∼ 27°C) during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 4 and 2. Sea-surface salinity was highest (∼ 37.5 psu) during most of the last glacial period (∼ 60–18 ka), concurrent with increased δ18OG.sacculifer and C/N ratios of organic matter and indicative of sustained intense winter monsoons. SST time series are influenced by both Greenland and Antarctic climates. However, the sea-surface salinity time series and the deglacial warming in the SST record (beginning at ∼ 18 ka) compare well with the LR04 benthic δ18O-stack and Antarctic temperatures. This suggests a teleconnection between the climate in the Southern Hemisphere and the EAS. Therefore, the last 100-ka variability in EAS climatology appears to have evolved in response to a combination of global climatic forcings and regional monsoons. The most intense summer monsoons within the Holocene occurred at ∼ 8 ka and are marked by SST cooling of ∼ 1°C, sea-surface salinity decrease of 0.5 psu, and δ18OG.sacculifer decrease of 0.2‰.  相似文献

青海湖Q14B沉积物柱芯560~415 cm(约14.0~10.5 ka B.P.)段,介壳1δ8O高于无机碳酸盐1δ8O可能反映了此时青海湖表层水温高于底层水温;介壳1δ8O与无机碳酸盐1δ8O之间的较小差值可能揭示了此时青海湖水位很浅,气候干冷;介壳1δ8O变幅大于无机碳酸盐1δ8O变幅,则可能源于此时青海湖水位大幅度波动导致的底层水温变幅超过表层,以及无机碳酸盐1δ8O测自全碳酸盐所致。在利用湖泊碳酸盐1δ8O进行气候及环境变化研究时,有必要分别测试不同种属介形虫及不同无机碳酸盐矿物的同位素值。  相似文献
