The empirically derived phase curves of terrestrial planets strongly distinguish between airless Mercury, cloud-covered Venus, and the intermediate case of Mars. The function for Mercury is steeply peaked near phase angle zero due to powerful backscattering from its surface, while that for Venus has 100 times less contrast and exhibits a brightness excess near 170° due to Mie scattering from droplets in the atmosphere. The phase curve of Mars falls between those of Mercury and Venus, and there are variations in luminosity due to the planet’s rotation, seasons, and atmospheric states. The phase function and geometric albedo of the Earth are estimated from published albedos values. The curves for Mercury, Venus and Mars are compared to that of the Earth as well as theoretical phase functions for giant planets. The parameters of these different phase functions can be used to characterize exoplanets.  相似文献

In 1999, observations of the Venus nightglow with the Keck I telescope showed that the 5577 Å oxygen green line was a significant feature, comparable in intensity to the terrestrial green line. Subsequent measurements have been carried out at the Apache Point Observatory (APO) and again at Keck I, confirming the presence of the line with substantially varying intensity. The Herzberg II emission intensity, from the O2(c-X) transition, was found to have an intensity near 3 kR in one APO run, comparable to the value found on all previous measurements. Thus, of the three oxygen features seen at Venus—the green line, the Herzberg II emission system, and the 1.27-μ 0-0 band of the IR atmospheric system—the first is quite variable, the second is relatively constant, while the third also shows large variations. The reaction between O2(, v=0) and CO is considered as a possible mechanism to explain green line production and its variability, as well as the variability of the 1.27-μ emission and the stability of the CO2 atmosphere. This reaction may catalyze CO2 recombination some five orders of magnitude faster than the slow three-body O + CO reaction.  相似文献

The new ESA Venus Express orbiter is the first mission applying the probing technique of solar and stellar occultation to the atmosphere of Venus, with the SPICAV/SOIR instrument. SOIR is a new type of spectrometer used for solar occultations in the range 2.2-4.3 μm. Thanks to a high spectral resolving power R∼15,000-20,000 (unprecedented in planetary space exploration), a new gaseous absorption band was soon detected in the atmospheric transmission spectra around 2982 cm−1, showing a structure resembling an unresolved Q branch and a number of isolated lines with a regular wave number pattern. This absorption could not be matched to any species contained in HITRAN or GEISA databases, but was found very similar to an absorption pattern observed by a US team in the spectrum of solar light reflected by the ground of Mars [Villanueva, G.L., Mumma, M.J., Novak, R.E., Hewagama, T., 2008. Icarus 195 (1), 34-44]. This team then suggested to us that the absorption was due to an uncatalogued transition of the 16O12C18O molecule. The possible existence of this band was soon confirmed from theoretical considerations by Perevalov and Tashkun. Some SOIR observations of the atmospheric transmission are presented around 2982 cm−1, and rough calculations of line strengths of the Q branch are produced, based on the isotopic ratio measured earlier in the lower atmosphere of Venus. This discovery emphasizes the role of isotopologues of CO2 (as well as H2O and HDO) as important greenhouse gases in the atmosphere of Venus.  相似文献

For the first time since 1992 when the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) ceased to operate, there is again a plasma instrument in orbit around Venus, namely the ASPERA-4 flown on Venus Express (inserted into an elliptical polar orbit about the planet on April 11, 2006). In this paper we report on measurements made by the ion and electron sensors of ASPERA-4 during their first five months of operation and, thereby, determine the locations of both the Venus bow shock (BS) and the ion composition boundary (ICB) under solar minimum conditions. In contrast to previous studies based on PVO data, we employ a 3-parameter fit to achieve a realistic shape for the BS. We use a different technique to fit the ICB because this latter boundary cannot be represented by a conic section. Additionally we investigate the dependence of the location of the BS on solar wind ram pressure (based on ASPERA-4 solar wind data) and solar EUV flux (using a proxy from Earth).  相似文献

We report the detection of electrons due to photo-ionization of atomic oxygen and carbon dioxide in the Venus atmosphere by solar helium 30.4 nm photons. The detection was by the Analyzer of Space Plasma and Energetic Atoms (ASPERA-4) Electron Spectrometer (ELS) on the Venus Express (VEx) European Space Agency (ESA) mission. Characteristic peaks in energy for such photoelectrons have been predicted by Venus atmosphere/ionosphere models. The ELS energy resolution (ΔE/E∼7%) means that these are the first detailed measurements of such electrons. Considerations of ion production and transport in the atmosphere of Venus suggest that the observed photoelectron peaks are due primarily to ionization of atomic oxygen.  相似文献

We report vertical thermal structure and wind velocities in the Venusian mesosphere retrieved from carbon monoxide (12CO J=2-1 and 13CO J=2-1) spectral line observations obtained with the Heinrich Hertz Submillimeter Telescope (HHSMT). We observed the mesosphere of Venus from two days after the second Messenger flyby of Venus (on 5 June 2007 at 23:10 UTC) during five days. Day-to-day and day-to-night temperature variations and short-term fluctuations of the mesospheric zonal flow were evident in our data. The extensive layer of warm air detected recently by SPICAV at 90-100 km altitude is also detected in the temperature profiles reported here. These data were part of a coordinated ground-based Venus observational campaign in support of the ESA Venus Express mission. Furthermore, this study attempts to cross-calibrate space- and ground-based observations, to constrain radiative transfer and retrieval algorithms for planetary atmospheres, and to contribute to a more thorough understanding of the global patterns of circulation of the Venusian atmosphere.  相似文献

We present new wind measurements in Venus’ lower mesosphere from visible spectroscopy during the 2007 worldwide coordinated ground campaign in support of ESA's Venus Express mission. These observations consisted of high-resolution spectra of Fraunhofer lines in the entire visible range (0.37-1.05 μm) to measure the winds near 68 km using the Doppler shift of solar radiation scattered by clouds toward the observer's direction. The observations included various points of the dayside hemisphere at a phase angle of ∼109°. We took advantage of two symmetrical elongations in July and September 2007 at Canada-France-Hawaii's 3.6-m telescope. Kinematical fits to the Doppler winds provide a mean equatorial velocity of (104±10) m s−1 for the zonal retrograde flow. This velocity agrees quite well with the mean value obtained by tracking the UV markings from several spacecraft.  相似文献

We present a new method of measuring the Venus winds by Doppler velocimetry on the full visible spectrum of solar light scattered by the clouds. In January 2003, we carried out observations to measure the winds of Venus, using the EMILIE high-resolution, cross-dispersed spectrograph and its associated calibrating instrument the Absolute Astronomical Accelerometer (AAA), at Observatoire de Haute-Provence, France. The motivation of this type of measurements is that it measures the actual velocity of cloud particles, while the other method (track of cloud features) may be sensitive to the deformation of the clouds. During observations, Venus was near maximum western elongation, at a phase angle near 90°. The EMILIE-AAA system allows us to measure accurately the Doppler shift induced in the reflected solar spectrum by the radial component of the motion of the clouds of Venus. We present the measurements and compare them with a forward simulation of a solid super-rotation of the atmosphere of Venus. Taking into account the Doppler shift relative to the Sun and that relative to the Earth, the theoretical total Doppler shift induced in the solar spectra is easily computed as a function of the velocity of the reflecting target. A first forward simulation is computed, with a wind model considering a purely horizontal and zonal wind. The magnitude of the wind is assumed to depend on cos(latitude), as for a solid-body rotation. The comparison with the measurements at various points on the illuminated semi-disc allowed us to determine an equatorial velocity of 66, 75, 91 and 85 m/s on 4 consecutive mornings, consistent with previous ultraviolet cloud tracking wind measurements, showing that wave propagation is not a major factor in the apparent motion of the cloud marks. Further, we discuss the effect of the finite angular size of the Sun and its rapid equatorial rotation (that we call the Young effect). It mainly affects measurements taken near the terminator, where the largest discrepancies are found. These discrepancies are alleviated when the Young effect is taken into account in the model but then the retrieved Venus equatorial velocity is reduced to only 48±3 m/s. This is well below classical ultraviolet markings velocities, but the altitude at which the visible photons are scattered (66 km) that we use is 5 km below the UV markings, confirming the vertical gradient of the horizontal winds shown by previous in-situ measurements.  相似文献

The Venus ground-based image Active Archive is an online database designed to collect ground-based images of Venus in such a way that they are optimally useful for science. The Archive was built to support ESA's Venus Amateur Observing Project, which utilizes the capabilities of advanced amateur astronomers to collect filtered images of Venus in ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared light. These images complement the observations of the Venus Express spacecraft, which cannot continuously monitor the northern hemisphere of the planet due to its elliptical orbit with apocenter above the south pole. We present the first set of observations available in the Archive and assess the useability of the data set for scientific purposes.  相似文献

We have obtained full-disk spatially resolved spectra of the Venus nightside at near-infrared wavelengths during July 2007 using the Anglo-Australian Telescope and Infrared Imager and Spectrograph 2 (IRIS2). The data have been used to map the intensity and rotational temperature of the O2(a1Δg) airglow band at . The temperatures agree with those obtained in earlier IRIS2 observations and are significantly higher than expected from the Venus International Reference Atmosphere (VIRA) profile. We also report the detection of the corresponding ν=0-1O2 airglow band at with a similar spatial distribution to the ν=0-0 band. Observations in the thermal window have been used to image surface topography using two different methods of cloud correction. We have also obtained images that can be used to study cloud motion.  相似文献
