Storage of hydrogen atoms in or on a planetary surface can take place via several different mechanisms. If the hydrogen atom reacts to form a hydroxyl (OH) group or water molecule, an absorption band near 3 μm will be present. Many possible mechanisms for sequestering atomic hydrogen are discussed: internal hydrogen in the form of non-structural OH and H2O in nominally-anhydrous minerals, structural OH in minerals, structural H2O in minerals, H2O in fluid inclusions, and OH and H2O in glasses; bulk H2O as either liquid water or ice; and surficial hydrogen that is either physisorbed as H2O, chemisorbed as an H2O surface complex, or chemically-bound as an OH group on surface terminal sites and grain boundary regions. Understanding the spectroscopic distinctions among these various phenomena is of critical importance in constraining both the evolution of planetary interiors and the cycling of water on planetary surfaces. Proper interpretation of 3-μm bands in reflectance spectra is shown to depend upon the relative contributions from surficial vs. interior hydrogen, which vary with effective surface area (i.e., the grain size and surface roughness) and the volume sampled by the spectrometer.  相似文献

During Cassini’s T44 flyby of Titan (May 28, 2008), the Cassini SAR (synthetic aperture radar) revealed sinuous channels in the Southwest of Xanadu. These channels feature very large radar cross-sections, up to 5 dB, whereas the angle of incidence was relatively high, ∼20°. This backscatter is larger than allowed by the coherent backscatter model considered to explain the unusual reflective and polarization properties of the icy satellites and only a few radar scattering mechanisms can be responsible for such high radar returns. The presence of rounded (icy) pebbles with size larger than the radar wavelength (2.18 cm) is proposed to explain the large radar cross-sections measured in these units. The radar-bright channels are thus interpreted as riverbeds, where debris, likely shaped and transported by fluvial activity, have been deposited. Similar debris were observed in the landing site of the Huygens probe. This work may point the way to an explanation for the enhanced brightness of other fluvial regions of Titan.  相似文献

The Mawrth Vallis region contains an extensive (at least 300 km × 400 km) and thick (?300 m), finely layered (at meter scale), clay-rich unit detected by OMEGA. We use OMEGA, HRSC DTMs derived from stereoscopic imagery, HRSC color imagery and high resolution imagery such as MOC, CTX and HiRISE to characterize the geometry and the composition of the clay-rich unit at the regional scale. Our results show that the clay-bearing unit can be divided into sub-units on the basis of differences in color and composition. In false-color visible imagery, alternating white/bluish and orange/red colored units correspond to a compositional succession of, respectively, Al- and Fe- or Mg-phyllosilicate rich material. Geological cross-sections are presented along the principal outcrops of the region in order to define the stratigraphy of these sub-units. This method shows that the dips of the sub-units are frequently close to the slopes of the present topography, except for scarps visible at the dichotomy boundary, inside impact craters walls, and outcrops inside Mawrth Vallis. In addition to the Al- and Fe- or Mg-phyllosilicate rich sub-units, an altered surface is identified as the lower basement unit. We propose two possible end-member scenarios to explain the derived stratigraphy: (1) alteration of volcaniclastic, aeolian or aqueous layered deposits of various compositions by groundwater, resulting in distinct altered rocks; or (2) Alteration coeval with the deposition of sediments under varying chemical conditions, in wet pedodiagenetic environment.  相似文献

Observations of the Composite InfraRed Spectrometer (CIRS) during the entire nominal Cassini mission (2004-2008) provide us with an accurate global view of composition and temperature in the middle atmosphere of Titan (between 100 and 500 km). We investigated limb spectra acquired at resolution at nine different latitudes between 56°S and 80°N, with a better sampling in the northern hemisphere where molecular abundances and temperature present strong latitudinal variations. From this limb data acquired between February 2005 and May 2008, we retrieved the vertical mixing ratio profiles of C2H2, C2H4, C2H6, C3H8, CH3C2H, C4H2, C6H6, HCN, HC3N and CO2. We present here for the first time, the latitudinal variations of the C2H6, C3H8, CO2, C2H4 and C6H6 vertical mixing ratios profiles. Some molecules, such as C2H6 or C3H8 present little variations above their condensation level. The other molecules (except CO2) show a significant enhancement of their mixing ratios poleward of 50°N. C2H4 is the only molecule whose mixing ratio decreases with height at latitudes below 46°N. Regions depleted in C2H2, HCN and C4H2 are observed around 400 km (0.01 mbar) and 55°N. We also inferred a region enriched in CO2 located between 30 and 40°N in the 2-0.7 mbar pressure range. At 80°N, almost all molecules studied here present a local minimum of their mixing ratio profiles near 300 km (∼0.07 mbar), which is in contradiction with Global Circulation Models that predict constant-with-height vertical profiles due to subsidence at the north pole.  相似文献

This report arises from an ongoing program to monitor Neptune’s largest moon Triton spectroscopically in the 0.8 to 2.4 μm range using IRTF/SpeX. Our objective is to search for changes on Triton’s surface as witnessed by changes in the infrared absorption bands of its surface ices N2,CH4,H2O, CO, and CO2. We have recorded infrared spectra of Triton on 53 nights over the ten apparitions from 2000 to 2009. The data generally confirm our previously reported diurnal spectral variations of the ice absorption bands (Grundy and Young, 2004). Nitrogen ice shows a large amplitude variation, with much stronger absorption on Triton’s Neptune-facing hemisphere. We present evidence for seasonal evolution of Triton’s N2 ice: the 2.15 μm absorption band appears to be diminishing, especially on the Neptune-facing hemisphere. Although it is mostly dissolved in N2 ice, Triton’s CH4 ice shows a very different longitudinal variation from the N2 ice, challenging assumptions of how the two ices behave. Unlike Triton’s CH4 ice, the CO ice does exhibit longitudinal variation very similar to the N2 ice, implying that CO and N2 condense and sublimate together, maintaining a consistent mixing ratio. Absorptions by H2O and CO2 ices show negligible variation as Triton rotates, implying very uniform and/or high latitude spatial distributions for those two non-volatile ices.  相似文献

Vesta, the second largest Main-Belt Asteroid, will be the first to be explored in 2011 by NASA’s Dawn mission. It is a dry, likely differentiated body with spectrum suggesting that is has been resurfaced by basaltic lava flows, not too different from the lunar maria.Here we present the first disk-resolved spectroscopic observations of an asteroid from the ground. We observed (4) Vesta with the ESO-VLT adaptive optics equipped integral-field near-infrared spectrograph SINFONI, as part of its science verification campaign. The highest spatial resolution of ∼90 km on Vesta’s surface was obtained during excellent seeing conditions (0.5) in October 2004.We observe spectral variations across Vesta’ surface that can be interpreted as variations of either the pyroxene composition, or the effect of surface aging. We compare Vesta’s 2 μm absorption band to that of howardite-eucrite-diogenite (HED) meteorites that are thought to originate from Vesta, and establish particular links between specific regions and HED subclasses. The overall composition is found to be mostly compatible with howardite meteorites, although a small area around 180°E longitude could be attributed to a diogenite-rich spot. We finally focus our spectral analysis on the characteristics of Vesta’s bright and dark regions as seen from Hubble Space Telescope’s visible and Keck-II’s near-infrared images.  相似文献

Noisy distance estimates associated with photometric rather than spectroscopic redshifts lead to a biased estimate of the luminosity distribution, and produce a correlated misestimate of the sizes. We consider a sample of early-type galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6 for which both spectroscopic and photometric information is available, and apply the generalization of the V max method to correct for these biases. We show that our technique recovers the true redshift, magnitude and size distributions, as well as the true size–luminosity relation. We find that using only 10 per cent of the spectroscopic information randomly spaced in our catalogue is sufficient for the reconstructions to be accurate within  ∼3 per cent  , when the photometric redshift error is  δ z ≃ 0.038  . We then address the problem of extending our method to deep redshift catalogues, where only photometric information is available. In addition to the specific applications outlined here, our technique impacts a broader range of studies, when at least one distance-dependent quantity is involved. It is particularly relevant for the next generation of surveys, some of which will only have photometric information.  相似文献

We present the first dynamical solution of the triple asteroid system (45) Eugenia and its two moons Petit–Prince (diameter ∼ 7 km) and S/2004 (45) 1 (diameter ∼ 5 km). The two moons orbit at 1165 and 610 km from the primary, describing an almost-circular orbit (e ∼ 6 × 10−3 and e ∼ 7 × 10−2 respectively). The system is quite different from the other known triple systems in the main belt since the inclinations of the moon orbits are sizeable (9° and 18° with respect to the equator of the primary respectively). No resonances, neither secular nor due to Lidov–Kozai mechanism, were detected in our dynamical solution, suggesting that these inclinations are not due to excitation modes between the primary and the moons. A 10-year evolution study shows that the orbits are slightly affected by perturbations from the Sun, and to a lesser extent by mutual interactions between the moons. The estimated J2 of the primary is three times lower than the theoretical one, calculated assuming the shape of the primary and an homogeneous interior, possibly suggesting the importance of other gravitational harmonics.  相似文献

The dynamics of tsunamis can be divided, for convenience, into three parts: tsunami generation, tsunami propagation, and the coastal problems. Out of these three, the problem of tsunami propagation is probably better understood than the other two. One of the main hindrances to the quantitative prediction of tsunami amplitudes at various coastal locations is a lack of detailed knowledge about the deep water signature of a tsunami. Here, the present understanding of this problem is discussed.  相似文献

In 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2011, distinct Oegopsida squid egg masses were observed by scuba divers on the narrow southern KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) shelf in depths of 35–50 m off the coastal resorts of Park Rynie, Pumula and Port Edward, South Africa. In 2006, larvae in the egg balloons were sampled. DNA barcoding (i.e. cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 sequencing) linked the larvae to the genus Lycoteuthis, a group commonly found on the continental slope of the Agulhas Bank and the west coast of South Africa. In all cases, the sightings were concomitant with low water temperatures of 14–18 °C, indicative of shelf edge upwelling. Historical ship-collected CTD data show these cooler waters to originate from a depth of 100–180 m on the KZN continental slope. Complementary satellite imagery revealed the cooler water and discoveries of the egg balloons to be coincident with cold core cyclonic eddies embedded in the shoreward boundary of the Agulhas Current. The temperature data suggest that these egg balloons, in the absence of cyclonic eddy activity, would normally be found in the current on a density surface at a depth of ~130 m where velocities are typically around 100 cm s–1.  相似文献
