Starting from the present version of the Riga dynamo experiment with its rotating magnetic eigenfield dominated by a single frequency we ask for those modifications of this set‐up that would allow for a non‐trivial magnetic field behaviour in the saturation regime. Assuming an increased ratio of azimuthal to axial flow velocity, we obtain energy oscillations with a frequency below the eigenfrequency of the magnetic field. These new oscillations are identified as magneto‐inertial waves that result from a slight imbalance of Lorentz and inertial forces. Increasing the azimuthal velocity further, or increasing the total magnetic Reynolds number, we find transitions to a chaotic behaviour of the dynamo (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Using simulations of helically driven turbulence, it is shown that the ratio of kinetic to magnetic energy dissipation scales with the magnetic Prandtl number in power law fashion with an exponent of approximately 0.6. Over six orders of magnitude in the magnetic Prandtl number the magnetic field is found tobe sustained by large‐scale dynamo action of alphasquared type. This work extends a similar finding for small magnetic Prandtl numbers to the regime of large magnetic Prandtl numbers. At large magnetic Prandtl numbers, most of the energy is dissipated viscously, lowering thus the amount of magnetic energy dissipation, which means that simulations can be performed at magnetic Reynolds numbers that are large compared to the usual limits imposed by a given resolution. This is analogous to an earlier finding that at small magnetic Prandtl numbers, most of the energy is dissipated resistively, lowering the amount of kinetic energy dissipation, so simulations can then be performed at much larger fluid Reynolds numbers than otherwise. This study follows the numerical results presented in Marsenić & Ševčík (2010) that explored the influence of the critical level position on stability of a system. The model was a horizontal fluid layer between z = ±0.5d rotating with an angular velocity Ω = Ω0 ž about the vertical axis z . The fluid was considered to be inviscid, finitely electrically conducting and incompressible and was permeated by a horizontal magnetic field B 0 = ℬ︁0B0(z) , where ℬ︁0 was the magnitude of the field and the function B0(z) = tanh [γ (zz0)]. When γ is large, the field gradient is concentrated near z = z0, the critical level, the field being almost homogeneous elsewhere. In this way it controls the width of the magnetic shear layer associated with the current sheet. It was found that at conditions when the magnetic field gradient was large enough (γ = O (10)) and the critical level was placed close enough to the (bottom) perfectly conducting boundary (z0 < –0.388d for γ = 80), magnetically driven convection appeared localized to a close neighbourhood of the critical level – the so called critical layer. Based on the circumstances of its rise and its properties it was identified with the resistive tearing‐mode instability. This paper presents an analytical treatment of the problem assuming γ ≥ 1. The approach consists in separation of the computational domain into an outer region where the diffusionless limit (Elsasser number Λ → ∞) applies and an inner region (the critical layer) of finite conductivity. According to the tearing‐mode theory in classical systems, the solution in the inner region is sought as long‐wavelength with respect to the width of the critical layer. The obtained solution shows features similar to the one obtained numerically and confirmed relevance of the simplifying physical assumptions made in each region. The convection in the critical layer is strictly conditioned by a sharp magnetic shear. If the shear region is removed by further positioning of the critical level towards the perfectly conducting boundary, the localized convection disappears. It is in compliance with the fact that the system is stabilised by a perfectly conducting boundary with respect to the tearing mode. Stability is then checked numerically in the layer bounded by perfectly conducting boundaries where the critical point of the magnetic field lies on one of them. The existence of a magnetically driven instability is confirmed. The nonlocal alpha‐effect of Babcock‐Leighton type is not prone to the catastrophic quenching due to conservation of magnetic helicity. This is shown with a dynamo model, which jointly applies the nonlocal alpha‐effect, the diamagnetic pumping, and dynamical equation for the magnetic alpha‐effect. The same model shows catastrophic quenching when the alpha‐effect is changed to its local formulation. The nonlocal model shows a preferred excitation of magnetic fields of dipolar symmetry, which oscillate with a period of about ten years and have a toroidal‐to‐polar fields ratio of about a thousand (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The instability of a supercritical Taylor‐Couette flow of a conducting fluid with resting outer cylinder under the influence of a uniform axial electric current is investigated for magnetic Prandtl number Pm = 1. In the linear theory the critical Reynolds number for axisymmetric perturbations is not influenced by the current‐induced axisymmetric magnetic field but all axisymmetric magnetic perturbations decay. The nonaxisymmetric perturbations with m = 1 are excited even without rotation for large enough Hartmann numbers (“Tayler instability”). For slow rotation their growth rates scale with the Alfvén frequency of the magnetic field but for fast rotation they scale with the rotation rate of the inner cylinder. In the nonlinear regime the ratio of the energy of the magnetic m = 1 modes and the toroidal background field is very low for the non‐rotating Tayler instability but it strongly grows if differential rotation is present. For super‐Alfv´enic rotation the energies in the m = 1 modes of flow and field do not depend on the molecular viscosity, they are almost in equipartition and contain only 1.5 % of the centrifugal energy of the inner cylinder. The geometry of the excited magnetic field pattern is strictly nonaxisymmetric for slow rotation but it is of the mixed‐mode type for fast rotation – contrary to the situation which has been observed at the surface of Ap stars. Catastrophe of coronal magnetic rope embedded in a partly open multipolar background magnetic field is studied by using a 2-dimensional, 3-component ideal MHD model in spherical coordinates. The background field is composed of three closed bipolar fields of a coronal streamer and an open field with an equatorial current sheet. The magnetic rope lies below the central bipolar field, and it is characterized by its annular and axial magnetic fluxes. For a given annual flux, there is a critical value of the axial flux, and for a given axial flux, there is a critical value of annual flux such that, below the critical value, the magnetic rope is attached to the solar surface and the system stays in equilibrium, but when the critical value is exceeded, the magnetic rope breaks free and erupts upward. This implies that catastrophe can occur in a coronal magnetic rope embedded in a partly open multipolar background magnetic field. Our computation gives a threshold value of magnetic energy that is about 15% greater than the energy of the partly open magnetic field (the central bipolar field open and the fields on either side closed). The excess energy may serve as source for solar explosions such as coronal mass ejections.  相似文献

Starting from Bernstein's principle of magnetohydrodynamic energy, a general analysis is presented for the stability of a kind of 1-D force-free magnetic fields with singular current density surfaces and a single parameter in cylindrical coordinates. It is found that in the parameter space of this kind of force-free magnetic fields there simultaneously exist stable and unstable regions. Their stability is solely determined by the radial distribution of the magnetic pitch in the neighborhood of the cylinder axis, and is independent of the presence of singular current density surface at the boundary of the field.  相似文献

为满足城市地质大调查复杂地层钻进的需要,研制了JDD-100型全液压钻机高频振动回转顶驱。该顶驱具有回转钻进、高频振动钻进、高频振动回转钻进功能。对顶驱的回转机构和振动机构进行了全面系统的设计,运用ADAMS动力学仿真分析软件对高频振动回转顶驱的工作过程进行了动态仿真分析。试验表明,该装置结构设计合理,钻进效率高,工作寿命长,满足了城市地质大调查复杂地层高效钻进的要求。  相似文献

从旋转椭球粒子散射理论出发,给出单个小旋转椭球雨滴在入射不同偏振波时的散射函数,并对其在不同仰角情况的数学图形和物理意义做了讨论,为推导基于椭球雨滴群的双基地偏振雷达方程、研究椭球雨滴群对双基地线偏振雷达探测能力的影响、处理和分析双基地偏振雷达资料,提供了理论依据.  相似文献
