This short paper presents a case study for teaching elements of Quaternary Science to a non-specialist audience. A guided hands-on practical exercise in sedimentology and stratigraphy, palaeoenvironmental analysis and Palaeolithic archaeology was supported by the development of a ‘Quaternary Timeline’ chart, which introduces the concepts of changing climates and environments and characterises the broad expression of these changes in the terrestrial and fossil records. Using information from the practical exercises, the figure allows a step-by-step interpretation to be built up of past landscapes, including an understanding of the nature of fluvial responses to Quaternary climate change, a reconstruction of the contemporary flora and mammalian fauna and an analysis of the activities of early human populations. 相似文献

Using data on the entire population in combination with data on almost all individuals in Sweden listed as inventors, we study how the probability of being listed on a patent as inventor is influenced by the density of other future inventors residing in the same region. In this process, we control for demographic and sector effects along with the educational characteristics of parents. This approach allows us to trace how location history influences individuals’ inventive capacity. We focus on three types of influences: (a) future inventors in the municipality around the time of birth, (b) future inventors around the time of graduation from high school and (c) future inventors at graduation from higher education. We find suggestive evidence that co-locating with future inventors may impact the probability of becoming an inventor. The most consistent effect is found for place of higher education; some positive effects are also evident from birthplace, whereas no consistent positive effect can be derived from individuals’ high school location. Therefore, the formative influences mainly deriving from family upbringing, birth region and from local milieu effects arising from a conscious choice to attend a higher education affect the choice of becoming an inventor. 相似文献

Marine planning presents considerable new challenges and opportunities for those responsible for managing the marine environment. In the UK, the Marine and Coastal Access Act (2009) provides a statutory framework for marine planning and has created a new administration responsible for its implementation. If marine planning is to be effective and achieve its stated goals it will require a pool of trained individuals who will be responsible for or will participate in marine planning. Based on data gathered during the development and delivery of an intensive professional course and a masters level programme, this paper explores the key elements of education and training required by marine planners. These include a knowledge of planning processes and national and international laws and conventions; an understanding of how marine plans can integrate with existing terrestrial and coastal plans and other management requirements; and an understanding of the marine and maritime environment, including the human activities and natural features. It concludes with a discussion of the different roles individuals may play in the planning process and thus their different training needs. 相似文献

Abstract: In teaching and learning geography and global education in Australia, understanding a range of perspectives is important because content and practice are inextricably linked. Currently both geography and global education promote a 'perspectives' curricula approach requiring effective implementation of a range of perspectives theories such as positivism, multiculturalism, deep environmentalism, feminism and globalism. This paper outlines the philosophical basis of perspectivism, discusses some of the major perspectives theories and their backgrounds, and describes how they are applied in teaching geography and global education with particular reference to the Australian (principally New South Wales) and New Zealand curricula. The educational reforms that are at the heart of the British Government’s plans for its second term include an explicit call for more faith-based schools. This paper examines Jewish day schools as examples of these. It considers attempts by community leaders to defend Jewish identities and promote religious ways of life through the construction and maintenance of socio-spatial educational boundaries.
