The Camamu Bay (CMB) is located on the narrowest shelf along the South American coastline and close to the formation of two major Western Boundary Currents (WBC), the Brazil/North Brazil Current (BC/NBC). These WBC flow close to the shelf break/slope region and are expected to interact with the shelf currents due to the narrowness of the shelf. The shelf circulation is investigated in terms of current variability based on an original data set covering the 2002-2003 austral summer and the 2003 austral autumn. The Results show that the currents at the shelf are mainly wind driven, experiencing a complete reversal between seasons due to a similar change in the wind field. Currents at the inner-shelf have a polarized nature, with the alongshore velocity mostly driven by forcings at the sub-inertial frequency band and the cross-shore velocity mainly supra-inertially forced, with the tidal currents playing an important role at this direction. The contribution of the forcing mechanisms at the mid-shelf changes between seasons. During the summer, forcings in the two frequency bands are important to drive the currents with a similar contribution of the tidal currents. On the other hand, during the autumn season, the alongshore velocity is mostly driven by sub-inertial forcings and tidally driven currents still remain important in both directions. Moreover, during the autumn when the stratification is weaker, the response of the shelf currents to the wind forcing presents a barotropic signature. The meso-scale processes related to the WBC flowing at the shelf/slope region also affect the circulation within the shelf, which contribute to cause significant current reversals during the autumn season. Currents at the shelf-estuary connection are clearly supra-inertially forced with the tidal currents playing a key role in the generation of the along-channel velocities. The sub-inertial forcings at this location act mainly to drive the weak ebb currents which were highly correlated with both local and remote wind forcing during the summer season.  相似文献

Data‐driven techniques based on machine learning algorithms are becoming popular in hydrological modelling, in particular for forecasting. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are often the first choice. The so‐called instance‐based learning (IBL) has received relatively little attention, and the present paper explores the applicability of these methods in the field of hydrological forecasting. Their performance is compared with that of ANNs, M5 model trees and conceptual hydrological models. Four short‐term flow forecasting problems were solved for two catchments. Results showed that the IBL methods often produce better results than ANNs and M5 model trees, especially if used with the Gaussian kernel function. A finite element model for pile‐driving analysis is developed and used to investigate the behaviour of pre‐bored piles, which are then driven the last 1.25 or 2.25 m to their final design depth. The study was conducted for the case of saturated clays. The model traces the penetration of the pile into the soil and accommodates for large deformations. The non‐linear behaviour of the clay in this study is predicted using the bounding‐surface‐plasticity model, as applied to isotropic cohesive soils. The details of the 3‐D numerical modelling and computational schemes are presented. A significant difference was observed in the pile displacement during driving, and in the computed soil resistance at the pile tip, particularly at the earliest driving stages. No difference in soil resistance at the soil pile interface along the pile shaft was detected between the pre‐bored piles whether driven 1.25 or 2.25 m. We performed an experiment using high-energy protons to characterize in situ the spatial and temporal evolution of a laser-driven shock propagating through a low-Z material. Radiography of the shock propagating through the low-Z transparent material (Lexan, quartz, diamond) enabled estimation of density under compression. In order to discriminate the influence of the shocked matter on the protons trajectory, a Monte-Carlo simulation was developed. This code describes the protons trajectory through the matter, calculating the scattering angle and the loss of energy.  相似文献

Submarine leveed channels are sculpted by turbidity currents that are commonly highly stratified. Both the concentration and the grain size decrease upward in the flow, and this is a fundamental factor that affects the location and grain size of deposits around a channel. This study presents laboratory experiments that link the morphological evolution of a progressively developing leveed channel to the suspended sediment structure of the turbidity currents. Previously, it was difficult to link turbidity current structure to channel–levee development because observations from natural systems were limited to the depositional products while experiments did not show realistic morphodynamics due to scaling issues related to the sediment transport. This study uses a novel experimental approach to overcome scaling issues, which results in channel inception and evolution on an initially featureless slope. Depth of the channel increased continuously as a result of levee aggradation combined with varying rates of channel floor aggradation and degradation. The resulting levees are fining upward and the grain‐size trend in the levee matches the upward decrease in grain size in the flow. It is shown that such deposit trends can result from internal channel dynamics and do not have to reflect upstream forcing. The suspended sediment structure can also be linked to the lateral transition from sediment bypass in the channel thalweg to sediment deposition on the levees. The transition occurs because the sediment concentration is below the flow capacity in the channel thalweg, while higher up on the channel walls the concentration exceeds capacity resulting in deposition of the inner levee. Thus, a framework is provided to predict the growth pattern and facies of a levee from the suspended sediment structure in a turbidity current.  相似文献

Abstract

Despite their close proximity and similar dimensions (~ 200m deep × 10km long × 2km wide) the two eastern basins of Lake Lucerne, Gersauersee and Urnersee, exhibit considerable differences in their internal behaviour, particularly during late winter and spring. The two lakes are separated by a small intermediate basin (~ 120m deep × 4km long × 1km wide) with sills of approximately 90m depth at each end. We report results of a field program conducted over the period February—May, 1988, when observations were obtained from weekly CTD transects and from three thermistor string/current meter moorings deployed for two months, one near each sill and the third at the southern end of Urnersee near Fluelen. During the observation period the stratification, relative surface to bottom density difference, Δρ/ρ, was 12 × 10?6 in Gersauersee and 4 × 10?6 in Urnersee. Following wind events a large amplitude internal seiche in Gersauersee (vertical excursions of ~50m and period ~60 hours) effectively pumped the heavier Gersauersee bottom water onto the intermediate basin and eventually into the hypolimnion of Urnersee. Temperature spectra show a peak at this seiche frequency at all levels at the Gersauer sill but only near the bottom at the sill in Urnersee. Coherence estimates between the bottom temperatures at Gersauer sill and Fluelen showed a significant peak at period 60 hours suggesting transmission of energy from the Gersauersee seiching motion through the weaker stratification of Urnersee to Fluelen. The phase relationships indicate that the wave phase speed decreases as the wave propagates into the region of weaker stratification. Application of a simple two-layer Defant model which includes topographic variations confirms these observations. The estimated volume exchange due to seiche pumping is only a small fraction of the Urnersee hypolimnion. However, the dissipation of energy transferred from the Gersauersee seiche may be an important contribution to mixing in the deeper waters of Urnersee.  相似文献

The effect of a residual current on the combined tidal and wind driven flow and the resulting bedload sediment transport in the ocean has been investigated, using a simple one dimensional two-equation turbulence closure model. Predictions of the combined tidal and wind driven flow with given residual currents are presented, showing that the residual current has a substantial effect on both the depth averaged mass transport and the mean bedload transport directions; in some cases the effect of the residual current is to almost reverse the mean bedload transport direction. The residual current affects the rotation of the flow due to the Coriolis effect in the lower part of the water column (the near-surface flow is wind dominated), causing a larger or smaller clockwise rotation of the depth averaged mass transport, depending on the direction of the residual current.  相似文献

Variations in the size and shape of Myxidium zealandicum spores were not related to cyst size or host size, but variation was apparent between host species and individual fish. Spores from Anguilla australis were larger (7.9–15.3 μm long) and more uniform in shape than the small (6.1–11.7 μm long) inegularly shaped spores from A. dieffenbachii. Spore size was also consistent between cysts in individual A. australis, but variable between cysts in A. dieffenbachii. Abnormal spores were rare in A. australis, but more common and associated with small arcuate spores in A. dieffenbachii.

It is proposed that size and shape are genetically determined but may be highly modified by the biochemistry/physiology of the host at the site of sporogony. A. australis is a more suitable host for M. zealandicum than A. dieffenbachii, and constancy in spore size between cysts in A. australis was attributed to plasmotomy prior to sporogony. Spore valve striation numbers are genetically determined and variable, but no trends in variation were discernable. Cyst shape may be of taxonomic use within a host species, but not between host species.  相似文献
