We study the star formation history of normal spirals by using a large and homogeneous data sample of local galaxies. For our analysis we utilize detailed models of chemical and spectrophotometric galactic evolution, calibrated on the Milky Way disc. We find that star formation efficiency is independent of galactic mass, while massive discs have, on average, lower gas fractions and are redder than their low-mass counterparts; put together, these findings convincingly suggest that massive spirals are older than low-mass ones. We evaluate the effective ages of the galaxies of our sample and we find that massive spirals must be several Gyr older than low-mass ones. We also show that these galaxies (having rotational velocities in the 80–400 km s−1 range) cannot have suffered extensive mass losses, i.e. they cannot have lost during their lifetime an amount of mass much larger than their current content of gas+stars. 相似文献

In this article we present a method for the automated prediction of stellar atmospheric parameters from spectral indices.
This method uses a genetic algorithm (GA) for the selection of relevant spectral indices and prototypical stars and predicts
their properties, using the k-nearest neighbors method (KNN). We have applied the method to predict the effective temperature,
surface gravity, metallicity, luminosity class and spectral class of stars from spectral indices. Our experimental results
show that the feature selection performed by the genetic algorithm reduces the running time of KNN up to 92%, and the predictive
accuracy error up to 35%.

We use high-quality optical rotation curves of nine low-luminosity disc galaxies to obtain the velocity profiles of the surrounding dark matter haloes. We find that they increase linearly with radius at least out to the edge of the stellar disc, implying that, over the entire stellar region, the density of the dark halo is about constant.
The properties of the mass structure of these haloes are similar to those found for a number of dwarf and low surface brightness galaxies, but provide a more substantial evidence of the discrepancy between the halo mass distribution predicted in the cold dark matter scenario and those actually detected around galaxies. We find that the density law proposed by Burkert reproduces the halo rotation curves, with halo central densities ( ρ0 ∼1–4×10−24 g cm−3 ) and core radii ( r 0 ∼5–15 kpc) scaling as ρ 0 ∝ r 0 −2/3 . 相似文献
