We present a mineralogical assessment of 12 Maria family asteroids, using near-infrared spectral data obtained over the years 2000-2009 combined with visible spectral data (when available) to cover the spectral interval of 0.4-2.5 μm. Our analysis indicates the Maria asteroid family, which is located adjacent to the chaotic region of the 3:1 Kirkwood Gap, appears to be a true genetic family composed of assemblages analogous to mesosiderite-type meteorites. Dynamical models by Farinella et al. (Farinella, P., Gunczi, R., Froeschlé, Ch., Froeschlé, C., [1993]. Icarus 101, 174-187) predict this region should supply meteoroids into Earth-crossing orbits. Thus, the Maria family is a plausible source of some or all of the mesosiderites in our meteorite collections. These individual asteroids were most likely once part of a larger parent object that was broken apart and dispersed. One of the Maria dynamical family members investigated, ((695) Bella), was found to be unrelated to the genetic Maria family members. The parameters of (695) Bella indicate an H-chondrite assemblage, and that Bella may be a sister or daughter of Asteroid (6) Hebe. 相似文献

Using model studies, the total gradient (TG) of the Z-component magnetic field is shown to be a useful quantity for delineating sources of satellite-altitude magnetic anomalies; this field is used to constrain the location and lateral boundaries of sources of high amplitude magnetic anomalies of southern highlands of Mars. The TG field suggests two parallel linear and oppositely magnetized sources of 1000 and 1800 km length separated by 1000 km of region of intervening non-parallel sources. The simplest interpretation of the long, linear features is that they are zones of multitudinous crustal scale dikes formed in separate episodes of rifting, and not features associated with the mechanism of seafloor spreading. Forward modeling with uniformly magnetized sources suggests that magnetizations of the order of 10-50 A/m (40 km thickness) over ∼100 km width in the case of the southern source and of 12.5-27.5 A/m (40 km thickness) and ∼200 km width for the northern source are necessary to explain the Z-component amplitudes and features of the TG field. If the crustal magnetization on Mars were to be distributed fractally as on Earth, magnetizations matching the largest amplitude features on Mars may be spatially correlated from a 50-100 km distance range (β ∼ 3) to approaching nearly uniform magnetization (β ∼ 5) values. To keep magnetization intensity as small as possible, the higher end of β values are preferred, whereas, small amplitude anomaly features could be generated from sources with β ∼ 3. High quality VNIR spectra of 15 Vestoids, small asteroids that are believed to originate from Vesta, were collected and compared to laboratory spectra and compositional data for selected HED meteorites. A combination of spectral parameters such as band centers, and factors derived from Modified Gaussian Model fits (band centers, band strengths, calculation of the low to high-Ca pyroxene ratio) were used to establish if each Vestoid appeared most like eucrite or diogenite material, or a mixture of the two (howardite). This resulted in the identification of the first asteroid with a ferroan diogenite composition, 2511 Patterson. This asteroid can be used to constrain the size of diogenite magma chambers within the crust of Vesta. The Vestoids indicate that both large-scale homogeneous units (>5 km) and smaller-scale heterogeneity (<1 km) exist on the surface of Vesta, as both monomineralogic (eucrite or diogenite material alone) and mixed (both eucrite and diogenite) spectra are observed. The small-scale of the variation observed within the Vestoid population is predicted by the partial melting model, which has multiple intrusions penetrating into the crust of Vesta. It is much more difficult to reconcile the observations here with the magma ocean model, which would predict much more homogeneous layers on a large-scale both at the surface and with depth. 相似文献

The full set of high-resolution observations from the Galileo Ultraviolet Spectrometer (UVS) is analyzed to look for spectral trends across the surface of Europa. We provide the first disk-resolved map of the 280 nm SO2 absorption feature and investigate its relationship with sulfur and electron flux distributions as well as with surface features and relative surface ages. Our results have implications for exogenic and endogenic sources. The large-scale pattern in SO2 absorption band depth is again shown to be similar to the pattern of sulfur ion implantation, but with strong variations in band depth based on terrain. In particular, the young chaos units show stronger SO2 absorption bands than expected from the average pattern of sulfur ion flux, suggesting a local source of SO2 in those regions, or diapiric heating that leads to a sulfur-rich lag deposit.While the SO2 absorption feature is confined to the trailing hemisphere, the near UV albedo (300-310 nm) has a global pattern with a minimum at the center of the trailing hemisphere and a maximum at the center of the leading hemisphere. The global nature of the albedo pattern is suggestive of an exogenic source, and several possibilities are discussed. Like the SO2 absorption, the near UV albedo also has local variations that depend on terrain type and age. 相似文献

In this paper we make an effort to understand the interaction of turbulence generated by the magnetorotational instability (MRI) with turbulence from other sources, such as supernova explosions (SNe) in galactic disks. First we perform a linear stability analysis (LSA) of non‐ideal MRI to derive the limiting value of Ohmic diffusion that is needed to inhibit the growth of the instability for different types of rotation laws. With the help of a simple analytical expression derived under first‐order smoothing approximation (FOSA), an estimate of the limiting turbulence level and hence the turbulent diffusion needed to damp the MRI is derived. Secondly, we perform numerical simulations in local cubes of isothermal nonstratified gas with external forcing of varying strength to see whether the linear result holds for more complex systems. Purely hydrodynamic calculations with forcing, rotation and shear are made for reference purposes, and as expected, non‐zero Reynolds stresses are found. In the magnetohydrodynamic calculations, therefore, the total stresses generated are a sum of the forcing and MRI contributions. To separate these contributions, we perform reference runs with MRI‐stable shear profiles (angular velocity increasing outwards), which suggest that the MRI‐generated stresses indeed become strongly suppressed as function of the forcing. The Maxwell to Reynolds stress ratio is observed to decrease by an order of magnitude as the turbulence level due to external forcing exceeds the predicted limiting value, which we interpret as a sign of MRI suppression. Finally, we apply these results to estimate the limiting radius inside of which the SN activity can suppress the MRI, arriving at a value of 14 kpc (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Long term behaviours of a few selected X‐ray binaries are studied on the basis of RXTE/ASM archive covering a period of ∼13 years of continuous X‐ray data. Two new superorbital periods seem to be revealed for the GX354‐0 and X Persei systems as 8.7 years and 345 days, respectively. Although the X Persei system has two strongest peaks in its power density spectrum at 15.7 years and at 345 days, the latter is much more plausible. This investigation presents a new analysis of the spatial distribution of the bright early‐type stars in the field of Northern Monoceros. A database of all O–B9 stars with available uvbyβ photometry is collated and a homogeneous distance scale is established for the clusters and layers of field stars. We provide revised distances for NGC 2264 and NGC 2244 of 833±38 (s.e.) pc and 1585±60 (s.e.) pc, respectively. We present arguments that there might be substructures in the clusters projected along the line of sight. According to the present sample the classical Mon OB2 association at 1.6 kpc is represented by a relatively compact group at 1.26 kpc in the vicinity of NGC 2244 and a layer of massive stars located between 1.5 and 3 kpc (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The origin of large scale magnetic fields in astrophysical rotators, and the conversion of gravitational energy into radiation near stars and compact objects via accretion have been subjects of active research for a half century. Magnetohydrodynamic turbulence makes both problems highly nonlinear, so both subjects have benefitted from numerical simulations.However, understanding the key principles and practical modeling of observations warrants testable semi‐analytic mean field theories that distill the essential physics. Mean field dynamo (MFD) theory and alpha‐viscosity accretion disc theory exemplify this pursuit. That the latter is a mean field theory is not always made explicit but the combination of turbulence and global symmetry imply such. The more commonly explicit presentation of assumptions in 20th century textbook MFDT has exposed it to arguably more widespread criticism than incurred by 20th century alpha‐accretion theory despite complementary weaknesses. In the 21st century however, MFDT has experienced a breakthrough with a dynamical saturation theory that consistently agrees with simulations. Such has not yet occurred in accretion disc theory, though progress is emerging. Ironically however, for accretion engines, MFDT and accretion theory are presently two artificially uncoupled pieces of what should be a single coupled theory. Large scale fields and accretion flows are dynamically intertwined because large scale fields likely play a key role in angular momentum transport. The workshop “Supersoft X‐ray Sources – New Developments” brought together observers and theoretician to discuss the present status and unsolved problems of supersoft source research. A large part of the workshop was devoted to optical novae and their supersoft state. Large samples of supersoft X‐ray sources were presented from nearby galaxies, as well as extensive monitoring campaigns ofbright individual sources.
