Two cruises were conducted in January and July 1986 in the Changjiang (Yangtse River) Estuary and its adjacent East China Sea (30°45′ -32°00′N,121°00′-124°00′E). Direct epifluorescence counts of planktonic bacteria and determinations of ATP concentrations were made. Subsamples were taken for measurement of oxygen consumption rates and chlorophyll concentrations.Bacteria and ATP concentrations were higher in summer than in winter, highest in the river and the river mouth, and gradually lower offshore. The bacteria number was correlated positively with suspended matter, nitrates and oxygen consumption rates, and negatively with salinity.In winter bacteria were the main contributors of ATP and the main consumers of dissolved oxygen in the whole studied area. In summer two maxima of ATP were found along the salinity gradient. The first one which coincided with the peak of turbidity near the river mouth was attributed to bacte -ria, and the second which occurred in the waters with a salinity range be  相似文献

The chemical conversion of emitted SO2 and SO3 to gaseous H2SO4 in nascent aircraft exhaust plumes and subsequent adsorption of the fully oxidized sulfur species on the surfaces of emitted combustion aerosols (soot) is investigated. Results are presented for the mass fractions of SO3 and H2SO4 acquired per soot particle early in the plume, suggesting that sulfur-induced activation is an efficient pathway to increase the ability of exhaust soot emitted at altitude to host heterogeneous chemical reactions and to trigger the formation of cirrus clouds.  相似文献

Lake Fidler is an ectogenic meromictic lake with a monimolimnion maintained by periodic incursions of brackish water from the lower Gordon River estuary. A dam across the middle reaches of the Gordon River has restricted these incursions of brackish water and meromictic stability has rapidly declined. A palaeolimnological study was carried in order to assess the historical development of meromixis and the impact of the dam on the microbiological communities in the lake. Fossil pigments in a 17 m sediment core were analysed using reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (rp-HPLC) and mass spectrometry (MS). In addition, taphonomic studies of pigment production, deposition and degradation in the water column and surface sediments were used to identify planktonic and benthic pigment degradation processes and constrain the stratigraphic interpretation. Results comparing the pigment composition of pelagic sediment traps and littoral surface sediments indicated that the core from the centre of the lake would permit a historical reconstruction of planktonic bacterial and algal communities. Marked increases in prokaryotic pigments ca 3500 yr B.P. suggested the possible colonisation of a chemocline by phototrophic bacteria. Further changes in chlorophyll: carotenoid ratios and changes in relative abundances of both chlorophyll a and bacteriochlorophyll c derivatives also indicated that a change in the depositional environment had occurred; possibly due to altered stratification or anoxia. From this we infer the onset of either intermittent or permanent meromixis. Further increases in prokaryotic pigment abundance suggested that the present state of permanent meromixis was firmly established by 2070 ±50 14C yr B.P., and diatom analysis confirmed the development of a stable mixolimnion. High resolution studies of the top 10 cm of sediments measured pigments in mean concentrations of 15.1 ng g-1 with a mean S.D. of only 2.78 indicating little change in pigment abundance since the construction of the dam. Thus, Lake Fidler still retains most of the features of meromixis. However, evidence from nearby Lake Morrison and Sulphide Pool has shown that any further declines in meromictic stability will cause a rapid reversion to holomixis. Palaeolimnological evidence from the early stages of meromictic development of Lake Fidler suggests that such reversion to holomixis may not permanently eliminate all the microbiological communities, and that, given time, they may return and prosper with re-establishment of a suitable chemocline. These studies will guide recommendations for a management strategy to prevent the further decay of meromixis in the Gordon River lakes.  相似文献

The sulfur content in basaltic melts coexisting with eithersulfide or sulfate melts was determined experimentally. Theexperimental conditions were in the range of 1300–1355°Cand 1·0–1·6 GPa, conditions appropriatefor the melting of the upper mantle above subduction zones.Under these conditions, both sulfide and sulfate were presentas immiscible liquids, as inferred from the round geometriesof the quenched sulfide and sulfate phases. The measured S contentin basaltic melts saturated with sulfate liquids ([S] = 1·5± 0·2 wt %) was 10 times higher than the S contentin basaltic melts saturated with sulfide liquids ([S] = 0·14± 0·02 wt %). In our experiments, sulfate liquidswere stable at fO2 as low as FMQ = +1·85 [FMQ = log (fO2)sample– log (fO2)FMQ, where FMQ is the fayalite–magnetite–quartzoxygen buffer], and evidence from other sources indicates thatsulfates will be stable at lower fO2 in melts with lower activitiesof silica. Because chalcophile and highly siderophile elements,such as Cu, Ni, Au, and Pd, are partitioned preferentially intosulfide phases, melting of sufficiently oxidized sources, inwhich sulfides are not stable, would favor incorporation ofthese elements into the silicate melt produced. Such melts wouldhave a higher potential to generate ore deposits. This studyshows that the high sulfur contents of such oxidized basaltsalso means that relatively small amounts of such magmas canprovide significant amounts of sulfur to exsolving volatilephases and account for the bulk of the sulfur expelled in somevolcanic eruptions, such the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo. The effect of UV-visible light and natural sunlight on the Fe(III)-catalyzed oxidation of dissolved sulfur dioxide has been studied under the conditions representative for those of acidified atmospheric liquids. The experimental results have shown that both sunlight and UV-visible light enhance the rate of Fe(III)-catalyzed oxidation of aqueous sulfite with wavelength ranging from 300 to 575 nm. The light enhanced oxidation is mainly due to photochemical formation of OH radicals from Fe(OH)2+ complexes in the wavelength region below 420 nm and SO3•− free radicals from Fe(III) sulfite complexes above 420 nm in the absence of organic ligands. Like the Fe(III)-catalyzed thermal chemical oxidation, the Fe(III)-catalyzed photochemical oxidation is also first order with respect to sulfite ion concentration. The sunlight irradiation can increase the Fe(III)-catalyzed oxidation of S(IV) over 45%. The presence of organic complex ligands, such as oxalate, can completely inhibit the Fe-catalyzed oxidation of S(IV) in the dark. However, the photolysis of Fe(III)-oxalato complexes generates oxalate free radicals, leading to the formation of H2O2 and OH radicals and the oxidation of S(IV). The rate of Fe(III)-catalyzed oxidation of S(IV) species is found to increase with increasing light intensity. The effects of sunlight on the Fe(III)-catalyzed oxidation of S(IV) should be taken into account when predicting the daytime rates of sulfuric acid formation in atmospheric water droplets.  相似文献

Signature pigments of photosynthetic green sulfur bacteria (GSB) were found in ancient sediments collected from an abandoned clay quarry located in the Banyoles lacustrine area (Spain). The sediments belong to the Interglacial Waalian of the lower Pleistocene (0.7–1.5 millions years old) and were deposited after a marshy event occurring during that geologic period. Reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) analyses of acetone:methanol sediment extracts revealed that the main pigments found were carotenoids of both eukaryotic and prokaryotic photosynthetic organisms. In particular, isorenieratene (Isr) and β-isorenieratene (β-Isr) constituted the larger bacterial fraction (35–40% of the total carotenoid content), whereas okenone, a signature pigment of purple sulfur bacteria, accounted for less than 2%. Xanthophylls from oxygenic photosynthetic organisms accounted for the remaining carotenoids. Likewise, traces of degradation products of both bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) and chlorophyll (Chl) were also detected. The low concentration of Chl degradation products made proper identification of these compounds impossible. In contrast, degradation products of BChl-e such as bacteriochlorophyllide-e and bacteriopheophorbide-e were identified in the HPLC analyses, suggesting that chemical degradation of naturally occurring BChl aggregates of GSB was slower in the clay quarry sediments. The presence of signature pigments of brown-colored species of GSB (Isr, β-Isr and degradation products of BChl-e) in the sediments suggests an ancient aquatic environment where GSB were present and where episodes of sulfide-rich anoxia reaching the photic zone could be envisaged. Similarly, the large percentage of algal xanthophylls supports that algae could be an important part of the microbial photosynthetic community in this ancient ecosystem.  相似文献

We carried out, in September, a 24 h experiment to determine the potential reactivity of bacterial communities found in the sea water in Arcachon Basin (France). To create eutrophic systems, batches of seawater were enriched with 30 mgl?1 of either ammonium chloride or amino acids. Samples were taken every 3 h. Quantitative measurements were made of direct counts (AODC), biomass and ATP content. The heterotrophic bacterial communities were defined in terms of their catabolic potentialities and ‘specific’ diversity. Bacterial heterotrophic activity was established by measuring heterotrophic uptake and the mineralization percentage of labelled glucose or amino acids. From these data, ratios of AMP/ATP and P/B were calculated where P is the uptake of labelled substrate and B is the biomass.After the nitrogen enrichment an increase of the respiration was seen at first. After 6 h, a biomass peak appeared associated with a continuous increase in the number of cells. Bacterial growth was concurrent with a qualitative modification of the community: UAI increased, and diversity dropped. A less diversified community resulted suggesting an immature ecological state (zymogenous bacterial). Low values of respiration percentage (20%) characterized high growth yields.  相似文献
