A detailed field study was carried out on a tidal bore to document the turbulent processes and sediment entrainment which occurred. The measured bore, within the Arcins Channel of the Garonne River (France), was undular in nature and was followed by well‐defined secondary wave motion. Due to the local river geometry a collision between the Arcins channel tidal bore and the bore which formed within the main Garonne River channel was observed about 800 m upstream of the sampling site. This bore collision generated a transient standing wave with a black water mixing zone. Following this collision the bore from the main Garonne River channel propagated ‘backward’ to the downstream end of the Arcins channel. Velocity measurements with a fine temporal resolution were complemented by measurements of the sediment concentration and river level. The instantaneous velocity data indicated large and rapid fluctuations of all velocity components during the tidal bore. Large Reynolds shear stresses were observed during and after the tidal bore passage, including during the 'backward' bore propagation. Large suspended sediment concentration estimates were recorded and the suspended sediment flux data showed some substantial sediment motion, consistent with the murky appearance of the flood tide waters. 疏勒河是中国河西走廊3大内陆河水系之一,近100 a受气候变化及人类活动的影响显著。采用实地考察和社会问卷调查的方法,评价当地适应气候变化的能力,进而提出对当地社会经济发展具有建设性的适应对策。研究表明,疏勒河流域适应气候变化的能力较低,主要表现在:气候变化明显,河流水量减少;疏勒河上游地区草场退化严重;牧民适应气候变化能力有限并有所减弱;城乡居民收入差距进一步加大,不利于社会的稳定发展。政策建议是:加强各级政府间的协作和政府部门的引导作用,统一利用和管理流域水资源;加强对低文化层次人群的教育工作;加速农村剩余劳动力向城市转移;继续实行生态环保政策;优化产业结构。  相似文献

In this fourth paper in a series, we present a model of the remarkable temporal and azimuthal variability of the Io plasma torus observed during the Cassini encounter with Jupiter. Over a period of three months, the Cassini Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (UVIS) observed a dramatic variation in the average torus composition. Superimposed on this long-term variation, is a 10.07-h periodicity caused by an azimuthal variation in plasma composition subcorotating relative to System III longitude. Quite surprisingly, the amplitude of the azimuthal variation appears to be modulated at the beat frequency between the System III period and the observed 10.07-h period. Previously, we have successfully modeled the months-long compositional change by supposing a factor of three increase in the amount of material supplied to Io's extended neutral clouds. Here, we extend our torus chemistry model to include an azimuthal dimension. We postulate the existence of two azimuthal variations in the number of superthermal electrons in the torus: a primary variation that subcorotates with a period of 10.07 h and a secondary variation that remains fixed in System III longitude. Using these two hot electron variations, our model can reproduce the observed temporal and azimuthal variations observed by Cassini UVIS.  相似文献

We present the first clear observations of meteor shower activity from meteor-head echoes detected by a high-power large-aperture radar (HPLAR). Such observations have been performed at the Jicamarca VHF radar using its interferometric capabilities allowing the discrimination of meteor shower echoes from the much more frequent sporadic meteors. Until now, HPLARs were unable to distinguish meteor shower from the much more common sporadic meteor ones. In this work we have been able to detect and characterize the η-Aquariids (ETA) as well as the Perseids (PER) showers. The shower activity is more conspicuous for the ETA than for the PER shower due to the more favorable geometry. Namely, PER meteors come from low elevation angles, experiencing more filtering due to the combined Earth-atmosphere-radar instrument. In both cases, there is an excellent agreement between the measured mean velocity of the shower echoes and their expected velocity, within a fraction of 1 km s−1. Besides the good agreement with expected visual results, HPLARs observe meteors with a variety of particles sizes and masses, not observed by any other technique. Taking into account the different viewing volumes, compare to optical observations Jicamarca observes more than 1000 times more ETA meteors. Our results indicate that Jicamarca and other HPLARs are able to detect the echoes from meteor showers, but without interferometric capabilities such populations are difficult to identify just from their velocity distributions, particularly if their velocity distributions are expected to be similar to the more dominant distributions of sporadic meteors.  相似文献

The OMEGA imaging spectrometer onboard the Mars Express spacecraft is particularly well suited to study in detail specific regions of Mars, thanks to its high spatial resolution and its high signal-to-noise ratio. We investigate the behavior of atmospheric water vapor over the four big volcanoes located on the Tharsis plateau (Olympus, Ascraeus, Pavonis and Arsia Mons) using the 2.6 μm band, which is the strongest and most sensitive H2O band in the OMEGA spectral range. Our data sample covers the end of MY26 and the whole MY27, with gaps only in the late northern spring and in northern autumn. The most striking result of our retrievals is the increase of water vapor mixing ratio from the valley to the summit of volcanoes. Corresponding column density is often almost constant, despite a factor of ∼5 decrease in air mass from the bottom to the top. This peculiar water enrichment on the volcanoes is present in 75% of the orbits in our sample. The seasonal distribution of such enrichment hints at a seasonal dependence, with a minimum during the northern summer and a maximum around the northern spring equinox. The enrichment possibly also has a diurnal trend, being the orbits with a high degree of enrichment concentrated in the early morning. However, the season and the solar time of the observations, due to the motion of the spacecraft, are correlated, then the two dependences cannot be clearly disentangled. Several orbits exhibit also spatially localized enrichment structures, usually ring- or crescent-shaped. We retrieve also the height of the saturation level over the volcanoes. The results show a strong minimum around the aphelion season, due to the low temperatures, while it raises quickly before and after this period. The enrichment is possibly generated by the local circulation characteristic of the volcano region, which can transport upslope significant quantities of water vapor. The low altitude of the saturation level during the early summer can then hinder the transport of water during this season. The influence of the coupling between atmosphere and surface, due mainly to the action of the regoliths, can also contribute partially to the observed phenomenon.  相似文献

We present a comprehensive examination of Jupiter's “gossamer” rings based on images from Voyager, Galileo, the Hubble Space Telescope and the W.M. Keck Telescope. We compare our results to the simple dynamical model of Burns et al. [Burns, J.A., Showalter, M.R., Hamilton, D.P., Nicholson, P.D., de Pater, I., Ockert-Bell, M., Thomas, P., 1999. Science 284, 1146-1150] in which dust is ejected from Amalthea and Thebe and then evolves inward under Poynting-Robertson drag. The ring follows many predictions of the model rather well, including a linear reduction in thickness with decreasing radius. However, some deviations from the model are noted. For example, additional material appears to be concentrated just interior to the orbits of the two moons. At least in the case of Amalthea's ring, that material is in the same orbital plane as Amalthea's inclined orbit and may be trapped at the Lagrange points. Thebe's ring shows much larger vertical excursions from the model, which may be related to perturbations by several strong Lorentz resonances. Photometry is consistent with the dust obeying a relatively flat power-law size distribution, very similar to dust in the main ring. However, the very low backscatter reflectivity of the ring, and the flat phase curve of the ring at low phase angles, require that the ring be composed of distinctly non-spherical particles.  相似文献

Lisse et al. [Lisse, C.M., Kraemer, K.E., Nuth III, J.A., Li, A., Joswiak, D., 2007. Icarus 187, 69-86] recently presented a new analysis of an ISO spectrum of Comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp), from which they claimed the identification of many new dust species. Among them are PAHs, which were not found in our first analysis of the ISO spectra. We present here a re-examination of the ISO observations of Comet Hale-Bopp. From the absence of PAHs features in the 5.25-8.5 μm region, we infer that PAHs are at least twice less abundant than derived by Lisse et al. The carbonate feature at 7.00 μm is marginally present, but lower by a factor 2 to 3 than predicted by the model of Lisse et al.  相似文献

A series of seven dedicated Lyman-α observations of exospheric atomic hydrogen in the martian corona were performed in March 2005 with the ultraviolet spectrometer SPICAM on board Mars Express. Two types of observations are analyzed, observations at high illumination (for a solar zenith angle SZA equal to 30°) and observations at low illumination (for a solar zenith angle equal to 90° (terminator), and near the south pole). The measured Lyman-α emission is interpreted as purely resonant scattering of solar photons. Because the Lyman-α emission is optically thick, we use a forward model to analyze this data. Below the exobase, the hydrogen density is described by a diffusive model and above the exobase, it follows Chamberlain's approach without satellite particles. For different hydrogen density profiles between 80 and 50,000 km, the volume emission rates are computed by solving the radiative transfer equation. Such an approach has been used to analyze the Mariner 6, 7 exospheric Lyman-α data during the late 1960s. A reasonable fit of the set of observations is obtained assuming an exobase temperature between 200 and 250 K and an exobase density of ∼1-4 × 105 cm−3 in good agreement with photochemical models. However, when considering the average exospheric temperature of 200 K measured by other methods [Leblanc, F., Chaufray, J.Y., Witasse, O., Lilensten, J., Bertaux, J.-L., 2006a. J. Geophys. E05014] a supplementary hot population is needed above the exobase to reconcile Lyman-α measurements with these previous measurements, particularly for the observations at low SZA. In this case, the densities and temperatures at the exobase for the two populations are 1.0±0.2×105 cm−3 and T=200 K and 1.9±0.5×104 cm−3 and T>500 K for the cold and hot populations respectively at low SZA. At high SZA, the densities and temperatures are equal to 2±0.4×105 cm−3 and T=200 K and n=1.2±0.5×104 cm−3 and T>500 K. These high values of the hot hydrogen component are not presently supported by the theory. Moreover, it is important to underline that the two population model remains relatively poorly constrained by the limited range of altitude covered by the present set of SPICAM measurements and cannot be unambiguously identified because of the global uncertainty of our model and of SPICAM measurements. For a one population solution, an average water escape rate of 7.5 × 10−4 precipitable μm/yr is estimated, yielding a lifetime of 13,000 years for the average present water vapor content of 10 precipitable microns.  相似文献
