A common method for compensating for grain-size differences in suites of sediment samples is to normalize potential contaminants by regression with a particular grain-size fraction, the <63 microm fraction being most often selected. However, this fraction is unlikely to represent accurately the clay content, which represents a major factor in the ability of sediments to adsorb contaminants. Moreover, no reliable estimation of clay content can be made from a coarser grain-size fraction. As a result, regression with coarser-grained fractions can produce spurious interpretations of background values and contamination. Normalization with the clay content or by an alternative grain-size proxy is recommended.  相似文献

An in situ laser particle sizer, the LISST-100, was used to describe the spatial variation of beam attenuation coefficient, in situ particle size spectra and aggregate densities in a dredging plume in the sound Øresund between Denmark and Sweden. The results proved that the above mentioned parameters varied significantly within the investigated length of the plume (approximately 2 km). It is shown how the small single primary particles aggregate and change the in situ particle size spectra into a slightly better sorted and coarser size distribution, and at the same time how the mean density of particles/aggregates decreases significantly. This shift in the state in which the particles exist in the water effectively changes the optical response of the mass of particles suspended in the water. It is shown that adequate correlations between mass concentrations and beam attenuation coefficients can only be obtained if parameters describing the in situ quality and state of the mass of particles, e.g. standard deviation of the size spectra and volume concentration, is included in the regression. From the spatial variation in mean density and in situ particle size, it was possible to calculate the spatial difference in settling velocity. It was found that the difference in settling velocity was only about a factor of 1.7, because increasing in situ particle size was counter-balanced by decreasing mean density. Furthermore, the time-scale of flocculation within the plume was found to be in the order of 50 min.  相似文献

The industrial zone of Porto Marghera is one the most important "contaminated sites of national interest" (SIN) in Italy, being identified as an area of high environmental risk. The site includes a wide shallow water area of the Venice Lagoon extending toward the city of Venice, which was investigated in order to acquire information on the pollutant level and distribution. Grain-size, heavy metal, nutrient, and organic micropollutant concentrations were determined in the surface sediment layers (0-5 and 5-10 cm depths) of 51 sites. A generally low contamination was found, except for Hg concentration, which increases the toxicological risk in most of the sites of the area, according to the results of a comparison with Sediment Quality Guidelines. A heavy pollution fingerprint (Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn up to 15.2, 257, 11.9, 248, and 3010 mg/kg d.w., respectively) was instead found near the Tresse Island, which is ascribed to the spill of pollutants from the contaminated sediment disposed therein. Grain-size and heavy metal profiles down to a depth of 40 cm in eight selected sites, finally show a probable decrease of the pollution affecting the area in recent years.  相似文献

The Anita Peridotite, in southwestern New Zealand, is a ∼1 × 20 km ultramafic massif that was rapidly extruded from beneath a Cretaceous arc within the 4 km wide mylonitic Anita Shear Zone. The peridotitic body contains a spectacular array of textures that preserve evidence for changing temperature, stress, and deformation mechanisms during the exhumation process. Olivine and orthopyroxene microstructures and lattice-preferred orientations (LPO) record a three-phase deformation history. Dislocation glide on the C- and E-type slip systems is recorded by coarse pre-mylonitised olivine grains, and occurred under hydrous conditions at T ∼650 °C, stress ∼200–700 MPa and strain rate ∼10−15 s−1, probably within hydrated sub-arc mantle lithosphere. Rare protomylonite pods record deformation by dislocation creep in porphyroclasts and dislocation-accommodated grain boundary sliding in the matrix on {0kl}[100] in olivine and (100)[001] in orthopyroxene, under conditions of T ∼730–770 °C, stress ∼52–700 MPa and strain rate ∼10−15 s−1. The massif, however, is dominated by mylonite and ultramylonite that wrap the protomylonite pods, comprising mostly fine-grained olivine neoblasts that lack internal distortions and have uniform LPOs. These textures indicate deformation occurred by grain-size sensitive (GSS) creep at T ∼650 °C, stress ∼69–137 MPa and strain rate ∼10−15 s−1, and thus during conditions of cooling and decreasing stress. GSS creep became more dominant with time, as the proportion of randomly-oriented neoblasts increased and formed interlinked networks that accommodated much of the strain. Grain boundary pinning allowed GSS creep to be maintained in polyphase regions, following mixing of olivine and orthopyroxene, which may have occurred by grain boundary transport in a fluid phase during a “creep cavitation” process. The results indicate that the Anita Peridotite recrystallised and underwent rheological weakening at a constant strain rate, with strain distributed across the entire section. This widespread deformation caused rapid exhumation of the peridotite from the lithospheric mantle into the overlying arc crust. The massif therefore records multiple overprinting phases of deformation under mantle and crustal conditions associated with the rapid exhumation of a large orogenic peridotite.  相似文献

The relation between grain-size distribution of the bed and in suspension was critically examined under a uniform flow velocity of 50 cm/s over two beds: one of mainly fine sands and the other of medium sands. Two sections – one 2.85 m downstream and the other 6.35 m downstream in the experimental channel-were selected for sampling to study the grain-sorting pattern in the vertical direction along the direction of transport. The shape and type of the grain-size distribution pattern were critically studied with height above the bed. The change in the distribution pattern has been attributed to the change of local bed roughness causing scouring against the protruded relatively coarse grains on the bed. Such trends are important to predict the nature of river bed topography. The sand of Bed-1 initially exhibits a log-skew-Laplace distribution at different heights of suspension. The distribution pattern, however, changes but this changing pattern is not consistent along the upstream side. For Bed-2, which initially exhibits a log-normal distribution, the same pattern persists from the height of suspension at 5 cm up to 20 cm. Such consistency in log-normality is also observed at the downstream points of measurement. It is generally expected that the mean grain-size would reduce with increases of suspension height but the results of the experiments, in some occasions, differ significantly from the gradual fining upward trend. This result has been attributed to local changes of bed roughness arising from the protruded relatively coarse grains causing eddies, scouring, and turbulent phenomena which moves coarse particles higher in suspension adding a coarse tail to the distribution increasing the mean grain-size.  相似文献

Accurate estimation of streambed vertical hydraulic conductivity (Kv) is of great importance in the analysis of water quantity exchange and solute transfer between a stream and its sediments. The paper analyzed the inaccuracy of hydraulic conductivity values of sediments derived from grain-size distribution (Kg), which were determined from eight empirical grain-size methods to represent streambed Kv. In this study, the values of Kv for a streambed were derived using falling-head standpipe permeameter tests conducted at eight study sites in the Elkhorn River, Nebraska, and the tested streambed columns were then collected for grain-size analysis by sieving. These empirical methods were used to calculate the Kg values of the streambed from grain-size distribution data of sediments. Unlike many other studies, this study verifies Kg from grain-size distribution with Kv from permeameter tests on the basis of the same samples of streambed sediments. The Kg values derived from the eight empirical methods were larger than the Kv from permeameter tests; there are five methods that give Kg values of about 3–6 times larger than these Kv. The Kg values from the Kozeny formula followed by the Hazen formula give the largest overestimation error if they are used to represent the Kv of the streambed. The USBR and Shepherd formulas generated Kg values close to Kv, but these Kg values are still larger in general than the Kv values. Moreover, the new values of coefficient C for the empirical formulas were revised so that they can be used to calculate the approximate Kv of a streambed. Among the eight methods, the ratios of the original C values to the average new C range from 1.3 to 5.9. It can be hypothesized that smaller C values must be used in the estimation of Kv for general soil samples if these empirical formulas are used to calculate Kv.  相似文献

 A total of 121 bed sediment samples were collected from a 5.8-km stretch of Manoa Stream, Hawaii. Samples were physically partitioned into two grain-size fractions, <63 μm and 63–125 μm, acid digested and analyzed by ICP-AES and FAAS. Non-parametric matched-pair statistical testing and correlation analysis were used to assess differences and strengths of association between the two fractions for Al, Ba, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Ti and Zn. Results indicated statistically significant differences between fractions for all elements except Mn. Concentrations were significantly greater in the <63 μm fraction for Al, Cu, Pb, Ti and Zn, while Ba, Fe and Ni were higher in the 63–125 μm fraction. Though some elements had statistically significant differences between fractions (Al, Ba, Fe and Zn) percentage differences were in the range of analytical precision of the instrument and thus differences were not practically significant. Correlation analysis indicated strong positive associations for all elements between the two fractions (p<0.0001). Three contamination indices indicated similar degrees of pollution for each size fraction for four elements having an anthropogenic signal (Ba, Cu, Pb and Zn). The environmental information obtained from the 63–125 μm fraction was essentially equivalent to that from the <63 μm fraction. In this system it is clear that both bed sediment fractions indicate anthropogenic enrichment of trace metals, especially Pb, and further supports previous research that has found that aquatic sediments are critical median for tracing sources of pollution.  Computer-assisted image analysis can be successfully used to derive quantitative textural data on pyroclastic rock samples. This method provides a large number of different measurements such as grain size, particle shape and 2D orientation of particle main axes (directional- or shape-fabric) automatically and in a relatively short time. Orientation data reduction requires specific statistical tests, mainly devoted to defining the kind of particle distribution pattern, the possible occurrence of preferred particle orientation, the confidence interval of the mean direction and the degree of randomness with respect to pre-assigned theoretical frequency distributions. Data obtained from image analysis of seven lithified ignimbrite samples from the Vulsini Volcanic District (Central Italy) are used to test different statistics and to provide insight about directional fabrics. First, the possible occurrence of a significant deviation from a theoretical circular uniform distribution was evaluated by using the Rayleigh and Tukey χ 2 tests. Then, the Kuiper test was performed to evaluate whether or not the observation fits with a unimodal, Von Mises-like theoretical frequency distribution. Finally, the confidence interval of mean direction was calculated. With the exception of one sample (FPD10), which showed a well-developed bimodality, all the analysed samples display significant anisotropic and unimodal distributions. The minimum number of measurements necessary to obtain reasonable variabilities of the calculated statistics and mean directions was evaluated by repeating random collections of the measured particles at increments of 100 particles for each sample. Although the observed variabilities depend largely on the pattern of distribution and an absolute minimum number cannot be stated, approximately 1500–2000 measurements are required in order to get meaningful mean directions for the analysed samples. 辽南滨海黄土具有沙黄土特征,主要由末次冰期低海面裸露的渤海海底物质经西北风短距离搬运堆积而成;黄土剖面中22~3φ粒级含量高~低~高变化(粗~细~粗粒度韵律层),表明沉积时干冷~湿凉~干冷的古气候特征及渤海海退~海侵~净退的历史。  相似文献
