The observational study of Herbig-Haro shock waves

We review the basic shock properties and the origin and the geometry of Herbig-Haro (H-H) shock waves. We first discuss different aspects of “normal” H-H objects which are connected with working surfaces (including internal working surfaces) of jets from young stellar objects. The emphasis is on unsolved problems of the H-H shock waves and not on the problems of the jet. We study the line flux ratios of high excitation H-H objects (high velocity shocks) and low excitation HH objects (low velocity shocks) and carry out a comparison with theoretical predictions in both cases. We emphasize an unexplained deficit of higher ions (especially OIII and SIII, but also various other ions) in high excitation objects. This lets the line flux ratios of HH objects appear as if their shock velocities are almost never above 100 km s^?1, while other shock diagnostics (position-velocity diagrams, integrated line profiles, distributions of fluxes along the axis of the bow shock, etc.) definitely indicate higher shock velocities. Some aspects of the spectrum interpretation of the very low velocity shocks (like HH7) are explained quite well by the theory. A basic unsolved problem is, however, the explanation of the CI lines whose flux is up to a factor 10 times stronger than predicted for any model. Obviously we are very far from correctly predicting the ionization of C in shock models. In the last chapter we discuss, as one example of a very unusual HH-object, HH255 (Burnham's nebula). Detailed line fluxes in the immediate environment of T Tauri (the source of HH255) have shown that HH255 has a shock wave spectrum and is definitely an HH object. In the very narrow region between 3″ and 4″ S of T Tauri we find a sharp peak of the velocity dispersion, the centroid velocity, and N_e. In the same region there is an almost discontinous increase in ionization. Between 4″ and 10″ S (corresponding to 600-1600 a.u.) of T Tauri (the source of HH255) the ionization remains high but the centroid velocity is zero (with respect to T Tauri) and the velocity dispersion is very small. This result is completely surprising for a shock wave which according to the flux ratios must have ～90 km s^?1-1 shock velocity. Why should a cooling region of a shock have a centroid velocity of ～0 km s^?1 over a large range of distance from the stellar source? At present the geometry of the HH255 is enigmatic.  相似文献

Dimorphodon and the Reverend George Howman's noctivagous flying dragon: the earliest restoration of a pterosaur in its natural habitat

A framed water colour of a noctivagous pterosaur by the Reverend G. E. Howman displayed on a wall on the first floor of the Philpot Museum, Lyme Regis, Dorset is the earliest depiction of a restored pterosaur in its life environment. The image is a naïve effort based more on mythology than on fact, but its haunting mood was a harbinger of antediluvian depictions by artists that were to become icons of prehistoric restoration. Magnetohydrodynamic study of shock waves in the current sheet of a solar coronal magnetic loop

A Lagrangian Remap (LareXd) Code is employed to investigate the shock wave formation in the current sheet of a solar coronal magnetic loop and its effect on the magnetic reconnection. We constructed the slow shock structure in the presence of viscosity and heat conduction parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field and pairs of slow shocks propagate away from the central current sheet, the so-called diffusion region. Significant jumps in plasma density, pressure, velocity and magnetic field occur across the main shock while the temperature appears in the foreshock. In the presence of dissipative effects, the distinct jumps disappear and the shock profiles show smooth transition between the downstream and the upstream regions while the plasma density and the pressure show very narrow and a sharp decrease with time. These results can be applied to the heating of the solar corona, the structure of the magnetic reconnection and the solar wind.  相似文献

元代郭守敬等1280年编制的《授时历》是中国本土科学家研制的最后一部历法,具有极高的精度。采用其仍可预报2012年5月21日发生的日食,其预报北京地区的见食情况时食甚时刻误差4 min,食分误差为0.04。给出了《授时历》推步的1990～2050年北京的见食情况及精度,其中食甚时刻的标准偏差为103.04 min,食分的标准偏差则不低于0.33。通过考察1280～2050年间186个日食计算结果,可得出《授时历》自行用以来推步日食的误差,考虑到存在错报(不可见)和漏报因素的影响,其食甚时刻和食分的标准偏差分别不低于50.65 min和0.19;同时指出,随着行用时间的延长其推时误差也逐步放大。  相似文献
