Value of tectonic regions in the United States

Occurrence of mineral resources is directly or indirectly controlled by major tectonic processes. Additionally, similar mineral deposit types tend to be concentrated within geologically and tectonically similar areas. As a result, information on the production history of minerals in a well-explored and developed tectonic region—such as within the United States—can be used to estimate resources of geologically similar, underdeveloped tectonic areas elsewhere. For such application, two regions should be compared for geologic similarity using all available geologic information. Estimates of resources based on geologic analogy can be useful in large-scale mineral exploration programs where relatively little geologic information is available, such as in many developing countries. In this study, seven major tectonic regions within the United States are evaluated in terms of estimated mineral value as measured by historical mineral production and economic reserves. The seven regions assessed are: (1) Cordilleran Mountain Belt, (2) Colorado Plateau, (3) Central Stable Region, (4) Canadian Shield, (5) Ozark-Ouachtia Province, (6) Gulf and Atlantic Coastal Plain, and (7) Appalachian Mountain Belt. Regions are ranked in terms of estimated value of (1) 33 major mineral commodities, (2) nonfuel minerals, (3) hydrocarbons, and (4) individual mineral commodities. In terms of total value of historical mineral production and estimated economic reserve amounts of 33 major mineral commodities, the Gulf and Atlantic Coastal Plain is most valuable, with an estimated value of 1980 US$1,970,000/km². Information on historical mineral production of U.S. tectonic regions may be useful in estimating resources in tectonically similar, underdeveloped regions elsewhere.  相似文献

On the basis of "The Statistical Data of Guangdong Province in 1981" and the 14 selected original variables, 107 counties and suburbs in Guangdong are classified. In the classification, cluster analysis is applied, and the cluster hierarchy of the agro-ecosystem is achieved with a computer. According to output level, planting structure, and input level of energy, there is an evident regionalism in the agro-ecosystem of Guangdong, which presents approximately concentric circles centralized by Guangzhou City.  相似文献

REGIONAL WATER MANAGEMENT: AN ASSESSMENT OF INSTITUTIONS IN ENGLAND AND WALES1

Water management institutions vary in comprehensiveness, level of governmental intervention, and basis of geographic delimitation. In 1973 the British Parliament created ten integrated water authorities in England and Wales based on river basins. They are responsible for all aspects of the water industry and are virtually the sole providers of water services. In 1983 Parliament reorganized the governing boards of the authorities along corporate lines. Evaluation of the British institutional arrangement and performance suggests that the comprehensive regional water authorities facilitate efficiency, effectiveness, and adequate technology, but that they limit representation of legitimate local and public interests and poorly accommodate existing governmental units.  相似文献

根据最新的航磁资料,主要探讨了新疆东部基底性质及岩相分区,指出在天山地区除普通存在古生界浅变质基底外,于吐鲁番—哈密盆地中南部深层还存在强磁性基底.库鲁克塔格地区由于元古界多为弱磁性或无磁性岩石,因而显示负磁场面貌,该区与南天山、塔里木盆地北部为区域负背景异常,推测它们为同一深部因素控制的构造区.磁场资料可清楚地圈定出塔里木地台东部边界.文中还对原中天山隆起带出现的升高变化异常提出了解释依据.  相似文献
