We present new space geodetic data indicating that the present slip rate on the Hunter Mountain–Panamint Valley fault zone in Eastern California (5.0 ± 0.5 mm/yr) is significantly faster than geologic estimates based on fault total offset and inception time. We interpret this discrepancy as evidence for an accelerating fault and propose a new model for fault initiation and evolution. In this model, fault slip rate initially increases with time; hence geologic estimates averaged over the early stages of the fault's activity will tend to underestimate the present-day rate. The model is based on geologic data (total offset and fault initiation time) and geodetic data (present day slip rate). The model assumes a monotonic increase in slip rate with time as the fault matures and straightens. The rate increase follows a simple Rayleigh cumulative distribution. Integrating the rate-time path from fault inception to present-day gives the total fault offset.  相似文献

High-performance numerical codes are an indispensable tool for hydrogeologists when modeling subsurface flow and transport systems. But as they are written in compiled languages, like C/C++ or Fortran, established software packages are rarely user-friendly, limiting a wider adoption of such tools. OpenGeoSys (OGS), an open-source, finite-element solver for thermo-hydro-mechanical–chemical processes in porous and fractured media, is no exception. Graphical user interfaces may increase usability, but do so at a dramatic reduction of flexibility and are difficult or impossible to integrate into a larger workflow. Python offers an optimal trade-off between these goals by providing a highly flexible, yet comparatively user-friendly environment for software applications. Hence, we introduce ogs5py , a Python-API for the OpenGeoSys 5 scientific modeling package. It provides a fully Python-based representation of an OGS project, a large array of convenience functions for users to interact with OGS and connects OGS to the scientific and computational environment of Python.  相似文献

Black shale is often rich in sulfides and trace elements, and is thus a potential environmental threat in a manner similar to acid sulfate soils and active or abandoned sulfide mines. This study aims at characterising how exposed and processed (mined and burnt) black shale (alum shale) in Degerhamn, SE Sweden, affects the chemistry (Al, As, Ba, Cd, Ca, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Pb, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, K, Si, Na, Sr, S, U, V and Zn) of the groundwater. There were large variations in groundwater chemistry between nearby sampling points, while the temporal variations generally were small. Acidic groundwater (around pH 4), found in deposits of burnt and carbonate-poor shale where the conditions for sulfide oxidation were favourable, was strongly elevated in Al, U and several chalcophilic metals (Cd, Co, Cu, Ni and Zn). Cadmium and U were also, together with Mo, abundant in many of the near-neutral waters, both in the non-mined black shale bedrock and in the deposits of burnt shale. An extrapolation to a national level suggests that the dispersion of Ni from naturally occurring black shale is similar to that from anthropogenic point sources, while for Cd and As it is assessed to be approximately one tenth of that from point sources. The processed shale was, however, a much larger source of metals than the black shale bedrock itself, showing this material’s potential as a massive supplier of metals to the aquatic environment. A comparison of waters in contact with the processed Cambrian–Ordovician black shale in Degerhamn and acid sulfate soils of the region shows that these two sulfide-bearing materials, in many respects very different, delivers basically the same suite of trace elements to the aquatic environment. This has implications for environmental planning and protection in areas where these types of materials exist.  相似文献

Mn(II) oxidation in the suboxic zone of the water column was studied at four stations in the western Black Sea. We measured Mn(II) oxidation rates using 54Mn tracer and tested the hypothesis of alternative oxidants for Mn(II) other than dissolved oxygen. In anoxic incubation experiments with water from different depths of the chemocline, Mn(II) was not oxidized by nitrite, nitrate, or iodate. In the presence of light, Mn(II) also was not oxidized under anoxic conditions as well. Anaerobic Mn(II) oxidizing microorganisms could not be enriched. In oxic incubation experiments, the addition of alternative oxidants did not significantly increase the Mn(II) oxidation rate. The lack of an anaerobic Mn(II) oxidation in our experiments does not unambiguously prove the absence of anaerobic Mn(II) oxidation in the Black Sea but suggests that dissolved oxygen is the only oxidant for biologically catalyzed Mn(II) oxidation. Lateral intrusions of modified Bosphorus water were shown to be the main mechanism providing dissolved oxygen in the suboxic and the upper anoxic zones and explaining observed Mn(II) oxidation rates. Maximum in situ Mn(II) oxidation rates in the suboxic zone were 1.1 nM Mn(II) per h in the central Black Sea, 25 nM Mn(II) per h on the Romanian continental slope and 60 nM Mn(II) per h on the Anatolian continental slope. These rates correlate with the amount of particulate Mn and the number of Mn-oxide particles and are in agreement with rates measured 13 yr before. Our study highlights the importance of lateral intrusions of oxygen for the ventilation of the suboxic zone and the anoxic interior and for the regulation of different oxidation-reduction processes in the chemocline, including Mn(II) oxidation, which may be significant for other anoxic basins as well.  相似文献

Variscan deformation in the Palæozoic foreland of the Moroccan Anti-Atlas is characterised by its heterogeneous character and its dampening effect towards the Tindouf Basin. Structural analyses shows three sequential episodes of deformation, D1, D2 and D3, displayed at different levels of observation. The first episode D1, which was observed for the first time in the western Anti-Atlas Hercynian Belt provides clear evidence for tangential tectonic deformation operating before the major phase of folding. It corresponds to an early event of ‘thin-skin tectonics’, which develops a composite schistosity related to ductile horizontal pure shearing. It is considered that D1 was responsible for the first folding of the sedimentary sequences associated with several imbricated thrust sheets with vergence to the east. The second episode, D2, represents the major phase of north-northeast-southwest Variscan folding. The D3 episode was more discrete, of brittle type and marked by subequatorial sinistral kink-bands.This D1 tangential event, in the western Anti-Atlas, Morocco, represents a typical structural domain as part of the tectonic evolution during Variscan-Appalachian collision.  相似文献

Late in the summers of 1997 and 1998 surveys of common eider ( Somateria mollissima ) colonies were conducted throughout Avanersuaq Municipality in north-west Greenland. Although old information from eider colonies was available, these surveys provided the first almost all colonies in the district, thereby improving the baseline data for assessing future population changes. The surveys were based on nest counts, and all but two colonies in the district were counted, In total, 3800 nest were counted and an educated guess for the total population in Avanersuaq Municipality, including the two inaccessible colonies, would be around 5000 pairs. Average clutch size was 3.74 similar to or higher than in other areas of Greenland and high Artic Canada suggesting favourable conditions for eiders in the survey area. Comparison with older data suggests that the breeding population in Avanersuaq is stable. This observation contrasts with the declines ocserved in other parts of Greenland. Further studies into possible population specific mirigation routs and wintering areas as well as the direct and indirect effects of the intensive winter hunting in south-west Greenland are warranted.  相似文献
