Public perceptions of climate change are traditionally measured through surveys. The exploding popularity of social networks, however, presents a new opportunity to research the spatiotemporal pattern of public discourse in relation to natural and/or socio-economic events. Among the social networks, Twitter is one of the largest microblogging services. The architecture of Twitter makes the question “what's happening?” the cornerstone of information exchange. This inspired the notion of using Twitter users as distributed sensors, which has been successfully employed in both the natural and social sciences. In 2012 and 2013, we collected 1.8 million tweets on “climate change” and “global warming” in five major languages (English, German, Russian, Portuguese, and Spanish). We discuss the geography of tweeting, weekly and daily patterns, major news events that affected tweeting on climate change, changes in the central topics of discussion over time, the most authoritative traditional media, blogging, and the most authoritative organizational sources of information on climate change referenced by Twitter users in different countries. We anticipate that social network mining will become a major source of data in the public discourse on climate change.  相似文献

Salinity is a critical factor in understanding and predicting physical and biogeochemical processes in the coastal ocean where it varies considerably in time and space. In this paper, we introduce a Chesapeake Bay community implementation of the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ChesROMS) and use it to investigate the interannual variability of salinity in Chesapeake Bay. The ChesROMS implementation was evaluated by quantitatively comparing the model solutions with the observed variations in the Bay for a 15-year period (1991 to 2005). Temperature fields were most consistently well predicted, with a correlation of 0.99 and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.5°C for the period, with modeled salinity following closely with a correlation of 0.94 and RMSE of 2.5. Variability of salinity anomalies from climatology based on modeled salinity was examined using empirical orthogonal function analysis, which indicates the salinity distribution in the Bay is principally driven by river forcing. Wind forcing and tidal mixing were also important factors in determining the salinity stratification in the water column, especially during low flow conditions. The fairly strong correlation between river discharge anomaly in this region and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation suggests that the long-term salinity variability in the Bay is affected by large-scale climate patterns. The detailed analyses of the role and importance of different forcing, including river runoff, atmospheric fluxes, and open ocean boundary conditions, are discussed in the context of the observed and modeled interannual variability.  相似文献

A difference-spectrum method is proposed for the qualitative assessment of changes of illite-smectite structures accompanying the flooding of oil reservoirs. The method permits one to get an open system and reduce the application of procedures based on Markov’s chain formalism. A computer simulation is made to obtain spectra by subtracting the spectrum of an ethylene glycol-saturated sample from the spectrum of an air-dried preparation throughout the entire range of concentrations of illite and smectite components with a short-range order factor R = 0 or R = 3.It has been established that only in the presence of filtration are the maximum and minimum of the spectra in the range of 12.5-9.4 A complicated by a number of local extrema, whose position is specified by the structure of intermediate phases. The flooding process first involves mixed-layer phases with R = 0, leading to a partial segregation of the structures into phase with one and two networks of interlayer H2O. When the secondary mica particles break, phases with R = 3 appear along the boundaries of nanoblocks, first only with 1 H2O and then only with 2 H2O in labile interspaces. Their coexistence with the phases R = 0 in the sample proves the existence of percolation effects due to two-phase filtration in the porous medium. The fully flooded reservoir is always dominated by a mechanical mixture of illite-smectite phases of different nature with R = 0 and with different ratios of components. Transformation of mica that can drastically reduce oil production begins long before the appearance of flooding zones, which are revealed by standard logging methods.  相似文献

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) is a joint space mission between NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) designed to monitor and study tropical rainfall. In this study, the daily rainfall from TRMM has been utilized to simulate the soil moisture content up to 30 cm vertical soil profile of at an interval depth of 15 cm by using the HYDRUS 1D numerical model for the three plots. The simulated soil moisture content using ground-based rainfall and TRMM-derived rainfall measurements indicate an agreeable goodness of fit between the both. The Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency using ground-based and TRMM-derived rainfall was found in the range of 0.90–0.68 and 0.70–0.40, respectively. The input data sensitivity analysis of precipitation combined with different irrigation treatment indicates a high dependency of soil moisture content with rainfall input. The overall analysis reveals that TRMM rainfall is promising for soil moisture prediction in absence of ground-based measurements of soil moisture.  相似文献

Successful retrieval of urban impervious surface area is achieved with remote sensing data using the multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis (MESMA). MESMA is well suited for studying the urban impervious surface area because it allows the number and types of the endmembers to vary on a per-pixel basis, thereby, allowing the control of the large spectral variability. However, MESMA must calculate all potential endmember combinations of each pixel to determine the best-fit one. Therefore, it is a time-consuming and inefficient unmixing technology, especially for hyperspectral images because these images have more complicated endmember categories. Hence, in this paper, we design an improved MESMA (SASD-MESMA: spectral angle and spectral distance MESMA) to enhance the computational efficiency of conventional MESMA, and we validate this new method by analyzing the Hyperion image (Jan-2011) and the field-spectra data of Guangzhou (China). In SASD-MESMA, the parameters of spectral angle (SA) and spectral distance (SD) are used to evaluate the similarity degree between library spectra and image spectra in order to identify the most representative endmember combination for each pixel. Results demonstrate that the SA and SD parameters are useful to reduce misjudgment in selecting candidate endmembers and effective for determining the appropriate endmembers in one pixel. Meanwhile, this research indicates that the proposed SASD-MESMA performs very well in retrieving impervious surface area, forest, grass and soil distributions on the sub-pixel level (the overall root mean square error (RMSE) is 0.15 and the correlation coefficient of determination (R2) is 0.68).  相似文献

An analytical 3-D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) solution of a magnetic-flux rope (FR) is presented. This FR solution may explain the uniform propagation, beyond ~?0.05 AU, of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) commonly observed by today’s missions like The Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI), Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO), tracked to tens of times the radius of the Sun, and in some cases up to 1 AU, and/or beyond. Once a CME occurs, we present arguments regarding its evolution based on its mass and linear momentum conservation. Here, we require that the gravitational and magnetic forces balance each other in the framework of the MHD theory for a simple model of the evolution of a CME, assuming it interacts weakly with the steady solar wind. When satisfying these ansätze we identify a relation between the transported mechanical mass of the interplanetary CME with its geometrical parameters and the intensity of the magnetic field carried by the structure. In this way we are able to estimate the mass of the interplanetary CME (ICME) for a list of cases, from the Wind mission records of ICME encountered near Earth, at 1 AU. We obtain a range for masses of ~?109 to 1013 kg, or assuming a uniform distribution, of ~?0.5 to 500 cm?3 for the hadron density of these structures, a result that appears to be consistent with observations.  相似文献

Incorporating new altimeter data from CryoSat-2 (30 months), Envisat (18 months), and Jason-1 (7 months) satellites into an updated marine gravity field yields significant reduction in noise and improved resolution. Compared to an older gravity field that did not include the new altimeter data, incoherent power is reduced globally by approximately 2.9 dB at 15 km, 1.6 dB at 20 km, and 1.0 dB at 25 km wavelengths. Coherence analyses between the updated gravity and recent multibeam surveys distributed throughout the world’s oceans shows an average increase of ~0.023 in mean coherence in the 20–160 km waveband, with the biggest increase (>0.08) over fast spreading ridges and smallest (<0.02) over slow spreading ridges and continental shelves. The shortest wavelength at which coherence is above 0.5 decreased globally by ~2 km wavelength, with the biggest decrease (>3.5 km) over fast spreading ridges and smallest (<1.5 km) over slow spreading ridges and continental shelves. In the Clipperton fracture zone area these improvements result in seamounts that are more accurately located, the detection of smaller seamounts, and the expression of north–south trending abyssal hill fabric. As more altimeter data from the ongoing satellite missions are incorporated into future gravity field updates, finer-scale details of the seafloor will continue to emerge.  相似文献

We present a new particle-based (discrete element) numerical method for the simulation of granular dynamics, with application to motions of particles on small solar system body and planetary surfaces. The method employs the parallel N-body tree code pkdgrav to search for collisions and compute particle trajectories. Collisions are treated as instantaneous point-contact events between rigid spheres. Particle confinement is achieved by combining arbitrary combinations of four provided wall primitives, namely infinite plane, finite disk, infinite cylinder, and finite cylinder, and degenerate cases of these. Various wall movements, including translation, oscillation, and rotation, are supported. We provide full derivations of collision prediction and resolution equations for all geometries and motions. Several tests of the method are described, including a model granular “atmosphere” that achieves correct energy equipartition, and a series of tumbler simulations that show the expected transition from tumbling to centrifuging as a function of rotation rate.  相似文献

博斯腾湖表层沉积物无机碳及其稳定同位素空间异质性   总被引:4,自引:2,他引:2  
2012年8月,在新疆博斯腾湖13个站点进行表层沉积物采集,分析无机碳及其碳、氧稳定同位素的含量和空间分布特征,探讨该湖表层沉积物无机碳(TIC)的空间变化影响因素.结果表明:2012年,博斯腾湖表层沉积物TIC含量平均值为5.5%,变幅为3.8%~9.8%,而δ13Ccarb和δ18Ocarb平均值分别为0.71‰和-4.4‰,范围为-0.23‰~2.27‰和-5.53‰~-2.55‰.从空间来看,湖泊北岸TIC值明显高于南岸,最高值出现在湖泊西北部的黄水沟水域,而河口区和湖心区最低.总体上,博斯腾湖表层沉积物TIC主要是湖泊自生的,其空间分布主要受开都河、黄水沟等入湖河水的影响,导致水体矿化度和营养盐的空间差异,进而影响了碳酸盐的析出与沉淀.另外,湖泊局部的水动力条件也影响TIC的保存与分布.δ13Ccarb与δ18Ocarb的极显著正相关说明近几年博斯腾湖封闭程度较好,尤其是东部大湖区,属于封闭环境碳酸盐沉淀.  相似文献

为了深入认识全球四维变分同化系统(Global Regional Assimilation and Prediction System Four-Dimensional Variational, GRAPES 4DVAR)分析场质量,利用2019年3月1日至2020年2月29日GRAPES 4DVAR 7层等压面的高度、温度、纬向和经向风等4个要素的分析场及同期ERA5再分析场资料和探空观测资料,基于Pearson相关系数、偏差统计和EOF分解等多种统计分析方法,对GRAPES 4DVAR分析场质量进行了评估。结果表明:(1)GRAPES 4DVAR各要素分析场与ERA5再分析场具有显著的正相关(相关系数均通过α=0.01显著性水平检验),其中高度场和温度场的相关系数大于0.99,风场的相关系数大于0.85,GRAPES 4DVAR分析场和ERA5再分析场与探空观测的均方根偏差值的大小及分布相似,表明GRAPES 4DVAR同化分析场具有较高的质量,且北半球和南半球的分析质量优于热带地区;(2)GRAPES 4DVAR温度和风的分析场与ERA5再分析场在北半球和南半球的偏差存在较明显的季节变化和空间变化,表现为夏半年偏差小于冬半年,中层偏差小于低层和高层,且在对流层低层(高层),南半球(热带地区)的偏差大于北半球和热带地区(南半球);(3)不同要素分析偏差的特征显示,温度分析偏差主要出现在对流层低层,极大值区位于北极和南极地区,而风场分析偏差主要位于对流层中高层,极大值区主要分布于青藏高原、非洲大陆西部及北部、东太平洋及大西洋赤道附近区域。  相似文献
