Experiments were conducted in which we tested the effects of hexavalent chromium on both natural assemblages of phytoplankton and cultures of Thalassiosira pseudonana clone 3H. Water was collected from various locations in Yaquina Bay, Oregon, with salinities ranging from 32·5‰ to 0·03‰. A variety of nutrient regimes were tested by adding major nutrients and micro-nutrients, and/or stripping micro-nutrients with activated carbon. In one high salinity experiment, chromium was stimulatory, as were micro-nutrient additions. In other high and medium salinity experiments, chromium was neither stimulatory nor inhibitory, at levels up to 1·9 μ mole l?1 Cr. There was, however, slight inhibition of growth at 19·0 μ mole l?1 Cr, due specifically to inhibition of Skeletonema costatum. In our freshwater experiments, chromium was very inhibitory at 1·9 μ mole l?1 Cr, and slightly inhibitory at 0·19 μ mole l?1 Cr. Species inhibited by chromium were Surirella ovata, Detonula confervacea, and Cyclotella sp. Experiments were conducted with T. pseudonana grown over a wide range of salinities. Chromium was found to be very inhibitory in freshwater and became progressively less toxic as the salinity increased. Most inhibition was neutralized by a salinity of 2·1‰.  相似文献

Dissolved concentrations of four forms of arsenic: arsenite, arsenate, monomethylarsenic, and dimethylarsenic, were measured in the Patuxent River Estuary near Benedict, Maryland, over two annual cycles. In each year, total arsenic concentrations peaked in the summer, in late July and August, while minimum concentrations occurred in winter. Except in late winter, aresenate was a predominant form of arsenic present. In late winter and spring, dimethylarsenic was also a predominant form. A period of monomethylarsenic abundance occurred in summer, following the predominance of dimethylarsenic. Arsenite occurred irregularly in spring. Concurrent temperature and salinity measurements in indicate that total arsenic concentrations rose before the summer increase in salinity, suggesting an arsenic source other than the end members, the Patuxent River or Chesapeake Bay.  相似文献

Due to the difficulties experienced with the so-called gatch soils, the Ministry of Public Works of Kuwait engaged the services of the firm DORSCH, Consulting Engineers of Munich, Germany, to study the properties of gatch and to recommend methods to improve its suitability for road construction. An investigation program was agreed upon and selected samples were obtained from Kuwait.Prior to the geotechnical tests, mineralogical analyses were carried out. Surprisingly they found no trace in the samples of gypsum which was believed to cause damage to the highways built on gatch. The geotechnical tests performed indicated that the gatch soils were very sensitive to moisture and were therefore unsuitable as highway construction materials. However, their properties could be improved by various stabilization methods. It was found that cement stabilization was the most promising method since it not only increased the bearing capacity of the soil but also reduced its swelling characteristics.  相似文献

Measurements of dissolved As, Cr, Cu, and Se using species-selective techniques were made in the tidal freshwater Delaware River at four sites in July 1991, January 1992, and March 1992. Concentrations of dissolved As, Cr, and Se were generally higher in July than in March or January. Copper concentrations were relatively constant. Both As and Cu increased in concentration in the region of Philadelphia. Measurements of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni, Se, and Zn in seston were made during the July 1991 and March 1992 sampling using both a total digest and a series of sequential leaches. A large fraction of most of the elements, in the order Cd>Zn>Pb≥Cu>Ni≥As>Cr>Se, was solubilized by weak acid. The remainding fraction, for elements where the acid leach was not complete, was released by a rigorous digestion with concentrated acids. Based on estimates of similar rivers, Pb and Zn appear to be substantially enriched in Delaware River seston compared to other rivers draining the same geological provinces. Arsenic, Se, and Cd in seston may be moderately enriched.  相似文献

From the distribution of dissolved and solid arsenic species in a contaminated estuarine sediment and measured rates of flux of the various arsenic species we propose an empirical model for the cycling of arsenic between sediments and water column. The chemical form of arsenic in the sediment was largely determined by the redox state of the sediment. Arsenite was the dominant dissolved and solid species in the deeper reduced sediment, and arsenate was dominant in the oxidized surface layer. Arsenite in the interstitial water diffused toward the surface layer, where it was mostly oxidized to arsenate prior to leaving the sediments. Some arsenate adsorbed to the surface sediments and produced a surface layer enriched in arsenic. Small concentrations of methyl and dimethyl arsenic were produced in the sediments, and these also diffused into the overlying water.Nereis succinea, a burrowing polychaete, affected distribution and flux of arsenic from the sediments by its production of irrigated burrows. These burrows increased both the effective surface area of the sediment and the diffusion of arsenic by a factor of five. When the relative effects of the activities of Nereis succinea and physical resuspension are compared, results indicate that although physical resuspension can produce large pulses of materials from contaminated sediments, continuous biological activity is likely to be more important in the mobilization of contaminants from sediments in many estuarine environments.  相似文献

We examine the magnitude, frequency, and precipitation threshold of the extreme flood hazard on 37 low-order streams in the lower Stehekin River Valley on the arid eastern slope of the North Cascades. Key morphometric variables identify the magnitude of the hazard by differentiating debris flood from debris flow systems. Thirty-two debris flow systems are fed by basins?<?6 km2 and deposited debris cones with slopes?>?10°. Five debris flood systems have larger drainage areas and debris fans with slopes 7–10°. The debris flood systems have Melton ruggedness ratios from 0.42–0.64 compared to 0.78–3.80 for debris flow basins. We record stratigraphy at seven sites where soil surfaces buried by successive debris flows limit the age of events spanning 6000 years. Eighteen radiocarbon ages from the soils are the basis for estimates of a 200 to1500-year range in recurrence interval for larger debris flows and a 450?±?50-year average. Smaller events occur approximately every 100 years. Fifteen debris flows occurred in nine drainage systems in the last 15 years, including multiple flows on three streams. Summer storms in 2010 and 2013 with peak rainfall intensities of 7–9 mm/h sustained for 8–11 h triggered all but one flow; the fall 2015 event on Canyon Creek occurred after 170 mm of rain in 78 h. A direct link between fires and debris flows is unclear because several recent debris flows occurred in basins that did not burn or burned at low intensity, and basins that burned at high intensity did not carry debris flows. All but one of the recent flows and fires occurred on the valley’s southwest-facing wall. We conclude that fires and debris flows are linked by aspect at the landscape scale, where the sunny valley wall has flashy runoff due to sparse vegetation from frequent fires.

A wide-spread bottom simulating reflector (BSR), interpreted to mark the thermally controlled base of the gas hydrate stability zone, is observed over a close grid of multichannel seismic profiles in the Krishna Godavari Basin of the eastern continental margin of India. The seismic data reveal that gas hydrate occurs in the Krishna Godavari Basin at places where water depths exceed 850 m. The thickness of the gas hydrate stability zone inferred from the BSR ranges up to 250 m. A conductive model was used to determine geothermal gradients and heat flow. Ground truth for the assessment and constraints on the model were provided by downhole measurements obtained during the National Gas Hydrate Program Expedition 01 of India at various sites in the Krishna Godavari Basin. Measured downhole temperature gradients and seafloor-temperatures, sediment thermal conductivities, and seismic velocity are utilized to generate regression functions for these parameters as function of overall water depth. In the first approach the base of gas hydrate stability is predicted from seafloor bathymetry using these regression functions and heat flow and geothermal gradient are calculated. In a second approach the observed BSR depth from the seismic profiles (measured in two-way travel time) is converted into heat flow and geothermal gradient using the same ground-truth data. The geothermal gradient estimated from the BSR varies from 27 to 67°C/km. Corresponding heat flow values range from 24 to 60 mW/m2. The geothermal modeling shows a close match of the predicted base of the gas hydrate stability zone with the observed BSR depths.  相似文献

Gas hydrates in the western deep-water Ulleung Basin, East Sea of Korea   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Geophysical surveys and geological studies of gas hydrates in the western deep-water Ulleung Basin of the East Sea off the east coast of Korea have been carried out by the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) since 2000. The work included a grid of 4782 km of 2D multi-channel seismic reflection lines and 11 piston cores 5–8 m long. In the piston cores, cracks generally parallel to bedding suggest significant in-situ gas. The cores showed high amounts of total organic carbon (TOC), and from the southern study area showed high residual hydrocarbon gas concentrations. The lack of higher hydrocarbons and the carbon isotope ratios indicate that the methane is primarily biogenic. The seismic data show areas of bottom-simulating reflectors (BSRs) that are associated with gas hydrates and underlying free gas. An important observation is the numerous seismic blanking zones up to 2 km across that probably reflect widespread fluid and gas venting and that are inferred to contain substantial gas hydrate. Some of the important results are: (1) BSRs are widespread, although most have low amplitudes; (2) increased P-wave velocities above some BSRs suggest distributed low to moderate concentration gas hydrate whereas a velocity decrease below the BSR suggests free gas; (3) the blanking zones are often associated with upbowing of sedimentary bedding reflectors in time sections that has been interpreted at least in part due to velocity pull-up produced by high-velocity gas hydrate. High gas hydrate concentrations are also inferred in several examples where high interval velocities are resolved within the blanking zones. Recently, gas hydrate recoveries by the piston coring and deep-drilling in 2007 support the interpretation of substantial gas hydrate in many of these structures.  相似文献
