Abstract The results of this dendrogeomorphological study provide evidence of the active movement of Hilda rock glacier, a tongue‐shaped rock glacier in the Columbia Icefield region of Banff National Park. Cross‐sectional samples were cut from 44 detrital subalpine fir (Abies Iasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt.) and Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii Parry) boles killed and buried by debris spilling off the steep distal slope of the rock glacier. The samples were crossdated using locally and regionally developed tree‐ring chronologies, and were shown to have been killed between 1576 and 1999. Our results show that Hilda rock glacier has advanced at an average rate of 1.6 cm/year since the late 1790s, with limited evidence of similar rates of activity extending back to the mid‐1570s. This rock glacier activity is believed to be linked to persistent periglacial processes that appear to be independent of the climatic forcing mechanisms known to influence glacier mass balances over the same interval. 相似文献

We analyse active-experiment seismic data obtained by the 1993 Jemez Tomography Experiment (JTEX) programme to elucidate the heterogeneous structure of the Jemez volcanic field, which is located at the boundary between the Colorado Plateau and the Rio Grande Rift. Using a single isotropic scattering assumption, we first calculate the envelope Green's functions for the upper and lower crust and the uppermost mantle. By fitting the theoretical envelopes with the observed three-component data, we estimate depth-dependent features of the scattering coefficients around Valles Caldera. We estimate the ratios of scattering coefficients, rather than scattering coefficients themselves, because of the uncertainty of the seismic efficiency of the explosive sources and knowledge of absolute site-amplification factors. The strongest scattering coefficients are observed at a shallow depth beneath the Valles Caldera. This is considered to be related to the complex structure caused by two episodes of caldera formation and the ensuing resurgent uplift in the caldera, etc. The depth-dependent characters of the scattering coefficients for the Colorado Plateau and the Rio Grande Rift are similar to each other: a transparent upper crust and a heterogeneous lower crust (small and large scattering coefficients, respectively). However, the scattering coefficients beneath the Rio Grande Rift are several times larger than those beneath the Colorado Plateau. Depths of the lower crust and the Moho boundary beneath the Rio Grande Rift are shallower than those of the Colorado Plateau. From their geological settings and other geophysical results around the region, we infer that the larger scattering coefficients of the rift are associated with rift formation and volcanic activity, such as magma ascent from the upper mantle to the crust. 相似文献

Snow cloud growth rates of powder snow avalanche were obtained with analysing the pictures recorded in Ryggfonn, Norway. Although results showed wide scattering, as far as the data obtained in runout zone are concerned, they roughly agreed with the water tank experiments by Beghin and Olagne (1991).Air movement in snow avalanche cloud was measured with an ultra-sonic anemometer in Kurobe Canyon, Japan. It showed rising current existed near the front and downward at the trail. Comparing with drifting snow threshold and particle suspension criterion, entrainment, suspension and deposition of snow particles in the snow cloud were discussed. 相似文献

A newly designed phase-shift interferometer and a reaction cell have been developed to investigate the alteration process and the safety assessment of an artificial barrier and the surrounding rocks during interaction with high pH solutions in repository sites.We advanced a conventional interferometer with a laser to a phase-shift interferometer with a white-light. Developments and evaluations were also made on the reaction cells at high temperature, high pressure and high pH conditions. Potentials of our established system, involving a newly equipped image-processing, were practically tested by dissolution experiments on calcite in various aqueous solutions. It was successfully confirmed that the developed phase-shift interferometer system can detect very slow retreat in short-periods with high enough precision to evaluate the dissolution kinetics. 相似文献

Integrated colors of M3, M5, M13, and M92 are calculated from the luminosity function, the color-magnitude diagram, and the two-color diagram to compare them with observed ones. The results show good agreements for M3, M13, and M92 and the discrepancy for M5. Possible causes for this discrepancy are discussed.To study the way in which integrated colors are affected by changes in the distribution of stars in the color-magnitude diagram, we calculate the integrated colors by taking into account changes in the distribution of horizontal branch stars and in the ratio of the number of horizontal branch stars to that of red giant branch stars. The result shows that (B-V) color varies within the range of about 0.1 mag with changes in the distribution of horizontal branch stars, implying that the cluster with a well-developed blue horizontal branch has bluer intrinsic integrated (B-V) color than that with yellow one. This paper describes the characteristics of currents around Hokkaido using a current vector map compiled by chasing the displacement of sea marks on a pair of successive thermal infrared images taken from a satellite, NOAA-6. The points of some sea surface patterns showing distinctive features which can be commonly identified in both images are called Sea Marks≓. This sea mark chase method≓ has a great advantage over velocity measurements by boats or buoys, in that it gives a synoptic view of the velocity distribution over a broad sea area extending for some hundreds of miles on a short time scale of half a day.In order to investigate the current in the late fall of 1981, we used the data taken at 19:05 JST on 30 October and at 7:20 JST on 31 October. With these data taken with a 12 hr difference, the measurement accuracy of the speed of sea marks reached ±0.1 knot through geometrical correction. The velocity vectors of sea marks agreed with results of GEK measurements performed on those days, and also with the mean current pattern obtained in the past based on sea surface data.The most distinct features recognized were some cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies of the order of 100 km in diameter which dominated in the Kuril Basin of the Okhotsk Sea. They appeared clearly in the original NOAA images and their physical parameters were determined quantitatively from the vector map. These eddies were located in the region of decay of the Soya Warm Current and were rotating at a speed nearly as large as that of the current. The problems of what feeds energy to these eddies and how long they live remain to be solved in future studies. 相似文献

Based on both major and trace element chemistry, the occurrence of the intergranular component in mantle-derived xenoliths from far eastern Russia has been constrained. Whole-rock trace element measurements of one xenolith show apparent negative anomalies in Ce, Th, and high field strength elements on normalized trace element patterns. The trace element pattern of the whole rock differs from those of constituent minerals, indicating that the anomalies in the whole rock are attributable to the presence of an intergranular component. That assumption was confirmed using in situ analysis of trace elements in the intergranular substance and melt inclusion using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry. Both the intergranular component and the melt inclusions have identical trace element patterns, which mean that these materials are a cognate metasomatizing agent. The anomalies are regarded as mantle metasomatism related to an aqueous fluid. Hydrous minerals were observed on the wall of the melt inclusions using micro-Raman spectroscopy, indicating that the melt inclusions contained a large amount of water. Thus, this study reveals a trace element composition of a hydrous metasomatizing agent in the mantle. 相似文献

We reanalyze the propagation of one-dimensional small-amplitude disturbances of given real frequency ω in a radiating and
scattering grey medium using the Eddington approximation, which has been studied previously by us (Kaneko et al., 1976). Numerical results reveals three frequency regimes to be distinguished, and two wave modes always appear in each frequency
regime. The governing equations and analytic solutions are derived for all wave modes using Whitham's method modified into
quadratic form and approximate methods based on radiation thermodynamics. In the high-frequency regime appear the radiation-wave
and adiabatic sound modes, which are damped by opacity and radiative cooling, respectively. Wave patterns in the intermediate-frequency
and low-frequency regimes depend critically on the importance of radiation, for which the criterion is given in terms of the
ratio of total specific heats at constant pressure and constant volume. When the radition overwhelms the matter (radiation-dominated
case), the radiative mode in the intermediate-frequency regime is the constant-volume diffusion mode. When the matter overwhelms
the radiation (matter-dominated case), damped radiation-wave and damped radiation-diffusion modes newly appear between the
radiation-wave and constant-volume diffusion modes. The acoustic mode in the intermediate-frequency regime is the isothermal
sound mode,which is damped by radiative cooling at higher frequencies and by radiation-thermal drag force at lower frequencies.
Two modes appearing in the low-frequency regime are the isentropic radiation-acoustic and constant-pressure diffusion modes.
The absorption coefficient derived for the former is shown to be a radiation-thermodynamic extension of that of Landau and
Lifshitz (1987). The transition frequencies between all adjacent two modes are also derived to discuss the implications of
them.
