A nitrate sensor has been set up to measure every 10 min the nitrate signal in a stream draining a small agricultural catchment dominated by fertilized crops during a 2‐year study period (2006–2008) in the south‐west of France. An in situ sampling protocol using automatic sampler to monitor flood events have been used to assume a point‐to‐point calibration of the sensor values. The nitrate concentration exhibits nonsystematic concentration and dilution effects during flood events. We demonstrate that the calibrated nitrate sensor signal gathered from the outlet is considered to be a continuous signal using the Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem. The objectives of this study are to quantify the errors generated by a typical infrequent sampling protocol and to design appropriate sampling strategy according to the sampling objectives. Nitrate concentration signal and flow data are numerically sampled to simulate common sampling frequencies. The total fluxes calculated from the simulated samples are compared with the reference value computed on the continuous signal. Uncertainties are increasing as sampling intervals increase; the method that is not using continuous discharge to compute nitrate fluxes bring larger uncertainty. The dispersion and bias computed for each sampling interval are used to evaluate the uncertainty during each hydrological period. High underestimation is made during flood periods when high‐concentration period is overlooked. On the contrary, high sampling frequencies (from 3 h to 1 day) lead to a systematic overestimation (bias around 3%): highest concentrations are overweighted by the interpolation of the concentration in such case. The in situ sampling protocol generates less than 1% of load estimation error and sample highest concentration peaks. We consider useful such newly emerging field technologies to assess short‐term variations of water quality parameters, to minimize the number of samples to be analysed and to assess the quality state of the stream at any time. This paper presents a vertically averaged model for studying water and solute exchanges between a large river and its adjacent alluvial aquifer. The hydraulic model couples horizontal 2D Saint Venant equations for river flow and a 2D Dupuit equation for aquifer flow. The dynamic coupling between river and aquifer is provided by continuity of fluxes and water level elevation between the two domains. Equations are solved simultaneously by linking the two hydrological system matrices in a single global matrix in order to ensure the continuity conditions between river and aquifer and to accurately model two‐way coupling between these two domains. The model is applied to a large reach (about 36 km2) of the Garonne River (south‐western France) and its floodplain, including an instrumented site in a meander. Simulated hydraulic heads are compared with experimental measurements on the Garonne River and aquifer in the floodplain. Model verification includes comparisons for one point sampling date (27 piezometers, 30 March 2000) and for hydraulic heads variations measured continuously over 5 months (5 piezometers, 1 January to 1 June 2000). The model accurately reproduces the strong hydraulic connections between the Garonne River and its aquifer, which are confirmed by the simultaneous variation of the water level in the river and in piezometers located near the river bank. The simulations also confirmed that the model is able to reproduce groundwater flow dynamics during flood events. Given these results, the hydraulic model was coupled with a solute‐transport component, based on advection‐dispersion equations, to investigate the theoretical dynamics of a conservative tracer over 5 years throughout the 36 km2 reach studied. Meanders were shown to favour exchanges between river and aquifer, and although the tracer was diluted in the river, the contamination moved downstream from the injection plots and affected both river banks. We derive a thermodynamic model useful for calculating the partitioning of gases in brine–oil closed systems. We assumed real binary mixtures of all components, and solved a set of equilibrium equations relating the solubility of gases in brines to the solubility of gases in petroleum liquids. We applied the model to understand the distribution of gases in the IEA-GHG Weyburn CO2 Monitoring and Storage Project, in Saskatchewan, Canada, throughout the first and second year after commencement of CO2 injection. Results indicate that a free-gas phase formed in the south-east of the field 363 days after injection, which increased in size and volume with time, but did not correlate with zones showing excess CO2 production. We also observed overlaps between areas of 13C depleted HCO3 and areas with free-vapor phase. We conclude that gas injection leads to short-term CO2 dissolution in liquids, followed by the creation of a CO2-rich vapor phase.  相似文献

We explore properties of close galaxy pairs and merging systems selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4 in different environments with the aim to assess the relative importance of the role of interactions over global environmental processes. For this purpose, we perform a comparative study of galaxies with and without close companions as a function of local density and host halo mass, carefully removing sources of possible biases. We find that at low- and high-local-density environments, colours and concentration indices of close galaxy pairs are very similar to those of isolated galaxies. At intermediate densities, we detect significant differences, indicating that close pairs could have experienced a more rapid transition on to the red sequence than isolated galaxies. The presence of a correlation between concentration index and colours indicates that the physical mechanism responsible for the colour transformation also operates in the transformation of the luminous matter distribution. At fixed local densities, we find a dependence of the red galaxy fraction on dark matter halo mass for galaxies with or without a close companion. This suggests the action of host halo mass related effects. Regardless of dark matter halo mass, we show that the percentage of red galaxies in close pairs and in the control sample are comparable at low- and high-local-density environments. However, at intermediate local densities, the gap in the red fraction between close pairs and the control galaxies increases from ∼10 per cent in low-mass haloes up to ∼50 per cent in the most massive ones. Interestingly, we also detect that 50 per cent of merging systems populate the intermediate local environments, with a large fraction of them being extremely red and bulge dominated. Our findings suggest that in intermediate-density environments galaxies are efficiently pre-processed by close encounters and mergers before entering higher local density regions.  相似文献

The optimization of photovoltaic solar power plants location in Atacama Desert, Chile, is presented in this study. The study considers three objectives: (1) Find sites with the highest solar energy potential, (2) determine sites with the least impact on the environment, and (3) locate the areas which produce small social impact. To solve this task, multi-criteria decision analyses (MCDAs) such as analytical hierarchy process and ordered weighted averaging were applied in a GIS environment. In addition, survey results of social impacts were analyzed and included into the decision-making process, including landscape values. The most suitable sites for solar energy projects were found near roads and power lines throughout the study area. Large suitable areas were found also from central valley from Arica and Parinacota to the north edge of Atacama region. In Atacama region, most suitable sites were found in the Andes. On the contrary, Andes were also found to have high environmental values and scenically valuable landscapes. Moderate and low suitability were found on the coast, especially in Atacama region. Factors such as slope and distance to power lines and roads influenced largely the sensitivity analysis. Area of high suitability increased by 15% when distance to roads was excluded and 18% when distance to power lines or slope was removed. MCDA-GIS method was found to be useful and applicable to the optimization of solar power plant locations in northern Chile.  相似文献

Major and trace elements, organic matter, carbonates, loss of ignition, grain size, gravel, sand, silt, clay, and qualitative mineralogical composition were determined on surficial marine sediments sampled during the stormy (February), dry (May), and rainy (September) seasons in the coastal area adjacent to Panuco River discharges into the Gulf of Mexico. The sediments supplied by the river move in a north-east direction, and are deposited in the north-east extreme of the studied area. Terrigenous sediments show a strong association of Al2O3 with Fe2O3, Na2O, K2O, P2O5, Rb, Cu, Zn, organic matter, clay, and grain size (Mz). Mineralogical analysis shows that they are formed by quartz, kaolinite, montmorillonite, illite-montmorillonite and biotite. The highest metal concentration of Cu (25 mg/kg), Zn (155 mg/kg), Pb (50 mg/kg) and organic matter (1.26%) was observed in the sampling points located very close to the river mouth. A statistical analysis was done with the information contained in the variables. Five significant factors explain 77% of the total variance: factor 1 is due to sediments from a terrigenous source, factor 2 corresponds to sediments from a biogenous source, factor 3 is associated to sediments with heavy minerals, factor 4 is due to Co concentration, and factor 5 is due to Ni concentration. The sediments supplied from the river had a short-term local impact on the sediment distribution, as observed by the carbonate and heavy mineral concentration of the sediments.  相似文献

Epizonal igneous and metamorphic rocks in northwestern Argentina are exposed in the Sierra de Paiman. The metamorphic rocks are quartzites, phyllites, and slates with soft-body impressions and fossil traces that suggest a late Precambrian-Cambrian age. The igneous rocks were intruded during two major magmatic events according to K---Ar and Rb---Sr data. The older event is represented by different kinds of granitoids and gabbroids, intruded 437–459 Ma. These rocks were emplaced syntectonically in a shear zone that remained active after emplacement, causing extensive mylonitization on the east side of the range. The granitoids show Sr isotopic disturbances possibly related to magma mixing events. Petrologic, geochemical, and isotopic data for these rocks suggest a volcanic-arc setting, probably related to the back arc of the eastward-dipping continental arc of the Famatina Belt. During the younger event (ca. 379 Ma) stocks and dikes of leucogranites were emplaced post-tectonically with respect to the last episode of mylonitization. The leucogranites have syn-collisional signatures and may thus represent the culmination of the volcanic arc of the Famatina Belt.  相似文献

Over 330 bulk chemical analyses of rocks (Oligocene or Miocene to Recent) from the Mexican Volcanic Belt (MVB) have been compiled. These analyses all together represent a calc-alkaline sequence of continental margin type. The North-Eastern part of the Belt seems to overlap with another volcanic province, namely. Eastern Cordillera in which magmas are mostly of alkaline sequence. A model involving fractional crystallization as the principal mechanism is proposed for magma genesis in the MVB.  相似文献

Climate drives ecosystem processes and impacts biodiversity. Biodiversity patterns over large areas, such as Canada's boreal, can be monitored using indirect indicators derived from remotely sensed imagery. In this paper, we characterized the historical space–time relationships between climate and a suite of indirect indicators of biodiversity, known as the Dynamic Habitat Index (DHI) to identify where climate variability is co-occurring with changes in biodiversity indicators. We represented biodiversity using three indirect indicators generated from 1987 to 2007 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer images. By quantifying and clustering temporal variability in climate data, we defined eight homogeneous climate variability zones, where we then analyzed the DHI. Results identified unique areas of change in climate, such as the Hudson Plains, that explain significant variations in DHI. Past variability in temperatures and growing season index had a strong influence on observed vegetation productivity and seasonality changes throughout Canada's boreal. Variation in precipitation, for most of the area, was not associated with DHI changes. The methodology presented here enables assessment of spatial–temporal relationships between biodiversity and climate variability and characterizes distinctive zones of variation that may be used for prioritization and planning to ensure long-term biodiversity conservation in Canada.  相似文献

Lithostratigraphic and structural framework, chronology and geochemistry of the Tertiary calc-alkaline volcanism of Cap-d'Ail (French Maritime Alps) are specified according to the new data collected during the earthworks of the recent railway tunnel built between Cap-d'Ail and Monaco.
