Interferometry in the optical and near infrared has so far played a marginal role in Extragalactic Astronomy. Active Galactic Nuclei are the brightest and most compact extragalactic sources, nonetheless only a very limited number could be studied with speckle interferometry and none with long baseline interferometry. The VLTI will allow the study of moderately faint extragalactic objects with very high spatial resolution thus opening a new window on the universe. With this paper we focus on three scientific cases to show how AMBER and MIDI can be used to tackle open issues in extragalactic astronomy. We present an efficient scheme to compute high-frequency seismograms (up to 10 Hz) forSH-waves in a horizontally stratified medium with the mode summation method. The formalism which permits the computation of eigenvalues, eigenfunctions and related integral quantities is discussed in detail. Anelasticity is included in the model by using the variational method. Phase velocity, group velocity, energy integral and attenuation spectra of a structure enable the computation of complete strong motion seismograms, which are the basic tool for the interpretation of near-source broad-band data.Different examples computed for continental structures are discussed, where one example is the comparison between the observed transversal displacement recorded at station IVC for the November 4, Brawley 1976 earthquake and synthetic signals. In the case of a magnitudeM L =5.7 earthquake in the Friuli seismic area we apply the mode summation method to infer from waveform modeling of all three components of motion of observed data some characteristics of the source.On leave from Institute of Geophysics, ETH, Zürich, Switzerland.  相似文献

The aridity of the Arabian Peninsula's deserts ranges between arid to hyperarid with hot dry climate, scarce precipitation and sparse vegetation. These harsh environmental conditions enhance some geomorphologic processes more than others, cause specific geotechnical problems, and increase desertification.From west to east, the general physiography of Saudi Arabia shows the Red Sea coastal plains and the escarpment foothills called Tihama followed by the Arabian Shield mountains, the Arabian Shelf plateau and finally the Arabian Gulf coastal plains. Sand moves by wind either as drifting sand or migrating dunes in four major sand seas, over the Arabian Shelf, and in the inter-mountain valleys, in the Arabian Shield causing problems of erosion and deposition. Human activities in the deserts may cause more instability to the sand bodies, enlarging the magnitude of the problem. Fine silty soil particles also move by wind, depositing loess mainly in selected areas downwind in the Tihama. These loess deposits subside and may form earth fissures by the process of hydrocompaction upon wetting. The addition of water can be either natural through storms or man-made through human agricultural or civil activities. Extensive sabkhas exist along the coastal plains of both the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf. The sabkha soil may also heave by salt re-crystallization or collapse by wetting. The shallow groundwater brines present in sabkhas also attack and corrode civil structures. Urbanization and excessive groundwater pumping may also deplete the fresh groundwater resources and may cause subsidence, ground fissuring and surface faulting as observed in some locations in the Arabian Shield. Although the average annual precipitation is very low, rain usually falls in the form of torrential storms, collected by dry valley basins and causing floods to unprotected downstream areas on the coastal plains of the Red Sea.The desert environment, being a fragile echo system, needs to be treated with care. Intercommunications between different national and international agencies and education of the layman should help to keep the system balanced and reduce the resulting environmental hazards. In addition, any suggested remedial measures should be planned with nature and engineered with natural materials.  相似文献

本文提出了一种新的研究全球气候温度变化的思路。为发现全球气候变化的宏观规律,把生物圈系统作为一个整体的物质进行研究,从而把纷繁复杂的全球气候温度变化问题归纳成经典物理学的热量与温度变化问题。给出了广义生物圈的热平衡测量Q值和温度变化的热力学公式,并在实际数据的基础上通过计算发现人类使用矿物燃料和核能所排放的热量理论上可使全球海平面每年升高35 mm或者可使大气对流层温度每年升高011 ℃。该发现表明:能源热量因素已成为影响全球温度变化的重要因素。  相似文献

众多研究人员在网络GIS的研究方面都习惯将其内容简单化为WebGIS或者Internet/Intranet GIS。实际上,WebGIS和Internet/Intranet GIS在数据模型、网络架构、体系构建和功能部署等方面都有较大的区别,这种将We-bGIS和Internet/Intranet GIS统称为网络GIS的做法本身就有缺陷。本文以网络和分布式计算技术为基础,从“广义”和“狭义”的角度对网络GIS的概念框架、内容体系和应用等几个方面做了重构研究,以期推动网络GIS的研究进展。  相似文献

Linking spatial variations of throughfall with shifting patterns during forest succession is important for understanding developmental patterns of ecosystem function. However, no such approach has been previously used for the chronosequence of evergreen broad‐leaved forests in subtropical regions. This study was conducted in a chronosequence of secondary forest succession in Tiantong National Forest Park, to determine the optimum number of collectors within certain limits of error. Throughfall was 66, 55 and 77% of gross precipitation in an early‐succession (SS), sub‐climax (SE) and climax (CE) forest, respectively. The coefficient of variations (CV) of throughfall reduced with increasing rainfall amounts. Monte Carlo resampling approach was used to find mean values and 90 and 95% confidence intervals of a variable number of collectors (n) ranging from 2 to 24. During the study period, with nine collectors at SS, five at SE and five at CE, the error in the mean individual throughfall did not exceed 10%, respectively. This error was reduced to 5% when using 16, 10 and 10 collectors at SS, SE and CE, respectively. The CVs decreased greatly with increasing sample size when the sample size was less than 16 for the three successional stages, regardless of rainfall amounts. Based on the Student's t‐value analysis of the mean individual throughfall volumes, a sample size of 16 at SS, five at SE and four at CE would be enough for throughfall estimates at an accepted error of 10% of 95% confidence level, respectively. Therefore, we concluded that the 25 of collectors used in the present study were sufficient to estimate the throughfall value at an accepted error of 10% at 90 and 95% confidence levels, even for those small rainfalls in eastern China. ABSTRACT

A vital component of fire detection from remote sensors is the accurate estimation of the background temperature of an area in fire's absence, assisting in identification and attribution of fire activity. New geostationary sensors increase the data available to describe background temperature in the temporal domain. Broad area methods to extract the expected diurnal cycle of a pixel using this temporally rich data have shown potential for use in fire detection. This paper describes an application of a method for priming diurnal temperature fitting of imagery from the Advanced Himawari Imager. The BAT method is used to provide training data for temperature fitting of target pixels, to which thresholds are applied to detect thermal anomalies in 4?μm imagery over part of Australia. Results show the method detects positive thermal anomalies with respect to the diurnal model in up to 99% of cases where fires are also detected by Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellite active fire products. In absence of LEO active fire detection, but where a burned area product recorded fire-induced change, this method also detected anomalous activity in up to 75% of cases. Potential improvements in detection time of up to 6?h over LEO products are also demonstrated.  相似文献
