Abstract— We determined He, Ne, Ar, 10Be, 26Al, 36Cl, and 14C concentrations, as well as cosmic-ray track densities and halogen concentrations in different specimens of the H6 chondrite Torino, in order to constrain its exposure history to cosmic radiation. The Torino meteoroid had a radius of ~20 cm and travelled in interplanetary space for 2.5–10 Ma. Earlier, Torino was part of a larger body. The smallest possible precursor had a radius of 55 cm and a journey through space longer than ~65 Ma. If the first-stage exposure took place in a body with a radius of >3 m or in the parent asteroid, then it lasted nearly 300 Ma. The example of Torino shows that it is easy to underestimate first-stage exposure ages when constructing two-stage histories.  相似文献

High-resolution spectroscopic observations of asteroids Ceres and Pallas have been obtained in the 1.0- to 2.6-μm region. Combined with previous spectralmeasurements at other wavelengths, this work presents the broadband spectral reflectances of these asteroids over the 0.4 to 3.6-um region. This extended coverage permits new analyses of the surface mineralogies of these objects. Using laboratory comparison spectra of meteorites and mixtures of terrestrial minerals, the surfaces of Ceres and Pallas are consistent with mixtures of opaques and hydrated silicates, such as are found in types C1 and C2 meteorites. This research emphasizes the importance of the 3-um spectral region for studying by remote methods the relationship of carbonaceous chondrite mineralogies to asteroid surfaces.  相似文献

A high-resolution (0.6 cm?1) spectrum of Jupiter at 5 μm recorded at the Kuiper Airborne Observatory is used to determine upper limits to the column density of 19 molecules. The upper limits to the mixing ratios of SiH4, H2S, HCN, and simple hydrocarbons are discussed with respect to current models of Jupiter's atmosphere. These upper limits are compared to expectations based upon the solar abundance of the elements. This analysis permits upper limit measurements (SiH4), or actual detections (GeH4), of molecules with mixing ratios with hydrogen as low as 10?9. In future observations at 5 μm the sensitivity of remote spectroscopic analyses should permit the study of constituents with mixing ratios as low as 10?10, which would include the hydrides of such elements as Sn and As as well as numerous organic molecules.  相似文献

Lateral moraines constructed along west to east sloping outlet glaciers from mountain centred, pre-last glacial maximum (LGM) ice fields of limited extent remain largely preserved in the northern Swedish landscape despite overriding by continental ice sheets, most recently during the last glacial. From field evidence, including geomorphological relationships and a detailed weathering profile including a buried soil, we have identified seven such lateral moraines that were overridden by the expansion and growth of the Fennoscandian ice sheet. Cosmogenic 10Be and 26Al exposure ages of 19 boulders from the crests of these moraines, combined with the field evidence, are correlated to episodes of moraine stabilisation, Pleistocene surface weathering, and glacial overriding. The last deglaciation event dominates the exposure ages, with 10Be and 26Al data derived from 15 moraine boulders indicating regional deglaciation 9600 ± 200 yr ago. This is the most robust numerical age for the final deglaciation of the Fennoscandian ice sheet. The older apparent exposure ages of the remaining boulders (14,600-26,400 yr) can be explained by cosmogenic nuclide inheritance from previous exposure of the moraine crests during the last glacial cycle. Their potential exposure history, based on local glacial chronologies, indicates that the current moraine morphologies formed at the latest during marine oxygen isotope stage 5. Although numerous deglaciation ages were obtained, this study demonstrates that numerical ages need to be treated with caution and assessed in light of the geomorphological evidence indicating moraines are not necessarily formed by the event that dominates the cosmogenic nuclide data.  相似文献

Short‐term (contemporary) and long‐term denudation rates were determined for the Blue Mountains Plateau in the western Sydney Basin, Australia, to explore the role of extreme events (wildfires and catastrophic floods) in landscape denudation along a passive plate margin. Contemporary denudation rates were reconstructed using 40 years of river sediment load data from the Nattai catchment in the south‐west of the basin, combined with an analysis of hillslope erosion following recent wildfires. Long‐term denudation rates (10 kyr–10 Myr) were determined from terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides, apatite fission track thermochronology and post‐basalt flow valley incision. Contemporary denudation rates average several times lower than the long‐term average (5·5 ± 4 mm kyr?1 versus 21·5 ± 7 mm kyr?1). Erosion of sediment following wildfires accounts for only a small proportion (5%) of the contemporary rate. Most post‐fire sediment is stored on the lower slopes and valley floor, with the amount transported to the river network dependent on rainfall–run‐off conditions within the first few years following the fire. Historical catastrophic floods account for a much larger proportion (35%) of the contemporary erosion rate, and highlight the importance of these events in reworking stored material. Evidence for palaeofloods much larger than those experienced over the past 200 years suggests even greater sediment export potential. Mass movement on hillslopes along valleys incised into softer lithology appears to be a dominant erosion process that supplies substantial volumes of material to the valley floor. It is possible that a combination of infrequent mass movement events and high fluvial discharge could account for a significant proportion of the discrepancy between the contemporary and long‐term denudation rates. The mineralogical composition of asteroid Eros has been determined from its infrared spectrum (0.9–2.7μm; 28cm?1 resolution). Major minerals include metallic NiFe and pyroxene; no spectroscopic evidence for olivine or plagioclase feldspar was found. Summary This study uses a 1°×1° lat/long dataset, extracted from ECMWF re-analyses for the 15-year period 1979–1993 (ERA-15), to diagnose the synoptic-scale kinematic, thermodynamic and moisture environments in the vicinity of named tropical cyclones (TCs) in the eastern North Pacific. Based on the NCDC best track dataset, TCs are partitioned into one of three categories: weak (W), strong (S) or intensifying (I). In total, 63TCs are examined: 8Ws and 20Is at point A (maximum intensification) and 11Ws, 13Ss and 11Is at point B (maximum frequency). Composite maps are compiled for all five groups, and six individual case studies are examined, four for extreme TC cases and two for cases involving dry air intrusions.For the most part, peak values and patterns of composited ERA-15 variables display circulation, thermodynamic and moisture characteristics that are compatible with the strength represented by a groups classification. Intercomparison between Ws and Is at points A and B yielded larger conditional instability of low-level air parcels and upper-level outflow within the region of maximum intensification (point A).The intrusions of dry versus moist mid-level air are addressed for each storm with the assistance of 72-hour backward trajectories. Trajectory density maps indicate two preferred paths of air parcels that reach the environment of W storms at point A on the 700 and 500hPa levels. The first one crossed Central America in the region of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and the second one south of the Central American mountains. Several storms revealed that these trajectories were associated with dry air intrusions into the larger storm area, and this might be one reason for their weak status at point A. One documented example is Kevin (1985). By the time it reached point B, the dry air was replaced by air that was moist and Kevin intensified, although it remained a W system. In contrast, Narda (1989) received a dry air intrusion from Central Mexico at 500hPa as a weak storm at point B and did not intensify. Despite possible analyses problems, the documentation in this study of mid-level dry air intrusions into eastern Pacific TCs from the Mexican-Central American region suggests a hitherto unexploited forecast potential. Summary This paper investigates tropical-extratropical interactions over the northwestern Pacific Ocean that involve tropical cyclones and subtropical jet streaks. Another aspect of this study is to examine the relation between 6–25 day convective variability and tropical cyclones. This investigation is conducted for the fall and early winter season, with a focus on the months, October through December (OND). In addition to outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) data, we use 10 years (1985–1994) of WCRP/TOGA archive II analyses produced by ECMWF to compute equivalent temperature, e , precipitable water, W, and kinematic and kinetic energy transfer variables. These variables are composited for two classes of tropical cyclones, recurving cyclones (RCs) and non-recurving cyclones (NCRs), in order to examine the influence of tropical cyclones and baroclinic processes on changes in the jet streak intensity.We found that RCs interacted with extratropical regions during all composite days. A strong baroclinic zone developed throughout the troposphere on the north side of the composite cyclone as it propagated poleward. Between the day of recurvature, DR, and the day after recurvature, DR+1, the main band of convection shifted from the RC to a frontal band within the baroclinic zone indicating a transformation of the tropical cyclone into an extratropical one. An eastward propagating jet streak at 200 hPa, located north of the RC and in the vicinity of the baroclinic zone, increased its speed from 57 ms–1 to 79 ms–1 on DR+1. Although we could not measure the role of baroclinic processes in this regard, we were able to infer that upper-level outflow from the RC did supply momentum and energy to the jet streak.Whereas we expected tropical-extratropical interactions for the RCs, we also found evidence that NRCs that stay south of 20° N throughout their lifetime and that dissipate over Indo-China have an influence on the subtropical jet by their upper-level outflow, especially in the late OND season. The tropical (i.e., momentum) forcing did appear to cause increases in the speed of the jet after the composited storm crossed the Phillippines on the fourth day of its life cycle, D4. Concurrently, a baroclinic zone developed along the coast of southern China by about D4, but it was confined to the lower troposphere.Finally, our spectral analysis investigations for the northwestern Pacific showed significant peaks at 6–10 days and 15–20 days from late September to early December. The first peak is well known and is associated with typhoon activity. In several of the investigated autumn seasons (1987, 1989, 1992, and 1993), the second peak was clearly related to the recurrence interval of northwestern Pacific tropical cyclones. This result is in accordance with the findings of Hartmann et al. (1992). For some years of the investigation period (1985, 1986, and 1988), however, our results showed that westward propagating convective disturbances that fail to reach tropical depression strength also contribute to the power in the 15–25 day band, whereas in a few years (1990 and 1991), no OLR peak between 15 and 20 days could be found at all. Therefore, it appears that further work needs to be done with regard to the relationship between convective systems and their accompanying relationships on time scales ranging between 10 and 25 days.With 15 Figures  相似文献

This paper presents the first compilation of information on the spatial distribution of scleractinian cold-water corals in the Gulf of Cádiz based on literature research and own observations (video footage, sediment samples). Scleractinian cold-water corals are widely distributed along the Spanish and Moroccan margins in the Gulf of Cádiz, where they are mainly associated with mud volcanoes, diapiric ridges, steep fault escarpments, and coral mounds. Dendrophyllia cornigera, Dendrophyllia alternata, Eguchipsammia cornucopia, Madrepora oculata and Lophelia pertusa are the most abundant reef-forming species. Today, they are almost solely present as isolated patches of fossil coral and coral rubble. The absence of living scleractinian corals is likely related to a reduced food supply caused by low productivity and diminished tidal effects. In contrast, during the past 48 kyr scleractinian corals were abundant in the Gulf of Cádiz, although their occurrence demonstrates no relationship with main climatic or oceanographic changes. Nevertheless, there exists a conspicuous relationship when the main species are considered separately. Dendrophylliids are associated with periods of relatively stable and warm conditions. The occurrence of L. pertusa mainly clusters within the last glacial when bottom current strength in the Gulf of Cádiz was enhanced and long-term stable conditions existed in terms of temperature. Madrepora oculata shows a higher tolerance to abrupt environmental changes.  相似文献
