Summary The paper presents an overview of the influence of street architecture on the wind and turbulence patterns in street canyons and discusses the effects on local air quality. The findings of recent experimental and numerical studies are summarized and wind-tunnel data sets are presented that illustrate the flow-field variability. It is shown that small-scale features of the street architecture play an important role. The formation of a vortex inside the street canyon is affected by the roof configuration. In shorter street canyons, the flow component along the street becomes important for pollutant transport. These results are of importance for urban air quality modeling in particular when dealing with pollution problems caused by road traffic. Furthermore, the findings should be taken into account in fast response models that are used to assess critical areas in the case of accidental or non-accidental releases of hazardous material in urban areas.  相似文献

The groups of nitrogen components that contribute most to the eutrophication of the sea are ammonia, nitrogen oxides and their respective reaction products. The emission of ammonia is mainly from animal husbandry, whereas the emission of nitrogen oxides is mainly from combustion processes. Ammonia reacts in the atmosphere to form particulate ammonium. Nitrogen oxides react to form nitric acid, nitrous acid, particulate nitrate and peroxyacetyl nitrate. The various nitrogen components have different physical and chemical properties. Therefore, their dry and wet deposition velocities differ. The dry deposition velocity of gas to the sea depends on its solubility, reactivity, concentration in seawater and the wind speed. The dry deposition velocity of a particle depends on its size and the wind speed. The wet removal rate is a function of meteorological conditions. For a gas it further depends on the solubility and reactivity of the gas. For a particle, it further depends on the particle's ability to act as a condensation nucleus for particles. The total deposition of ammonia and its reaction products to the North Sea is about 140 kt N a−1. The total deposition of nitrogen oxides and their reaction products is about 200 kt N a−1.  相似文献

Scaling velocities relevant for turbulent flows in the planetary boundary layer are discussed. It is suggested that the scaling parameters should be determined by integrated bulk properties of the respective turbulent production terms. According to this concept, a new velocity scale, replacing the friction velocityu*, is proposed depending on bothu* and the geostrophic windu g . The convective velocity scalew* can be determined by the integral of the buoyancy production term and is therefore an appropriate velocity scale. Examination of Minnesota and Kansas data shows that these data do not give the possibility of verifying whether the new scaling velocity is more appropriate thanu*. This is because the range of variability of atmospheric stability during the field measurements is too small. However, theoretical considerations based on integrated properties of the turbulence, through the depth of the planetary boundary layer, are given in support of the new scaling velocity.  相似文献

Passive dew collection experiments were initiated in late 2003 in the centre of The Netherlands within a grassland area. A specially designed 1 m2 insulated planar dew collector, set at a 30° angle from horizontal, was covered with a thin (0.39 mm) polyethylene foil and subsequently replaced with 4 mm polyvinyl chloride. A second dew collector, in the shape of an inverted pyramid, was constructed to reduce the view angle to only the nighttime sky. A simple surface energy-budget model and an aerodynamic model were used to simulate the dew collected by both collectors. The planar collector collected about 90% of the dew at the grass cover while the pyramid collector collected about 1.20% of the grass cover. The aerodynamic model was able to predict the amount of collector data to within 50% for the planar collector and 60% for the inverted pyramid collector. The pyramid collector design was able to collect about 20% more dew than the inclined planar collector.  相似文献

A comprehensive dataset on dispersion behind rectangular buildings has been used to analyse the performance of two dispersion models in respect to their handling of building effects: the Danish OML model and the US AERMOD model with the PRIME building algorithm; additionally, the German MISKAM model has been assessed. OML and AERMOD are regulatory plume models with limited requirements in terms of input and computing resources, whereas MISKAM is a computational fluid dynamical model, and as such much more demanding. For most scenarios considered, the degree of misprediction in respect to the maximum concentrations is less than a factor of two for OML and AERMOD. However, in respect to the concentration at a specific location, especially in the near field, both models often result in larger mispredictions. MISKAM provides more accurate predictions.  相似文献

The rate of diffusion of a cloud depends on cloud dimensions. As the cloud enlarges, larger eddies come into play and the rate of diffusion increases. The turbulent diffusion process is scale-dependent. The gradient-transfer theory (K-theory) is only appropriate when the dimensions of the dispersed material are much larger than the size of the turbulent eddies. Introduction of a spectral turbulent diffusivity function (STD) makes it possible to treat the diffusive transport in a Eulerian system, with diffusivity effectively dependent on the actual size of the concentration distribution. The basic innovation is that diffusion is treated in the Fourier space and the diffusion coefficient is dependent on the wave number of the Fourier components of the concentration distribution. It is shown that the concept of the wave-number-dependent diffusivity leads to a non-local flux-gradient relation.  相似文献

The study deals with local airflow patterns induced by 12–16 m high, partly vegetated dunes, under various prevailing wind conditions. Detailed empirical data were derived by means of an unconventional use of directional raingauges. The utility and accuracy of the method have been previously tested in a combined empirical and numerical study over ridges on a similar scale. Results are presented on the nature, extent and intensity of locally modified patterns of surface flow and on their dependence on wind conditions and slope inclination. Results may serve to verify or refine existing perceptions or models of the flow affecting sand movement over dunes. For example, deflected surface wind flow and even stationary vortices were found to form under winds with resultant angles of incidence of only 5–10° relative to the axes of the dunes, and on slopes inclined only 12–15°, i.e. lower angles than often assumed in previous studies of dune morphology. Various effects of the resulting surface flow on the dune ecosystem are also referred to, e.g. the distribution of settling dust and seed dispersal. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

It is not always easy to know, post-facto, whether both dewfall and fog may have occurred over a given evening period. Instrumentation limitations make it difficult to quantify dew deposition since they rely on artificial sensing surfaces that are either visually examined on a daily basis or recorded. In arid to Mediterranean regions, both dew and fog can play significant ecological roles as suppliers of moisture. Long-term observation records of dew and fog in such regions tend to be limited, however, due partly to a lack of interest and limited distribution of well-instrumented meteorological stations. Simple meteorological criteria are suggested here to calculate potential dewfall and to indicate whether fog was likely to have occurred over a given evening. A field campaign was carried out in the NW Negev desert, Israel, in September and October 1997, to collect meteorological data and carry out dewfall measurements.  相似文献

Acoustic sounder measurements of the stable boundary-layer height taken during the EPRI Plume Model Validation and Development Project experiment are examined. Comparison of simultaneous measurements by two sodars located 15 km apart shows good agreement. Several widely used diagnostic formulas for estimation of the boundary-layer height, based on wind speed and surface-layer parameters, such as friction velocity and Monin-Obukhov length, are tested against the sodar data. Of these, best performance is found using a simple linear relationship with friction velocity or, alternatively, wind speed at 10 m height. No evidence is found to support the more often used Zilitinkevich (1972) formula. Tests using selected data from the Cabauw site in the Netherlands confirm the results found on the basis of EPRI data.  相似文献
