This study investigates the altitudinal variation of dominant modes of summer monsoon intra-seasonal oscillation (ISO) over the Northwest (NWH) and Eastern Himalayan (EH) region using (i) spatially scattered 133 number of station rainfall observations and (ii) latitudinal transect-wise (LT) rainfall variation, obtained from an observed interpolated gridded rainfall data for the period 1995–2004. The altitudinal variation of dominant modes of monsoon ISO were investigated by exploring the strong and weak phases of the principal components of 10–90 days bandpass rainfall data of June to September with respect to location specific station height. Investigation of frequency of days for light and moderate rainfall along with the occurrence of total seasonal rainy days has revealed existence of a rainfall maximum around 2100 m height for the NWH region. Similarly, the total seasonal rainy days of EH region was found to have maxima between 1100 and 1400 m height. Analyses of the spatially scattered station rainfall observation for the NWH region showed that the strong periods of ISO modes exist around 747.9 (±131.7) m and 2227.2 (±100.2) m heights. Over the EH region, the dominant modes of the monsoon ISO were found to be centred around 1200 m. Significant alterations of strong and weak phases of monsoon ISO as a response to altitudinal variation in the mountain surface were observed when latitudinal transect-wise variation of monsoon ISO modes were investigated.  相似文献

In this paper, an experimental micromechanical study is presented investigating the contact mechanics and tribological behaviour of highly/completely decomposed tuff granules. The parent material was taken from two locations—named the top and bottom—from a recent landslide in Hong Kong, and in this study the tested granules were obtained from the parent material after drying and sieving processes. Basic material characterisation was conducted quantifying the particle shape, the surface roughness and the strength of a set of grains. A set of twenty-nine monotonic inter-particle shearing tests were conducted on pairs of granules taken from the top and bottom of the landslide. It was found that the granules had very high friction angles at their contacts, in general greater in comparison with other materials reported in the literature. The slightly greater inter-particle friction for the granules taken from the top of the landslide might be because of their higher roughness in comparison with the ones from the bottom. Additional experiments were conducted to investigate the normal and tangential load–displacement response of the granules subjected to cyclic loading. A good curve fitting for the normal load–displacement response could be obtained by using very low apparent Young’s moduli in the Hertzian model. In general, the decomposed tuff granules showed significant plastic response during the first normal load cycle, and this plastic behaviour continued for the subsequent third and fourth cycles. In the cyclic inter-particle shearing tests, the nonlinearity and hysteresis increased for larger cyclic displacements, but the effect of the number of shearing cycles on the energy loss was generally small. Finally, a limited discussion is presented on the applicability of a theoretical model on the tangential load–displacement behaviour of the granules.  相似文献

Examined in this paper is the tentative history of the depositional flux of230Thxs (the unsupported fraction of230Th scavenged from the overlying water column), for the Late Quaternary period from a sediment core of the Central Indian Basin (CIB). The measured depositional flux of230Thxs is found substantially higher than that of the possible theoretical flux from the overlying water column. Historical records, reconstructed from the230Thxs chronology suggests that the depositional flux has varied considerably with time, reflecting an enhanced scavenging during the Holocene and the preceding interglacial periods whereas, comparatively lower flux than the predicted one occurred during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) period. The average ratio of the measured depositional flux to that of the predicted flux from the overlying water column, indicates that the core site acts as a sink for230Thxs and based on the existence of bottom current activity; the230Thxs could be the result of focusing of younger sediments. The depositional index (Di) has also been calculated to quantify the extent of lateral supply throughout the core with time. The estimated (Di) suggests that bottom focusing and feeble deposition and/or winnowing processes had occurred and that the former was most prevalent during the Holocene and the preceding interglacials, whereas the latter was observed at the LGM period.  相似文献

The activity concentration and the gamma-absorbed dose rates of the terrestrial naturally occurring radionuclides (232Th, 226Ra and 40K) were determined in soil samples collected from ten different locations of Sirsa district of Haryana, using HPGe detector based on high-resolution gamma spectrometry system. The range of activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in the soil samples from the studied areas varies from 19.18 Bq kg−1 (Moriwala) to 40.31 Bq kg−1 (Rori), 59.43 Bq kg−1 (Pipli) to 89.54 Bq kg−1 (Fatehpur) and 223.22 Bq kg−1 (Moriwala) to 313.32 Bq kg−1 (SamatKhera) with overall mean values of 27.94, 72.75 and 286.73 Bq kg−1 respectively. The absorbed dose rate calculated from activity concentration of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K ranges between 8.84 and 18.58, 37.02 and 55.78, and 9.24 and 12.97 nGy h−1, respectively. The total absorbed dose in the study area ranges from 60.40 to 82.15 nGy h−1 with an average value of 70.12 nGy h−1. The calculated values of external hazard index (H ex) for the soil samples of the study area range from 0.36 to 0.49 with an average value of 0.42.  相似文献

The tree root distribution pattern and biomass of seventeen year old trees of Grewia optiva, Morus alba, Celtis australis, Bauhinia variegata and Robinia pseudoacacia were studied by excavation method. B. variegata roots penetrated to a maximum depth of 4.78 m, whereas, M. alba roots were found down to 1.48 m depth. Lateral spread was minimum in B. variegata (1.10 m)and maximum inR. pseudoacacia (7.33 m). Maximum root biomass of 6.30 kg was found in R. pseudoacacia and minimum (2.43 kg) was found in M. alba. For four species viz.,G. optiva, M. alba, C. australis andR. pseudoacacia, 68%-87% root biomass occurred within top 0-30 cm soil depth, but forB. variegata this was only45%. The soil binding factor was maximum in G. optiva and minimum in B. variegata. Soil physico-chemical properties also showed wide variation. The study suggests thatB. variegata with a deep root system is the most suitable species for plantation under agroforestry systems. R. pseudoacacia and G. optiva with deep root systems, more lateral spread and high soil binding factor are suitable for plantation on degraded lands for soil conservation.  相似文献

The differences and similarities in atmospheric boundary-layer (ABL) characteristics, in particular the ABL height, evolution and wind field, between two contrasting episodes of the Indian summer monsoon have been studied using measurements from wind profilers and an instrumented 50-m tower at Gadanki in India. The observed differences are discussed in light of various forcing mechanisms, in particular the effect of soil moisture on the surface energy balance and ABL. The differences in ABL height, its evolution and the wind field between episodes are quite pronounced. Wet episodes not only have a shallower ABL but also the growth is delayed by 1–4 h when compared with that for dry episodes. Abundant soil moisture during the wet episodes (a factor of two greater than during the dry episodes) reduces the buoyancy flux, and thereby not only limits the ABL height but also delays the commencement of ABL growth. The low-level jet (LLJ) is stronger during the dry episodes and has a larger diurnal range than during the wet episodes. The highest occurrence and magnitude of LLJ apparent at a height of 1.5 km during early morning hours shift progressively with height and time till the afternoon, following ABL evolution. The weaker LLJ during the wet episodes is attributed to its southward migration from its mean position (15 \(^{\circ }\) N). Larger signal-to-noise ratio and spectral width values are observed during the early night to midnight, compared to noon-time, when the ABL is buoyantly turbulent.  相似文献
