Abstract

In this first paper in a set of two, the problem of estimating missing segments in streamflow records is described. The group approach, different from the traditional single-valued approach, is proposed and explained. The approach perceives the hydrological data as sequence of groups rather than single-valued observations. The techniques suggested to handle the group approach are regression, time series analysis, partitioning modelling, and artificial neural networks. Pertinent literature is reviewed and background material is used to support the group approach. Implementation and comparisons of models' performance are deferred to the second paper.  相似文献

In this paper, the feasibility of using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to study water infiltration into a heterogeneous soil is examined, together with its difficulties and limitations. MRI studies of ponded water infiltration into an undisturbed soil core show that the combination of one- and two-dimensional imaging techniques provides a visual and non-destructive means of monitoring the temporal changes of soil water content and the moisture profile, and the movement of the wetting front. Two-dimensional images show air entrapment in repetitive ponded infiltration experiments. During the early stages of infiltration, one-dimensional images of soil moisture profiles clearly indicate preferential flow phenomena. The observed advance of wetting fronts can be described by a linear relationship between the square root of infiltration time (√t) and the distance of the wetting front from the soil surface. Similarly, the cumulative infiltration is also directly proportional to √t. Furthermore, from the MRI infiltration moisture profiles, it is possible to estimate the parameters that feature in infiltration equations. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Abstract

A trial is made to explore the applicability of chaos analysis outside the commonly reported analysis of a single chaotic time series. Two cross-correlated streamflows, the Little River and the Reed Creek, Virginia, USA, are analysed with regard to the chaotic behaviour. Segments of missing data are assumed in one of the time series and estimated using the other complete time series. Linear regression and artificial neural network models are employed. Two experiments are conducted in the analysis: (a) fitting one global model and (b) fitting multiple local models. Each local model is in the direct vicinity of the missing data. A nonlinear noise reduction method is used to reduce the noise in both time series and the two experiments are repeated. It is found that using multiple local models to estimate the missing data is superior to fitting one global model with regard to the mean squared error and the mean relative error of the estimated values. This result is attributed to the chaotic behaviour of the streamflows under consideration.  相似文献

Abstract

The group approach that treats hydrological data as groups rather than as single-valued observations was proposed in a companion paper. Various models representing four techniques are briefly presented and applied to single series and bi-series cases, respectively, in this paper. The techniques represented by these models are regression, time series analysis, partitioning modelling, and artificial neural networks. The utility of the models for estimating missing streamflow data using the group approach is investigated. It turns out that the group approach is valid for estimating missing values, and possibly other applications, when data are significantly auto-correlated.  相似文献

The Namurian black shales studied have a good palaeontological control. Pyrite, illite and organic matter are higher in the marine shales, and siderite and kaolinite are higher in the non-marine shales. The distribution of the diagenetic iron minerals is attributed to anionic activities controlled by salinity. The same control could account for the observed clay-mineral distribution by differential flocculation. The major element geochemistry closely reflects the above mineral variation. Mn and Zr are higher in the non-marine shales due to siderite and zircon respectively. Co, Cr, Rb, Y and Ba are not significantly different and a detrital source, mainly clay minerals, is suggested. In the marine shales the elements Pb, Cu, V, Ni, Sr and Zn are significantly higher. Using a discriminant function analysis the palaeosalinity groups are separated and the contribution of each element to the separation is calculated. The present element locations are thought, from correlation analysis, to be pyrite and organic matter. By analogy with experimental work and modern environments, the element enrichment is mainly attributed to reactions involving organic matter and oxyhydroxide material in environments in which salinity and slow rates of sedimentation were important factors. The element enrichment cannot be related directly to seawater concentrations, unlike some black shales, and the accumulation rates for Pb and Cu are thought to be unusually high.  相似文献

The climate change issue faces a big challenge, perhaps the biggest challenge of all—politics. Pakistan has taken many noticeable steps in relation to climate change: (1) it is the only country in which the Prime Minister is heading an inter-ministerial task force on climate change, (2) it is the first developing country to establish a specialized, self-financed scientific centre to research the impact of climate change, and (3) it is the lead country to earmark budgetary funds for a national carbon sequestration programme. Pakistan, together with many developing countries, has much to offer the climate change issues. The author proposes five approaches to build consensus among climate policy negotiators: (1) reinforcing the polluter pays principle and ‘common but differentiated responsibility’, (2) active partnership by developing countries, (3) recognizing the voluntary actions taken by developing countries, (4) reinforcing the issue of adaptation, and (5) considering the option of equal per capita entitlements.  相似文献
