Pro-Am astronomy
The long history of close collaboration between amateur and professional in astronomy continued with an RAS discussion meeting held in September. Margaret Penston reports on the lively and enthusiastic discussion.  相似文献

Fausto Cattaneo and David W Hughes delve beneath the surface of the Sun with numerical models of turbulent convection.
Although magnetic dynamo action is traditionally associated with rotation, fast dynamo theory shows that chaotic flows, even without rotation, can act as efficient small-scale dynamos. Indeed, numerical simulations suggest that granular and supergranular convection may generate locally a substantial part of the field in the quiet photosphere.  相似文献

Andrew J Ball, Sarah K Dunkin and David J Heather report on optimistic and innovative ideas raised at the Fourth International Conference on Exploration and Utilisation of the Moon, which resulted in a declaration reviewing the current state of lunar exploration and setting targets for future work.  相似文献

Almost 300 years to the day since Edmond Halley's first magnetic chart, the RAS held a Discussion Meeting to commemorate this achievement and to consider Halley's work in navigation and geophysics. David Barraclough and Toby Clark report on the "300th anniversary of the first magnetic chart: Edmond Halley's work in geophysics and navigation".  相似文献

Alan Cook analyses where Newton's theory of the Moon's motion went wrong, and argues that this 17th century attempt at a solution still has value today.  相似文献

In 1702, Newton's lunar theory was received enthusiastically as a means to determine longitude, but it has long been neglected – except in China, as N Kollerstrom explains.  相似文献

Coronal heating
Louise Harra presents a summary of a meeting at which a wealth of new sources of data – Yohkoh, SOHO, TRACE, XMM-Newton and Chandra – is bringing new insights to studies of solar and stellar coronal heating.  相似文献
