On February 20th, 1979, 142 inhabitants of Dieng Plateau (Indonesia) were asphyxiated by poisonous gases during a mild phreatic eruption. From later fields gas collection and analysis, the casualties are considered to be due to CO2 rich volcanic gases.  相似文献

A new approach to the understanding of volcanic activity is attempted. It consists in establishing tentative correlations between all measurable physical, chemical and geophysical eruptive parameters. The first stage of this program is to devise and design gauges and recorders of different types to be used on different types of existing eruptive vents, whatever their shape, size, violence and accessibility. The methods adopted and the first results obtained on the physical parameters of eruptive gases are described here.  相似文献

Eruptive gases, as sampled at temperatures ca. 1000°C, show strong and swift variations, both in space and time. High gradients and short periods characterize their chemical and physical parameters. On the other hand when collected in conditions preventing strong groundwater or air contamination, water is usually less abundant than carbon dioxide, and several times even absent. Carbon dioxide appears as the major component of the eruptive gas phase during high velocity high pressure (explosive) release phenomena. This tentatively suggests that this prevalence of the dense CO2 (1.5 heavier than air, 3 times heavier than steam) would account for the somewhat puzzling characteristics of nuées ardents and ignimbritic ash-flows, viz., their strong horizontal propagation component and their long heat-content preservation, that allow welding of pyroclasts at scores of kilometers from their emission vent.  相似文献

The two westernmost volcanoes of the Virunga range (Zaïre Rep.) have just offered simultaneous eruptions. The volcano Niragongo delivered an exeeptionally short, yet important, eruption on 10 Jan. 1977. More than 20 × 10 m3 of molten melilite nephelinite were drained from the 3,270 m suspended lava-lake and spread over 20 km2 in less than one hour. This put an end to the half-a-century old sub-permanent lava-lake activity which had rendered Niragongo known world-wide. This event happened during a flank eruption (the new Murara vent) of the close-by sister-volcano, Nyamlagira. This Murara event is quite similar to the many previous ones observed during the last 40 years. Neither of the two outbursts did have, even slightly, any detectable effect on each other. Yet, this simultaneity is probably not due to mere coïncidence.  相似文献

We examined whether adults of three species of sea urchins species (Diadema antillarum, Arbacia lixula, and Paracentrotus lividus) exhibit a consistent depth-dependent partitioning pattern on rocky reefs of the Canarian Archipelago (eastern Atlantic). Hydrodynamic experiments were carried out to quantify the resistance to flow-induced dislodgement in these three species. We tested the model that different morphology can result in habitat partitioning among these sea urchins. Abundances of D. antillarum increased with depth. In contrast, A. lixula and P. lividus showed the opposite zonation pattern, coexisting in high abundances in the shallowest depths (<5 m), and occurring in low densities in the deepest part of reefs (>7 m). Both A. lixula and P. lividus had greater adhesion-surface to body-height ratios than D. antillarum. Similarly, A. lixula and P. lividus showed a greater ability to resist flow-induced dislodgement compared with D. antillarum. The mean “velocity of dislodgement” was 300% and 50% greater for A. lixula and P. lividus, respectively, relative to D. antillarum, for any particular size. As a result, A. lixula and P. lividus are better fitted to life in high-flow environments than D. antillarum. We conclude that the risk of dislodgement by water motion likely play a relevant role in the vertical distribution patterns of these sea urchins in the eastern Atlantic.  相似文献

Bali island may be considered as consisting of two distinct units: the western part, essentially made by a ridge of volcanic breccias, and the eastern part, made by a series of active volcanoes,viz. the strato-volcano Agung and two large calderas, Tjatur and Batur. The latter results from the collapse of a strato-volcano following the outpouring of an ignimbritic unit (ash flow) covering the northern and the southern flanks of Batur. This event occurred some 22,000 years ago. The whole island is tilted northwards around its long axis; this tilt is made obvious 1°) by the different slopes of the ignimbritic flow on the northern and southern sides of the volcano, 2°) by the island morphology and 3°) by the altitude — several hundred meters above sea level — where are found presently on the southern foot of Agung volcano recent submarine basalts (with pillow lavas and hyaloclastites). The tilt of Bali could be due to the presence of a major normal fault (or a system of faults), which itself explains the generation of the ignimbritic magma and, accordingly, the collapse of the caldera. The outflow of the ignimbrite indeed followed a long period of andesitic activity; it has been preceded — and followed — by flows of bandaite, a leucocratic lava with highly basic plagioclase (about 80 to 90% An); according to the authors, this kind of lava was generated, at shallow dephts by the assimilation of aluminous strata by a basaltic magma. Such an assimilation, as well as the anatexy generating the ignimbritic magma, is made possible thanks to important amounts of heat; most probably this heat has been supplied by basaltic magma rising in the crust through large normal faults, the magnitude and dip of which are shown by the northward tilting of the island.  相似文献

A study is carried out to evaluate dynamic response of an elastic circular cylindrical tank having a rigid base under a vertical excitation taking into consideration the interaction with the foundation soil. At first, the soil is represented by frequency-independent parameters. Two coupled differential equations, governing the motion of the shell and the base, are solved using a step by step integration technique. The hydrodynamic pressures, acting on the shell and on the base, are derived from a velocity potential function which satisfies the Laplace equation and the appropriate boundary conditions. The response of the simplified model of a tank having a rigid base on a stiff foundation soil is compated to that obtained elsewhere to check the accuracy of the present model. Reasonable agreement is found between the maximum wall displacement and the associated stresses with those found by a more elaborate model. The interaction of the tank and the soil reduces the response than that calculated under the assumption of a rigid foundation soil. A parametric study to examine the effects of the height-to-radius ratio of the tank, and the effects of the shear wave velocity of the soil on the response is conducted. Varieties of foundation models are used to assess the sensitivity of the response to the variation in the soil parameters. Finally, a more representative solution for the problem in the frequency domain is obtained where the soil is appropriately modelled by frequency-dependent parameters. The transfer functions of the response of the tank wall and of the relative base motion are evaluated, and a comparison between the frequency-dependent and the frequency-independent solutions is made.  相似文献
