The basic aim of this study was to record the changes in the communities on a moderately exposed rocky shore by a programme of repeated non-destructive sampling (‘monitoring’) and to determine the causes of these changes. Possible causative factors were investigated by the combined approach of analysing detailed sea-temperature and meteorological data for the period of the study and establishing manipulative field experiments.Fixed quadrats (2 m by 1 m) at three levels were visited at 6–8 weekly intervals for 30 months and the abundance and spatial pattern of major species assessed. In the ‘High’ quadrat the balance between Fucus spiralis and F. vesiculosus changed, and an outburst of ephemeral algae occurred following a decline in overall canopy cover. In the ‘Mid’ quadrat F. vesiculosus decreased considerably from its initial cover and virtually disappeared by the end of the study. In the ‘Low’ quadrat F. vesiculosus increased from being absent to comprising 20% of the canopy, whilst Semmibalanus (= Balanus) balanoides and ‘understorey’ algae decreased in cover. Actinia equina, Nucella lapillus and Patella vulgata showed marked changes in number at all levels where they occurred.Only certain of these changes could be attributed to the physical environment—most were biologically controlled. For example, manipulative experiments showed that the blooms of ephemeral algae and the decline of Patella in the high-shore quadrat, and the decline of Actinia in the mid-shore quadrat, were due to decreases in the fucoid canopy. These canopy changes were, in turn, the result of biological cycles which are characteristic of these communities. However, even with the support of manipulative experiments, it was not possible to account for (or predict) all of the observed natural changes. The extent of these fluctuations poses a serious obstacle to the recognition of any but very gross pollution-induced effects. The conclusion must be that the monitoring of rocky shores as a means of detecting and measuring pollution is likely to be an unproductive investment of time and resources.  相似文献

Geological data frequently have a heavy-tailed normal-in-the-middle distribution, which gives rise to grade distributions that appear to be normal except for the occurrence of a few outliers. This same situation also applies to log-transformed data to which lognormal kriging is to be applied. For such data, linear kriging is nonrobust in that (1)kriged estimates tend to infinity as the outliers do, and (2)it is also not minimum mean squared error. The more general nonlinear method of disjunctive kriging is even more nonrobust, computationally more laborious, and in the end need not produce better practical answers. We propose a robust kriging method for such nearly normal data based on linear kriging of an editing of the data. It is little more laborious than conventional linear kriging and, used in conjunction with a robust estimator of the variogram, provides good protection against the effects of data outliers. Loihi Seamount is the southeasternmost active volcano of the Emperor-Hawaii linear volcanic chain. It comprises a spectrum of basalt compositional varieties including basanite, alkali basalt, transitional basalt and tholeiite. Samples from four dredge collections made on Scripps Institution of Oceanography Benthic Expedition in October 1982 are tholeiite. The samples include highly vesicular, olivine-rich basalt and dense glass-rich pillow fragments containing olivine and augite phenocrysts. Both quartz-normative and olivine-normative tholeiites are present. Minor and trace element data indicate relatively high abundances of low partition coefficient elements (e.g., Ti, K, P. Rb, Ba, Zr) and suggest that the samples were derived by relatively small to moderate extent of partial melting, of an undepleted mantle source. Olivine composition, MgO, Cr and Ni abundances, and Mg/(Mg+Fe), are typical of moderately fractionated to relatively unfractionated “primary” magmas. The variations in chemistry between samples cannot be adequately explained by low-pressure fractional crystallization but can be satisfied by minor variations in extent of melting if a homogeneous source is postulated. Alternatively, a heterogeneous source with variable abundances of certain trace elements, or mixing of liquids, may have been involved. Data for 3He/4He, presented in a separate paper, implies a mantle plume origin for the helium composition of the Loihi samples. There is little variation in the helium isotope ratio for samples having different compositions and textures. The helium data are not distinctive enough to unequivocally separate the magma sources for the tholeiitic rocks from the other rock types such as Loihi alkalic basalts and the whole source region for Loihi may have a nearly uniform helium compositions even though other element abundances may be variable. Complex petrologic processes including variable melting, fractional crystallization and magma mixing may have blurred original helium isotopic signatures.  相似文献

Inclined pipe vesicles and stretched vesicles near the base of basalt flows have long been regarded as reliable flow-direction indicators. However, attempts to use such structures in the Santa Rosa Basalt of Southern California to determine regional flow patterns, paleoslope, and source of eruption yielded inconclusive and contradictory results. Orientations of 1070 vesicles at 37 localities were obtained directions of inclination from vertical were plotted on circular histograms. At any specific locality vesicle orientations typically are normally distributed through a 40–60 degree sector. Commonly a pronounced maximum lies within a 20–40 degree sector. Even at localities having bimodal or trimodal distribution patterns, most vesicles plot within a 90 degree sector. The frequency distribution of oriented vesicles at individual localities strongly suggests a limited direction of flow and implies a source in the opposite direction. Comparison of such «flow directions» from locality to locality within the same flow, however, yielded highly divergent results over short distances. Likewise, comparison of directions from different flows yielded results ranging from parallel to diametrically opposed. Composite circular histograms from three small mesas censisting of thin, flat-lying flows showed little apparent preferred direction of vesicle inclination. Possible reasons for the highly divergent readings include sub-flow surface irregularities, turbulent rather than laminar flow, and/or convection in the lava during cooling. Although inclined vesicles may well indicate motion in a flow, their use for determination of flow directions and for regional paleogeographic interpretations is questionable.  相似文献

During the Near-Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft's investigation of asteroid 433 Eros, inflight calibration measurements from the multispectral imager (MSI) have provided refined knowledge of the camera's radiometric performance, pointing, and light-scattering characteristics. Measurements while at Eros corroborate most earlier calibration results, although there appears to be a small, gradual change in instrument dark current and flat field due to effects of aging in the space environment. The most pronounced change in instrument behavior, however, is a dramatic increase in scattered light due to contaminants accumulated on the optics during unscheduled fuel usage in December 1998. Procedures to accurately quantify and to remediate the scattered light are described in a companion paper (Li et al. 2002, Icarus155, 00-00). Acquisition of Eros measurements has clarified the relative, filter-to-filter, radiometric performance of the MSI. Absolute radiometric calibration appears very well constrained from flight measurements, with an accuracy of ∼5%. Pointing relative to the spacecraft coordinate system can be determined from the temperature of the spacecraft deck with an accuracy of ∼1 pixel.  相似文献

In this paper we report the first results from a survey for low-mass stars and brown dwarfs, based on a photographic stack of around 100 Schmidt plates. This survey extends photographic searches by about 2 mag, and covers an area of 25 deg2. Some 30 faint objects with large R − I colours were selected for further study, and were found to have very strong molecular absorption in their spectra, but only moderately red infrared colours. Five of these stars were selected for a parallax programme; three of these were found to be at a distance of around 45 pc, implying a very low luminosity. On the basis of their luminosity alone it is clear that these stars are field brown dwarfs, and we discuss their likely evolutionary status in the context of current models of low-mass stellar evolution.  相似文献

The Lau Basin is a marginal sea, located between the Tonga and Lau Ridges, in the southwestern Pacific. The basin is on the “inner” or concave side of the Tonga Trench-Arc system and is situated above the deep seismic zone dipping westward from the Tonga Trench. The Tonga Trench-Arc system is undoubtedly located above a zone of crustal shortening as evidenced by the deep seismicity and vulcanism. However, the geological and geophysical data give strong support to the contention that the Lau Basin has formed by crustal dilation.Rocks dredged from ridges and seamounts in the basin are sub-alkaline basalt. The average major element composition of least altered samples is: SiO2 48.8%, TiO2 1.2%, K2O 0.18%, P2O5 0.08%, H2O+ 0.30%, FeIII/FeII = 0.26,CaO/Al2O3 = 0.77. The data for Lau Basin basalt (LBB) show close similarity to data of typical oceanic ridge basalt (ORB). Trace element abundances (ppm): Ni 160, Cr 390, Sr 100, Ba < 31, Rb < 1 also resemble ORB values. K/Rb in a least altered and unfractionated sample is 860, Ba/Sr is 0.1, Ba/Rb is 8. Strontium isotope data show the only marked variance from ORB chemistry with LBB values ranging from 87Sr/86Sr=0.7020 to 0.7051. The low Sr abundances in the samples suggest the possibility of crustal Sr contamination to explain the radiogenic Sr enrichment. An alternate possibility is that the mantle source rocks were enriched in 87Sr. Variation within dredge hauls and between dredge sites may be explained by low-pressure fractional crystallization of magmas separated from the mantle at about 50 km depth.The basin probably began to open in middle to late Miocene time either by the disruption of a single andesitic island arc by splitting along its axis or by dilation of the area between two closely spaced concentric arcs. Mantle counterflow in the asthenosphere above the downgoing oceanic lithosphere slab is the probable driving force for dilation and has provided a continuous supply of parent material for the basalt of the basin floor.  相似文献

Cluster analysis showed that at least five compositional subgroups exist within the heulandite family of zeolites. The two extreme members of these five groups are the traditional heulandites and clinoptilolites. At a coarser level of clustering, two subgroups, clinoptilolite and heulandite, are evident. As shown by discriminant analysis, the most important compositional variable distinguishing all these groups is calcium. From principal components analysis, it was found that the c cell dimensions of the heulandite family of zeolites varies directly with aluminum and inversely with silicon. The a cell dimension and the β angle seem to vary inversely with the iron content. The b cell dimension may vary inversely with iron and aluminum and directly with silicon.  相似文献

A high resolution modeling study is undertaken, with a 2.5-dimensional nonhydrostatic model, of the generation of internal waves induced by tidal motion over the ridges in Luzon Strait. The model is forced by the barotropic tidal components K1, M2, and O1. These tidal components, along with the initial density field, were extracted from data and models. As the barotropic tide moves over the Luzon Strait sills, there is a conversion of barotropic tidal energy into baroclinic tidal energy. Depressions are generated that propagate towards the Asian Seas International Acoustics Experiment (ASIAEX) test site on the Chinese continental shelf. Nonlinear effects steepen the depressions, frequency and amplitude dispersion set in, and disintegration into large amplitude solitary waves occurs. The effects of varying the initial density field, tidal component magnitudes, as well as adding a steady background current to represent the occasional excursions of the Kuroshio Current into the strait, are considered.Depressions are generated at each of the two sills in Luzon Strait which radiate away, steepening and evolving into internal solitary wave trains. Baroclinic fluxes of available potential energy, kinetic energy and linear are calculated for various parameter combinations. The solitary wave trains produced in the simulations generally consist of large amplitude wave trains alternating with small amplitude wave trains. During strong tidal flow, Kelvin–Helmholtz type instabilities can develop over the taller double-humped sill. The solitary waves propagating towards the ASIAEX test site have been observed to reach amplitudes of 120–250 m, depending on the tidal strength. ASIAEX observations indicate amplitudes up to 150 m and the Windy Island Experiment (WISE) measurements contain magnitudes over 200 m. The model results yield solitary wave amplitudes of 70–300 m and half widths of 0.60–3.25 km, depending on parameter values. These are in the range of observations. Measurements by Klymak et al. (2006), in the South China Sea, exhibit amplitudes of 170 m, half widths of 3 km and phase speeds of 2.9 m s?1. Model predictions indicate that the solitary waves making up the wave packet each experience different background currents with strong near surface shear.The energy in the leading soliton of the large amplitude wave trains ranges between 1.8 and 9.0 GJ m?1. The smaller value, produced using barotropic tidal currents based on the Oregon State University data base, is the same as the energy estimated to be in a solitary wave observed by Klymak et al. (2006). Estimates of the conversion of barotropic tidal energy into radiating internal wave energy yield conversion rates ranging between 3.6% and 8.3%.  相似文献
