High Possil and Strathmore are the first (1804) and last (1917) meteorite falls, respectively, of the three recorded in Scotland. Olivine compositions and total Fe contents in High Possil (Fa25.2; 21.35 wt %) and Strathmore (Fa25.3; 20.6 wt %) confirm their classification as L-group chondrites (Mason, 1963), and the presence of abundant plagioclase feldspar shows that both chondrites belong to petrologic type 6. Both chondrites display thermal and mechanical alteration attributable to moderate shock-loading appropriate to facies c (High Possil) and c-d (Strathmore) (Dodd and Jarosewich, 1979). Incipient shock-melting of metal and troilite in both chondrites is the first described from Lc chondrites, and differences in the responses of metallic and silicate minerals to shock-loading are discussed.  相似文献

The effects of sedimentation and compaction on oceanic heat flow   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Summary. The estimation of environmental effects forms an important part of the interpretation of oceanic heat flow measurements. In particular, the perturbations associated with sedimentation and surface temperature changes must be taken into account. Analytical solutions can be obtained only for individual, simplified versions of these problems, whereas any real example is complicated by the process of sediment compaction which changes the bulk thermal properties with depth. A physical model is developed which uses sediment porosity trends to predict the thermal parameters and material advection rates for an evolving sediment/basement system. These values are then used in a numerical solution to the heat flow equation to give estimates of the perturbed surface heat flux through time. In addition to variations in sedimentation rate, sediment type, radioactive heat production and surface temperature changes are considered. Heat flow corrections may vary by up to a factor of 2 according to sediment type while radioactive heat production can offset the effects of sedimentation by as much as 40 per cent. The results also indicate that alterations determined from simple analytical models tend to over-estimate the true perturbation to the flux.  相似文献

The spatial variability of turbulence in a fully-leafed almond orchard was studied. Two three-dimensional sonic anemometers were used to measure turbulence spectra and coherence at different vertical and lateral separations inside the canopy. Peak frequencies of the horizontal velocity components, normalized by local horizontal wind speed, are greater in the canopy crown than in the trunkspace. Peak-normalized frequencies for the vertical velocity power spectra are similar in the canopy crown and in the subcanopy trunkspace. Spectral slopes in the inertial subrange are more negative than those predicted with Kolmogorov's -2/3 theory. It is thought that the foliage elements act to short-circuit the eddy cascade. Lateral separation of the instruments in the subcanopy trunkspace has little effect on the shape of the velocity spectra. On the other hand, lateral and vertical velocity coherences between spatially separated sensors are low inside the canopy. These low coherences are due to the Eulerian length scales being of the same order of magnitude as the separation distances of the anemometers. Phase angles between velocity components are about zero for small separation distances. When the two instruments are separated by 9 m and one instrument is positioned in a row while the other is between two rows, vertical velocities are about 180 deg out of phase and the streamwise velocities are about 40 to 60 deg out of phase. These data support the contention that preferred differences occur between within- and between-row wind flow regimes.  相似文献

Ground water budget analysis in arid basins is substantially aided by integrated use of numerical models and environmental isotopes. Spatial variability of recharge, storage of water of both modern and pluvial age, and complex three-dimensional flow processes in these basins provide challenges to the development of a good conceptual model. Ground water age dating and mixing analysis with isotopic tracers complement standard hydrogeologic data that are collected and processed as an initial step in the development and calibration of a numerical model. Environmental isotopes can confirm or refute a priori assumptions of ground water flow, such as the general assumption that natural recharge occurs primarily along mountains and mountain fronts. Isotopes also serve as powerful tools during postaudits of numerical models. Ground water models provide a means of developing ground water budgets for entire model domains or for smaller regions within the model domain. These ground water budgets can be used to evaluate the impacts of pumping and estimate the magnitude of capture in the form of induced recharge from streams, as well as quantify storage changes within the system. The coupled analyses of ground water budget analysis and isotope sampling and analysis provide a means to confirm, refute, or modify conceptual models of ground water flow.  相似文献

Abstract— Iodine-xenon analyses of chondrules from the Bjurböle L4 and Parnallee LL3.6 meteorites have been made using a continuous wave laser microprobe and the resonance ionisation mass spectrometer RELAX. The excess 129Xe content released from the Bjurböle chondrule is lower than previous stepped-heating studies have found, suggesting that the technique does not completely degas the samples. Nonetheless, clear isochrons were produced, and data for initial 129Xe/130Xe are consistent with earlier work. A correlation is evident in each chondrule between 131Xe* and 128Xe* perhaps indicating a common host-phase for their parent nuclides, a condition possibly fulfilled by a Te- and I-bearing sulfide. The I-Xe system of a Parnallee macrochondrule exhibits no excess 129Xe, possibly as a result of thermal alteration or deformation before accumulation of the meteorite. A cristobalite-bearing chondrule depleted in 16O yields an I-Xe age of 4.5 ± 0.5 Ma after the mean Bjurböle age.  相似文献

Abstract— A set of cristobalite- and tridymite-rich igneous clasts (CB1 to CB8) have been found in Parnallee (LL3.6). They consist of clinoenstatite, minor feldspathic mesostasis and cristobalite veined by endiopsideaugite. The largest clast, CB8, is 1.6 cm in diameter and contains veined tridymite and cristobalite, clinoenstatite (zoned to ferroaugite and pyroxferroite Fs75.6Wo20.0) and plagioclase. Compared to bulk ordinary chondrites (OC), the bulk clasts are depleted in Al (0.02–0.8× OC), Na and K and enriched in Si (1.6–2.0× OC) and Ca (1.3–4.5× OC). Bulk CB8 has LREE > HREE (La/Lu = 1.6) with a positive Eu anomaly (Eu/Eu* = 2.4). Textural observations suggest that the clasts cooled rapidly (24–420 °C/h) above 1200 °C. Clasts CB1—CB8 contain the isotopically heaviest O yet found in ordinary chondrites (up to δ17O = +8.7%o, δ18O = +11.6%o). Enrichment in the heavy isotopes of O is dependent on the proportion of cristobalite (or tridymite) in the clasts. A regression line CRIL (Cristobalite Line), with slope 0.77, is defined by the isotopic compositions of CB1—CB8, the Farmington clast and ordinary chondrite chondrules. An 16O-poor gas reservoir, whose composition must lie at some point along the extension of CRIL, has undergone varying degrees of isotopic exchange with most ordinary chondrite material. Silica polymorphs have undergone the greatest degree of exchange because of their open, framework structures. Silicon in CB1—CB8 has normal isotopic ratios. A model is proposed that involves differentiation of H-group material through extraction of volatile elements in a vapour phase, loss of an Fe-Ni-S melt and metastable crystallisation (60–70%) of olivine. The calculated residual liquid is silica-oversaturated and its subsequent predicted crystallisation sequence resembles that preserved in CB1—CB8. This model may require two stages of heating, the second one prior to cristobalite crystallisation (if the silica polymorph crystallises within its predicted stability field of > 1500 °C). Isotopic exchange took place either when CB1—CB8 were ejected from their parent body due to impact or near the surface of the parent body, perhaps in an ejecta blanket setting. Stable isotope data for the Hueco Bolson aquifer (Texas, USA and Chihuahua, Mexico) distinguish four water types. Two types relate to recharge from the Rio Grande: pre-dam (pre-1916) river water with oxygen-18 and deuterium (δ18O, δD, ‰) from (?11.9, ?90) to (?10.1, ?82), contrasts with present-day river water (?8.5, ?74) to (?5.3, ?56). Pre-dam water is found beneath the Rio Grande floodplain and Ciudad Juárez, and is mixed with post-dam river water beneath the floodplain. Two other types relate to recharge of local precipitation; evidence of temporal change of precipitation isotopes is present in both types. Recharge from the Franklin and Organ Mountains plots between (?10.9, ?76) and (?8.5, ?60) on the global meteoric water line (GMWL), and is found along the western side of the Hueco Bolson, north of the Rio Grande. Recharge from the Diablo Plateau plots on an evaporation trend originating on the GMWL near (?8.5, ?58). This water is found in the southeastern Hueco Bolson, north of the river; evaporation may be related to slow recharge through fine-grained sediment. Pre-dam water, recognizable by isotope composition, provides information on groundwater residence times in this and other dammed river basins.  相似文献

The island of Kod Ali is a small diatreme cone lying close to the Ethiopian coast at latitude 13° 57 N, longitude 41° 49 E. This volcanic structure, produced by geologically Recent volcanic activity, consists, almost entirely, of pyroclastic debris. Evidence of a liquid phase is confined to the thin veneers of markedly alkalic olivine basalt which coat many of the abundant gabbroic, pyroxenitic and lherzolitic fragments found on the island. As silicic inclusions are completely absent and as the alkalic liquid phase and the tholeiitic inclusions are seemingly genetically unrelated, it is proposed that the latter might have been derived from a tholeiitic plutonic layered sequence that underlies the tholeiitic basalts of an oceanic Red Sea floor.  相似文献

If the Earth formed by accretion of volatile-rich material on to a refractory, primitive body with incomplete subsequent mixing, old or deep-seated igneous rocks should exhibit an anti-correlation between radiogenic Pb and radiogenic Sr. The ancient Amîtsoq gneiss and some modern oceanic rocks appear to comply with this model.
