Based on the Kalman filter theory, a new data-assimilation method has been used to improve the 3-D oceanic temperature field
of the Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA) coupled general circulation model. This method is applied to assimilate
surface and subsurface temperature of in situ measurements from the Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic project
(PIRATA). The assimilation of the PIRATA data produces an improved representation of the thermal state of the ocean and allows
a better estimation of other oceanographic quantities, like meridional heat fluxes and zonal currents. The present paper focuses
on the tropical Atlantic and, in particular, it contains new reconstructed temperature profiles. One-month forecast experiments
during 1999 were performed and the impact of the assimilation is discussed.

Observed along-track data of sea surface height anomalies (SSHAs) over the Atlantic Ocean from the Jason-1 and Jason-2 satellites were assimilated into the Hybrid-Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) with the Ensemble Optimal Interpolation scheme (EnOI). The impact of assimilation of SSHA with focus on oceanic dynamics was investigated. Time series of analyzed and forecasted values were compared with a model free run with the same forcing but without assimilation. In addition, the results were compared with an independent run, the so-called HYCOM + NCODA analysis from the US Navy. The study shows that the assimilation technique with some modifications allowed substantial improvement in the 24 h ocean prediction by reducing the forecast errors in comparison with the free run. It is also shown that the analyzed sea surface fields contain mesoscale and synoptic variability, which are poorly seen in the free run. 相似文献

Different data assimilation methods such as an extended Kalman filter, the optimal interpolation method, and a method based on the Fokker-Planck equation applications are considered. Data from the ARGO drifters are assimilated into the HYCOM shallow water model (University of Miami, USA). Throughout the study, the schemes and methods of parallel computations with an MPI library are used. The results of the computations with assimilations are compared between themselves and with independent observations. The method based on the Fokker-Planck equation and the extended Kalman filter are preferable because they give better results than the optimal interpolation scheme. The various model characteristics of the ocean, such as the heat content fields and others, are analyzed after the data assimilation. 相似文献
