Rifting to Spreading Process along the Northern Continental Margin of the South China Sea 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Understanding the development from syn-rift to spreading in the South China Sea (SCS) is important in elucidating the western Pacific's tectonic evolution because the SCS is a major tectonic constituent of the many marginal seas in the region. This paper describes research examining the transition from rifting to spreading along the northern margin of the SCS, made possible by the amalgamation of newly acquired and existing geophysical data. The northernmost SCS was surveyed as part of a joint Japan-China cooperative project (JCCP) in two phases in 1993 and 1994. The purpose of the investigation was to reveal seismic and magnetic characteristics of the transitional zone between continental crust and the abyssal basin. Compilation of marine gravity and geomagnetic data of the South China Sea clarify structural characteristics of its rifted continental and convergent margins, both past and present. Total and three component magnetic data clearly indicate the magnetic lineations of the oceanic basin and the magnetic characteristics of its varied margins. The analyses of magnetic, gravity and seismic data and other geophysical and geological information from the SCS led up to the following results: (1) N-S direction seafloor spreading started from early Eocene. There were at least four separate evolutional stages. Directions and rates of the spreading are fluctuating and unstable and spreading continued from 32 to 17 Ma. (2) The apparent difference in the present tectonism of the eastern and western parts of Continent Ocean Boundary (COB) implies that in the east of the continental breakup is governed by a strike slip faulting. (3) The seismic high velocity layer in the lower crust seems to be underplated beneath the stretched continental crust. (4) Magnetic anomaly of the continental margin area seems to be rooted in the uppermost sediment and upper part of lower crust based on the tertiary volcanism. (5) Magnetic quiet zone (MQZ) anomaly in the continental margin area coincides with COB. (6) The non-magnetic or very weakly magnetized layer is probably responsible for MQZ. One of the causes of demagnetization of the layer is due to hydrothermal alteration while high temperature mantle materials being underplated. Another explanation is that horizontal sequences of basalt each with flip-flop magnetization polarity cancel out to the resultant magnetic field on the surface. We are currently developing a synthetic database system containing datasets of seismicity, potential field data, crustal and thermal structures, and other geophysical data to facilitate the study of past, contemporary and future changes in the deep sea environment around Japan; i.e. trench, trough, subduction zones, marginal basins and island arcs. Mean total length of the eldest cohort (MTLe) of the thalassinidean decapod, Upogebia yokoyai sampled at 16 sites showed a latitudinal variation from south-west islands of the Ryukyu Archipelago (24° N) to the Seto-Inland Sea of Japan (34° N). Local variations were however also found from sites in the same latitudes. The level of the organic content in each habitat showed a positive correlation with MTLe. We hypothesized that MTLe is strongly affected by the trophic condition, resulting in the local variations. To test this hypothesis, two estuaries with different organic content were compared; Kodono River (Kochi Prefecture, 33° N) which was relatively oligotrophic and Sakata River (Hiroshima Prefecture, 34° N) which was highly eutrophicated. The Kodono River population showed slow growth after settlement, and growth stopped in May to June. This population survived for only one or two years, resulting in small MTLe. On the other hand, the Sakata River population showed fast growth from August to December. This population survived for three years, resulting in large MTLe. Maturation was estimated to occur two years after settlement in both populations. Low salinities may partially affect MTLe. Habitats in the Seto-Inland Sea (33.5–34.8° N) were eutrophicated, but many habitats in the subtropical islands (24–31° N) were relatively oligotrophic. Latitudinal variation of MTLe was reflected by the geographical difference in trophic condition. A negative relationship between population density and growth was found, which was explained in terms of reduced survival of recruits in the eutrophicated habitats. 相似文献

A system of propagating cracks may explain magma transport and the evolution of a volcano. This paper considers only a basaltic magma. The system is controlled by two boundary conditions: the stress field, and the production rate of the magma-filled cracks in the mantle. Numerical solutions of crack propagation for various stress conditions, with a constant production rate high enough to coalesce isolated cracks, were performed, and the results applied to different tectonic conditions. For the hydrostatic stress conditions, most magma-filled cracks beneath a polygenetic volcano become trapped either in the lower crust, because there the density difference between magma and the host rocks () becomes suddenly small, compared with that in the mantle, or trapped in the upper crust, because there is near to zero. Magma traps composed of such cracks may grow into magma reservoirs if the production rate of cracks in the mantle is large. If horizontal stress with a vertical gradient is superimposed on the hydrostatic condition in the crust, that is, tensile stress which increases upward or compressional stress which increases downward, magmafilled cracks, even if the density of magma is higher than that of the crust, may ascend directly without trapping. When the crust undergoes relative tension, magma-filled cracks may become trapped. Then, the lower part of the trap may grow into a magma reservoir, while the upper part may become filled with dikes. When the production rate of cracks is small, an initial magma-filled crack can rise directly to the surface only when the stress with a gradient is superimposed as mentioned above, or when the average density in a crack decreases, owing to, for example, vesiculation of volatile components. 相似文献

A new current-to-current converter, which is a key device to branch a constant direct current (DC) into two constant DCs, was proposed [K. Asakawa , Proc. OCEANS, pp. 1868-1873, 2003]. It has been verified, through computer simulations and experiments using prototypes, to have good conversion efficiency and stable operation. Because the basic circuit is simple, high reliability is expected. The structure and electronic properties of trigonal and orthorhombic boric oxide (B2O3) are studied using periodic ab initio Hartree-Fock method. The optimised structural parameters for two B2O3 polymorphs are in good agreement with experimental data. The analyses of their electronic structures provide insights into the chemical nature of the B–O bond and the way in which it changes with the coordination number around boron and oxygen. Our quantum-chemical study suggests that the orthorhombic form is more ionic than the trigonal form and that the coordination number of boron around oxygen plays a more dominant role than that of oxygen around boron in B2O3 crystals. 相似文献

Microbial responses to the addition of oil with or without a chemical dispersant were examined in mesocosm and microcosm experiments by using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of bacterial ribosomal DNA and direct cell counting. When a water-soluble fraction of oil was added to seawater, increases in cell density were observed in the first 24h, followed by a decrease in abundance and a change in bacterial species composition. After addition of an oil-dispersant mixture, increases in cell density and changes in community structure coincided, and the amount of bacteria remained high. These phenomena also occurred in response to addition of only dispersant. Our results suggest that the chemical dispersant may be used as a nutrient source by some bacterial groups and may directly or indirectly prevent the growth of other bacterial groups. 相似文献
