Summary In the Nuggihalli schist belt (India), chromite bodies were affected by intense serpentinization followed by weathering. In spite of the strong oxidation of the chromite grains, some unaltered cores were preserved, and they were characterised using electron probe microanalysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and low temperature 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. Results of such investigations revealed that chromite cores from the Nuggihalli schist belt are effectively not oxidised, and their study revealed that chromite was not affected by greenschist-facies metamorphism. The apparently highly ordered cation distribution of the chromites, which would suggest low equilibration temperature, is just caused by the very high Cr contents, which prevent Mg–Al exchange between T and M sites. Using Fabries (1979) geothermometer a temperature of about 1180°C was retrieved (Mitra and Bidyananda, 2003), which therefore corresponds to the quenched-in igneous equilibrium.  相似文献

Summary Mineral chemistry and petrological data of chromites from chromitite bands in the N–S trending schist belt of Nuggihalli (southern Karnataka, India), belonging to the Dharwar craton of South India, are presented in this paper. Crystal chemical data indicate a komatiitic affinity of the chromitite. P–T calculations of the chromite-hosting peridotites yielded a pressure range of 13 to 28 kbar and temperatures ranging from 775 to 1080 °C; the oxygen fugacity (log fO2) varies from +0.5 to +1.6 above the QFM buffer. The P, T and fO2 data indicate that Nuggihalli chromitites crystallized in an environment akin to the upper mantle. The studied samples also show partial resetting; the lower temperatures ranging from 515 to 680 °C are ascribed to subsequent metamorphism of the area.  相似文献

Chromite from the north–south-trending schist belt of Nuggihalli (southern Karnataka), belonging to the greenstone belt of South India (3.0–3.5 Ga) and crystallising at 1178 °C under oxygen fugacity of ?6.67 shows komatiitic affinity. The chemical data of the Cr-spinels when plotted in the form of the discriminant function of Johan (1979) show a remarkable follow-up of the curve A, which delineates the boundary between the ‘barren’ and ‘fertile’ (with respect to the plausible presence of sulphide phases) Cr-spinel bodies. Only a few samples plot marginally within the barren region (Fig. 1), suggesting that the chromite bands should hardly hold the possibility of becoming host of sulphide mineralisation of commercial relevance.  相似文献

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) may play the role of infochemicals and trigger chemotaxis and ecologically relevant responses in freshwater and marine invertebrates. Aquatic grazers use these signals as chemical cues to trace the presence of their food or to detect their predators. However, detailed data are still needed to fully understand the role of these relationships in marine plankton. We investigated the ability of the copepod Centropages typicus to perceive the odour of three planktonic diatoms (Skeletonema marinoi, Pseudonitzschia delicatissima and Chaetoceros affinis) and a dinoflagellate (Prorocentrum minimum). This information is ecologically relevant for orientation, habitat selection, predator avoidance and communication. In addition, as the pH of the medium influences the perception of chemical cues in aquatic environments, we tested the effect of seawater acidification resulting from increasing levels of CO2, and its influences on the olfactory reactions of copepods. For this reason, our tests were repeated in normal (pH 8.10) and acidified (pH 7.76) seawater in order to simulate future ocean acidification scenarios. Using replicated chemokinetic assays we demonstrated that VOCs produced by Ps. delicatissima and Pr. minimum attract copepods at normal pH, but this effect is lowered in acidified water. By contrast, the odour of S. marinoi mainly induces a reaction of repulsion, but in acidified water and at higher concentrations this toxic diatom becomes attractive for copepods. Our experiments demonstrate, for the first time, that copepods are sensitive to the volatile compounds contained in various microalgae; VOCs prompt chemokinesis according to algal species and odour concentrations. However, seawater acidification induces changes in copepods' perception of odours. These findings highlight the sensitivity of chemically mediated interactions to global changes  相似文献
