Injection of Newtonian crystal-free magmas into a partially crystallised host which may exhibit non-Newtonian properties produces magmatic structures such as pipes, syn-plutonic dikes or dendritic structures. Field relationships between the structure and the host rock commonly indicate what the rheological contrasts during the injection were. The manner in which a magma deforms in response to injection is mainly linked to crystal content and strain rate (i.e., injection rate). Three kinds of behaviour can be distinguished: (1) Newtonian at low crystal contents; (2) Non-Newtonian at intermediate (40–60%) crystal contents, or at high crystal contents if the strain rate is small; and (3) brittle failure at high crystal content or strain rates.Petrologic observations indicate that injection can take place when the host magma still behaves as a fluid. To investigate the physics of the injection process we review the results of injection experiments in non-Newtonian fluids. These experiments were performed to study viscous fingering in 2-D Hele Shaw cells. They provide the first step to establishing the main non-Newtonian effects during the formation of interfacial instabilities arising when a Newtonian fluid is injected into a more viscous fluid or paste. The qualitative comparison of the morphological features of the interfaces between the fluids in the experiments with those in nature suggests that, in magmas, irregularities of the interfaces (dikes and dendrites) result from non-Newtonian properties of the host. We conclude that fluid-like deformation, rather than brittle behaviour of the host, during injection is likely to produce the general features observed on the field. Cooling effects might be responsible for the widespread phenomenon of fragmentation. We emphasise that the main effect of non-Newtonian properties in partially crystallised magmas is to generate strongly heterogeneous media producing discontinuities which could explain the main morphological features of syn-plutonic injection structures.  相似文献

To investigate how magma rises through the brittle upper crust in a context of compressional tectonics, we have performed experiments on scaled physical models. Powdered silica (having a cohesion of 300 Pa and an angle of internal friction of 38°) was used to represent brittle crust. A vegetable oil (with a Newtonian viscosity of 10?2 Pa·s at 50 °C) was used to represent magma. A moving piston shortened the models in a box, while oil was injected steadily at the base. On cooling to room temperature, the oil solidified. The resulting intrusions were thin sills, dykes and laccoliths. Their shapes and emplacement modes depended on the ratio R between rates of shortening and injection. From shapes and orientations of intrusions, we infer that hydraulic fracturing was one mechanism of emplacement. Unconsolidated intrusions strongly influenced thrust formation. On the basis of our experiments, we suggest that magmas in orogenic belts can rise along thrust faults.  相似文献

In order to identify the dominant non-Newtonian effects which occur during the injection of a new Newtonian magma through a partially crystallized magma chamber, we have performed some preliminary analogue experiments which enable us to point out several features induced by the non-Newtonian properties of the host fluid during injection processes. These experiments were performed in a three-dimensional device and involve complex non-Newtonian fluids—clay suspensions in which rheological properties such as bulk strength, yield strength and rheofluidification exponent may vary. Forced injection takes place through a slot which in the case of a Newtonian host fluid is the geometry that provides planar structures. Depending both on the density contrast and on the rheological contrast between the injected dyed water and the host fluid three kind of structures were observed: (1) permanent plumes when the injected water is lighter than the suspension exhibiting rheological properties close to Newtonian fluids; (2) pseudo-fountains and spreading at the bottom of the tank with a destabilizing density contrast and in high yield strength/more viscous suspensions; (3) fountains with a slightly stablizing density contrast. The implications for magma chamber evolution are briefly discussed. In particular it seems that homogeneous non-Newtonian media inhibit the formation of planar structures and partially crystallized magma may induce the spreading of the new magma at the bottom or at the top of the chamber regardless of the density contrast between the magmas.  相似文献

So far, no phytolith extraction protocols have been tested for accuracy and repeatability. Here we aim to display a phytolith extraction method combining the strengths of two widely used protocols, supplemented with silica microspheres as exogenous markers for quantifying phytolith concentrations. Phytolith concentrations were estimated for samples from two sedimentary sequences in which numerical age–depth models make it possible to calculate phytolith influxes (phytolith numbers per cm2per yr). Analysis of replicates confirmed the statistical robustness, the repeatability and the very few biases of our extraction technique for small phytoliths, since the relationship between grass silica short cells and microspheres was kept stable. Furthermore, we demonstrated that silica microspheres are robust exogenous markers for estimating phytolith concentrations. The minimum number of items (i.e., phytoliths plus silica microspheres) that must be counted to estimate phytolith concentrations and thus influxes depends on the ratio of phytoliths to microspheres (R) and is minimized when R = 1. Nevertheless, we recommend using ratios R ≤ 1 in order to avoid having the counting process become excessively time-consuming, because microspheres are easier to identify and count than phytoliths.  相似文献

In soils, silicon released by mineral weathering can be retrieved from soil solution through clay formation, Si adsorption onto secondary oxides and plant uptake, thereby impacting the Si-isotopic signature and Ge/Si ratio of dissolved Si (DSi) exported to rivers. Here we use these proxies to study the contribution of biogenic Si (BSi) in a soil-plant system involving basaltic ash soils differing in weathering degree under intensive banana cropping. δ30Si and Ge/Si ratios were determined in bulk soils (<2 mm), sand (50-2000 μm), silt (2-50 μm), amorphous Si (ASi, 2-50 μm) and clay (<2 μm) fractions: δ30Si by MC-ICP-MS Nu Plasma in medium resolution, operating in dry plasma with Mg doping (δ30Si vs. NBS28 ± 0.12‰ ± 2σSD), Ge/Si computed after determination of Ge and Si concentrations by HR-ICP-MS and ICP-AES, respectively. Components of the ASi fraction were quantified by microscopic counting (phytoliths, diatoms, ashes). Compared to fresh ash (δ30Si = −0.38‰; Ge/Si = 2.21 μmol mol−1), soil clay fractions (<2 μm) were enriched in light Si isotopes and Ge: with increasing weathering degree, δ30Si decreased from −1.19 to −2.37‰ and Ge/Si increased from 4.10 to 5.25 μmol mol−1. Sand and silt fractions displayed δ30Si values close to fresh ash (−0.33‰) or higher due to saharian dust quartz deposition, whose contribution was evaluated by isotopic mass balance calculation. Si-isotopic signatures of bulk soils (<2 mm) were strongly governed by the relative proportions of primary and secondary minerals: the bulk soil Si-isotopic budget could be closed indicating that all the phases involved were identified. Microscopic counting highlighted a surface accumulation of banana phytoliths and a stable phytolith pool from previous forested vegetation. δ30Si and Ge/Si values of clay fractions in poorly developed volcanic soils, isotopically heavier and Ge-depleted in surface horizons, support the occurrence of a DSi source from banana phytolith dissolution, available for Si sequestration in clay-sized secondary minerals (clay minerals formation and Si adsorption onto Fe-oxide). In the soil-plant system, δ30Si and Ge/Si are thus highly relevant to trace weathering and input of DSi from phytoliths in secondary minerals, although not quantifying the net input of BSi to DSi.  相似文献

Testate amoebae that inhabit peat are sensitive indicators of water table position. In this study, we used testate amoebae in sediments from a mire in the western Alps (Lac du Thyl) to: (1) reconstruct the hydrology of the site over the last 7,000 years, (2) determine how hydrological changes affected testate amoebae diversity and (3) infer past trophic state shifts. The study site is located in one of the driest valleys of the Alps and is thus very sensitive to hydrological changes. Our study revealed that the water table depth increased (dry conditions) between 5,800 and 4,000 cal year BP. This triggered establishment of a Sphagnum-type peat and acidic conditions from 5,700 to 4,000 cal year BP. These processes were independent of ongoing transformations of the terrestrial vegetation and soil in the catchment area. After 1,690 cal year BP, the depth to the water table decreased (wetter conditions) and a minerotrophic fen developed. At the same time, the diversity of testate amoebae increased, probably as a result of deforestation that supported the expansion of grassland. Climate and land use were apparently more important factors controlling the lake hydrology than were changes in vegetation and soil in the catchment. Testate amoebae diversity was linked to land cover. Changes in pH were controlled indirectly by external forcing (climate), but more directly by fluctuations in the level of the water table (internal forcing) and autogenous expansion of Sphagnum.  相似文献

The aim of the study is to calibrate the phytolith index of tree cover density, D/P (the ratio of ligneous dicotyledons phytoliths (D) over Poaceae phytoliths (P)) with Leaf Area Index (LAI) measurements. LAI is the vertically integrated surface of leaves per unit of ground area (m2 leaves/m2 ground). Modern soil samples from southeastern Cameroon, collected along a continuous forest–savanna transect, have been analyzed for phytoliths. Phytolith assemblages and D/P index clearly record the physiognomy of the forest and savanna communities and of the transition between both of them. A highly significant relationship was obtained between D/P and LAI. The relationship between phytolith data and the vegetation transect is also discussed and compared with existing palynological results obtained along the same transect.  相似文献

The main objective of this paper is to provide researchers that investigate fossil phytolith assemblages and model/data comparisons a new tool for estimating C3/C4 grass composition over time. We tested the reliability of modern soil phytolith assemblages and phytolith indices for tracing the dominance of different grass subfamilies and tree cover density. We analyzed modern soil phytolith assemblages from sites over elevation gradients on Mount Kenya (Kenya), Mount Rungwe and around Lake Masoko (southern Tanzania). These data were compared with available botanical data. A phytolith index named Ic, proved to be an effective proxy of the proportions of Pooideae, Arundinoideae and Bambusoideae grasses (mainly C3 grasses) versus Panicoideae grasses (mainly C4 grasses), increasing with elevation in East-Africa. When tropical mountains are covered by open habitats (e.g. grasses and shrublands), Ic should be a reliable proxy of the C3/C4 grass composition. These results highlight the value of the phytolith index Ic, when interpreting paleo-environmental records from tropical mountains, to: 1) better understand past local and regional C3/C4 grass distributions and associated climatic changes and 2) increase the set of C3/C4 data available for model/data comparisons.  相似文献
