ABSTRACT

“Panta Rhei – Everything Flows” is the science plan for the International Association of Hydrological Sciences scientific decade 2013–2023. It is founded on the need for improved understanding of the mutual, two-way interactions occurring at the interface of hydrology and society, and their role in influencing future hydrologic system change. It calls for strategic research effort focused on the delivery of coupled, socio-hydrologic models. In this paper we explore and synthesize opportunities and challenges that socio-hydrology presents for data-driven modelling. We highlight the potential for a new era of collaboration between data-driven and more physically-based modellers that should improve our ability to model and manage socio-hydrologic systems. Crucially, we approach data-driven, conceptual and physical modelling paradigms as being complementary rather than competing, positioning them along a continuum of modelling approaches that reflects the relative extent to which hypotheses and/or data are available to inform the model development process.

A three dimensional rectangular grid model is applied to resolve the temperature–salinity dynamics of Ruwais, a segment of the UAE coast which is well known as dense water formation zone. The model employs a heat flux module and a turbulence closure scheme that facilitate realistic calculation of temperature–salinity dynamics. A field survey campaign is carried out to support the modeling study, involving measurements of tide, currents, temperature, and salinity. Investigation is done for two meteorologically extreme conditions, i.e. summer and winter. The model study showed that the western flux develops an anticlockwise circulation in the study area. The water industrial discharges elevated the temperature and salinity of the water near the southeastern shoreline. This water mass propagated towards north under the influence of gravity.  相似文献

The oil sands industry has committed to returning the mine sites to a productive condition. The reconstructed soil covers must have sufficient available water holding capacity (AWHC) to supply enough moisture over the growing season, to promote vegetation. In order to assess the sustainability of various soil cover alternatives, a generic, system dynamic watershed model entitled GSDW was used along with the available historical meteorological records to estimate the maximum soil moisture deficit and annual evapotranspiration fluxes. A probabilistic framework was adopted; consequently, frequency curves of the maximum annual moisture deficit values are constructed and used to assess the probability that various reconstructed and natural watersheds can provide the associated moisture demands. In general, the study showed a tendency for the reconstructed watershed to provide less moisture for evapotranspiration than natural systems. Watersheds of various soil types, layering, thicknesses and topography were studied. The gained knowledge was used to predict the possible performance of a hypothetical reclamation cover. The results indicated that the hypothetical cover performed in a similar manner to the thickest existing soil cover which confirmed a high probability of that cover to survive under the same existing climatic conditions. Moreover, this probabilistic framework was found to be useful for integrating information gained from natural watersheds (e.g. the canopy of mature natural systems and transfer the results to the reconstructed system). The results show that the canopy influenced the moisture deficit regime positively which signifies a greater possibility that reconstructed covers will adapt to vegetation type. In brief, the adopted approach enables better understanding of the response of reconstructed systems via multiple simulations of ‘what‐if’ scenarios using different soil/vegetation alternatives. The complexity of the evapotranspiration process and its variability in time and space have imposed some limitations on previously developed evapotranspiration models. In this study, two data‐driven models: genetic programming (GP) and artificial neural networks (ANNs), and statistical regression models were developed and compared for estimating the hourly eddy covariance (EC)‐measured actual evapotranspiration (AET) using meteorological variables. The utility of the investigated data‐driven models was also compared with that of HYDRUS‐1D model, which makes use of conventional Penman–Monteith (PM) model for the prediction of AET. The latent heat (LE), which is measured using the EC method, is modelled as a function of five climatic variables: net radiation, ground temperature, air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed in a reconstructed landscape located in Northern Alberta, Canada. Several ANN models were evaluated using two training algorithms of Levenberg–Marquardt and Bayesian regularization. The GP technique was used to generate mathematical equations correlating AET to the five climatic variables. Furthermore, the climatic variables, as well as their two‐factor interactions, were statistically analysed to obtain a regression equation and to indicate the climatic factors having significant effect on the evapotranspiration process. HYDRUS‐1D model as an available physically based model was examined for estimating AET using climatic variables, leaf area index (LAI), and soil moisture information. The results indicated that all three proposed data‐driven models were able to approximate the AET reasonably well; however, GP and regression models had better generalization ability than the ANN model. The results of HYDRUS‐1D model exhibited that a physically based model, such as HYDRUS‐1D, might be comparable or even inferior to the data‐driven models in terms of the overall prediction accuracy. Based on the developed GP and regression models, net radiation and ground temperature had larger contribution to the AET process than other variables. In April 2013, a 7.0 Mw earthquake struck along the Longmen Shan fault in the city of Ya’an, Sichuan Province, China, causing serious damage. The invaluable contributions of the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in dealing with this disaster highlighted the significance of government–NGO relationships in post-disaster reconstruction and the effect this has on the efficiency and quality of post-disaster reconstruction. This paper examines government–NGO relationships (GNR) in the post-Lushan earthquake period as a multi-stakeholder collaborative problem based on organizational lifecycle perspectives through the birth, growth, stability, and saturation stages. Two-year field research was conducted in the affected areas which identified the GNR as a bridged government–NGO relationship (BGNR) during the reconstruction period, with the Ya’an service center acting as the bridging organization. The BGNR’s experience was compared to the previous Wenchuan earthquake, and the general BGNR post-disaster reconstruction situation is discussed on two dimensions: mutuality and organizational identity.  相似文献

This study aims at developing a generalized understanding of the sensitivity of soil moisture patterns in reconstructed watersheds, in northern Alberta, to changes in the projected precipitation in the twenty‐first century. The GSDW model is applied to three watersheds using climate scenarios generated using daily precipitation and air temperature output from a global climate model (CGCM3), under A2 and B1 emission scenarios, to simulate the corresponding soil moisture. CGCM3 results indicate an increase in the mean annual temperature for Fort McMurray, Alberta of 3·3 (A2) and 2·4 °C (B1), and an increase in the predicted annual precipitation of 34% (A2) and 8·6% with A2 and B1 emission scenarios, respectively. The GSDW model is used, along with onsite historical data, to downscale A2 and B1 emission scenarios and to evaluate the future hydrological performance of the designated watersheds with respect to soil moisture deficit and actual evapotranspiration using a probabilistic framework. The forecasted maximum soil moisture deficit values based on A2 and B1 emission scenarios are expected to decrease compared to those based on the current, largely because of the expected increase in precipitation rates, associated with an expected increase in evapotranspiration. Tree‐ring‐based reconstructions of paleo‐hydrology have proved useful for better understanding the irregularities and extent of past climate changes, and therefore, for more effective water resources management. Despite considerable advances in the field, there still exist challenges that introduce significant uncertainties into paleo‐reconstructions. This study outlines these challenges and address them by developing two themes: (1) the effect of temporal scaling on the strength of the relationship between the hydrologic variables, streamflow in this study, and tree growth rates and (2) the reconstruction uncertainty of streamflow due to the dissimilarity or inconsistency in the pool of tree‐ring chronologies (predictors in reconstruction) in a basin. Based on the insight gained, a methodology is developed to move beyond only relying on the annual hydrology‐growth correlations, and to utilize additional information embedded in the annual time series at longer time scales (e.g. multi‐year to decadal time scales). This methodology also generates an ensemble of streamflow reconstructions to formally account for uncertainty in the pool of chronology sites. The major headwater tributaries of the Saskatchewan River Basin, the main source of surface water in the Canadian Prairie Provinces, are used as the case study. It is shown that the developed methodology explains the variance of streamflows to a larger extent than the conventional approach and better preserves the persistence and variability of streamflows across time scales (Hurst‐type behaviour). The resulting ensemble of paleo‐hydrologic time series is able to more credibly pinpoint the timing and extent of past dry and wet periods and provides a dynamic range of uncertainty in reconstruction. This range varies with time over the course of the reconstruction period, indicating that the utility of tree‐ring chronologies for paleo‐reconstruction differs for different time periods over the past several centuries in the history of the region. The proposed ensemble approach provides a credible range of multiple‐century‐long water availability scenarios that can be used for vulnerability assessment of the existing water infrastructure and improving water resources management.
