The 1·13 Ga Ilímaussaq intrusive complex, SouthGreenland, is composed of various types of alkali granite andsilica-undersaturated alkaline to agpaitic nepheline syenitesrelated to three subsequently intruded magma batches. Mineralchemistry indicates continuous fractionation trends within eachrock type, but with distinct differences among them. The last, peralkaline magma batch is the most fractionated in terms ofXFemafic mineral, feldspar composition and mineral assemblage. This indicates that an evolving magma chamber at depth discontinuouslyreleased more highly fractionated alkaline melts. Fluid inclusionsin some sodalites record a pressure drop from 3·5 to1 kbar indicating that crystallization started during magmaascent and continued in the high-level magma chamber. On thebasis of phase equilibria and preliminary fluid inclusion data, crystallization temperature drops from >1000°C (augitesyenite liquidus) to <500°C (lujavrite solidus) and silicaactivity decreases from 相似文献

Facetted garnets formed by etching. Examples from sandstones of Late Triassic age, South Germany 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
GREGOR BORG 《Sedimentology》1986,33(1):141-146
Detrital garnets from the Upper Triassic (Keuper) of southern Germany have well developed facets where they occur in calcite-cemented sandstone. The grains belong to the pyralspite series and have a homogeneous chemical composition, without any zonation is revealed by microprobe analyses. It is concluded that the large facets are caused by etching during diagenesis and not by authigenic overgrowth. High calcium contents of the pore fluids may have been important in the formation of these garnet facets. 相似文献

The Puklen complex of the Mid-Proterozoic Gardar Province, SouthGreenland, consists of various silica-saturated to quartz-bearingsyenites, which are intruded by a peralkaline granite. The primarymafic minerals in the syenites are augite ± olivine +FeTi oxide + amphibole. Ternary feldspar thermometryand phase equilibria among mafic silicates yield T = 950750°C,aSiO2 = 0·71 and an fO2 of 13 log unitsbelow the fayalitemagnetitequartz (FMQ) bufferat 1 kbar. In the granites, the primary mafic minerals are ilmeniteand Li-bearing arfvedsonite, which crystallized at temperaturesbelow 750°C and at fO2 values around the FMQ buffer. Inboth rock types, a secondary post-magmatic assemblage overprintsthe primary magmatic phases. In syenites, primary Ca-bearingminerals are replaced by Na-rich minerals such as aegirineaugiteand albite, resulting in the release of Ca. Accordingly, secondaryminerals include ferro-actinolite, (calcitesiderite)ss,titanite and andradite in equilibrium with the Na-rich minerals.Phase equilibria indicate that formation of these minerals tookplace over a long temperature interval from near-magmatic temperaturesdown to 相似文献

The early augite syenite unit in the 1·13-Ga-old Ilímaussaqintrusive complex, South Greenland, consists of a magmatic assemblageof ternary alkali feldspar + fayalitic olivine + augite + titanomagnetite+ apatite + baddeleyite ± nepheline ± quartz ±ilmenite ± zircon. Feldspar, nepheline and QUILF thermometryyield T = 1000700°C, at P = 1 kbar, which is derivedfrom fluid inclusion data from other parts of the complex. Ternaryfeldspar was the first major liquidus phase. It crystallizedat temperatures between 950 and 1000°C from a homogeneousmagma with aSiO2 = 0·8 and fO2 about 1·52log units below the fayalitemagnetitequartz (FMQ)buffer. Later, closed system fractionation produced nepheline-bearingassemblages with aSiO2 = 0·4 and log fO2 = FMQ 3 to FMQ 5. Assimilation of wall rocks produced localvariations of melt composition. Four traverses through the unitwere sampled parallel to the assumed direction of crystallization. They exhibit significant differences in their mineral assemblagesand compositions. The chemical zoning and calculated intensiveparameters of four sample suites reflect both closed systemfractional crystallization and local assimilation of wall rocks. Sediment transport and bedforms in a carbonate tidal inlet; Lee Stocking Island, Exumas, Bahamas 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An active oolitic sand wave was monitored for a period of 37 days in order to address the relationship between the direction and strength of tidal currents and the resultant geometry, and amount and direction of migration of bedforms in carbonate sands. The study area is situated in a tidal channel near Lee Stocking Island (Exumas, Bahamas) containing an estimated 5.5 to 6 × 105 m3 of mobile oolitic sand. Tidal ranges within the inlet are microtidal and the maximum current velocity at the studied site is 0.6 m s?1. At least 300–400 m3 of mostly oolitic sand are formed within, or brought into, the channel area every year. The tidal inlet is subdivided into an ocean-orientated segment, in which sand waves are shaped by both flood and ebb tides, and a platform-orientated segment, where sand waves are mainly shaped by flood tides. The studied sand wave lies on the platformward flood-tide dominated segment in a water depth of 3.5.4.5 m. During the 37 days of observation, the oolitic and bioclastic sand wave migrated 4 m in the direction of the dominant flood current. The increments of migration were directly related to the strength of the tide. During each tidal cycle, bedforms formed depending on the strength of the tidal current, tidal range and their location on the sand wave. During flood tides, a steep lee and a gentle stoss side formed and current ripples and small dunes developed on the crest of the sand wave, while the trough developed only ripples. The average lee slope of the sand wave is 24.2°, and therefore steeper than typical siliciclastic sand waves. During ebb tides, portions of the crest are eroded creating a convex upward ebb stoss side, covered with climbing cuspate and linguoid ripples and composite dunes. The area between the ebb-lee side and the trough is covered with fan systems, sinuous ripples and dunes. The migration of all bedforms deviated to a variable degree from the main current direction, reflecting complex flow patterns in the tidal inlet. Small bedforms displayed the largest deviation, migrating at an angle of up to 90° and more to the dominant current direction during spring tides. 相似文献

Cold‐water coral mound morphology and development are thought to be controlled primarily by current regime. This study, however, reveals a general lack of correlation between prevailing bottom current direction and mound morphology (i.e. footprint shape and orientation), as well as current strength and mound size (i.e. footprint area and height). These findings are based on quantitative analyses of a high‐resolution geophysical dataset collected with an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle from three cold‐water coral mound sites at the toe of slope of Great Bahama Bank. The three sites (80 km2 total) have an average of 14 mounds km?2, indicating that the Great Bahama Bank slope is a major coral mound region. At all three sites living coral colonies are observed on the surface of the mounds, documenting active mound growth. Morphometric analysis shows that mounds at these sites vary significantly in height (1 to 83 m), area (81 to 6 00 000 m2), shape (mound aspect ratio 0·1 to 1) and orientation (mound longest axis 0 to 180°). The Autonomous Underwater Vehicle measured bottom current data depict a north–south flowing current that reverses approximately every six hours. The tidal nature of this current and its intermittent deviations during reversals are interpreted to contribute to the observed mound complexity. An additional factor contributing to the variability in mound morphometrics is the sediment deposition rate that varies among and within sites. At most locations sedimentation rate lags slightly behind mound growth rate, causing mounds to develop into large structures. Where sedimentation rates are higher than mound growth rates, sediment partially or completely buries mounds. The spatial distribution and alignment of mounds can also be related to gravity mass deposits, as indicated by geomorphological features (for example, slope failure and linear topographic highs) in the three‐dimensional bathymetry. In summary, variability in sedimentation rates, current regime and underlying topography produce extraordinarily high variability in the distribution, development and morphology of coral mounds on the Great Bahama Bank slope. 相似文献

In Central Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica, rare metre-sizedlenses of spinel peridotite are enclosed in high-grade metamorphicrocks. The rocks experienced a medium-P granulite-facies metamorphismat 575 Ma and a low-P amphibolite-facies overprint at 530 Ma.The latter is probably related to extensive granitoid magmatismbetween 530 and 500 Ma, which produced large volumes (abouthalf of the outcrops today) of granitic to syenitic rocks aswell as abundant K-feldsparquartz pegmatites. One ofthe spinel peridotite lenses in the Schirmacher Oasis of CentralDronning Maud Land is crosscut by several small (up to 10 cmwide) veins with a characteristic zoned sequence of mineralassemblages, which was formed by reaction of a hydrous, SiO2-saturatedfluid or pegmatitic melt with the peridotite. The zoned sequenceconsists of the following mineral assemblages (from the centreof the vein towards the outer margin): zone 0, plagioclase +quartz; zone 1, green biotite intergrown with zircon + clinoamphibole;zone 2, cummingtonite + dark brown biotite intergrown with rutile+ clinoamphibole; zone 3, cummingtonite + light brown biotite+ spinel; zone 4, olivine + orthopyroxene + spinel ±clinopyroxene (unaltered peridotite). This sequence was investigatedwith respect to its conditions of formation, modal mineralogy, mineral chemistry, fluid inclusions, and oxygen and hydrogenisotope compositions of selected minerals. Based on the stabilityof cummingtonite and on equilibrium calculations in the MgOSiO2H2Osystem and on quartzbiotite oxygen isotope thermometry, the reaction vein formed at 650°C, which is in accord withtypical pegmatite crystallization temperatures. The pegmatiteof zone 0 is interpreted to have formed in an open fissure whereas,on textural grounds, zone 3 replaces former peridotite. On thebasis of mass balance constraints, the boundary between zones1 and 2 is interpreted to approximately represent the formerboundary between peridotite and the open fissure before reaction.Oxygen isotope systematics show that the infiltrating fluidhad an isotopic composition of 910 SMOW. All mineralsof the reaction vein with the exception of the inherited spineland olivine in the adjacent peridotite are in equilibrium withsuch a fluid. Spinel in the peridotite is depleted in 18O comparedwith coexisting olivine, which suggests isotopic disequilibrium.Spinel in zone 3 has a distinctly different isotopic compositioncompared with that in the peridotite, apparently approachingbut not reaching equilibrium. The combination of mineral chemistryand mass balance constraints of the modal mineralogy constrainsthe volume change during metasomatism and the direction of elementaldiffusion. It is indicated that Mg, Cr and Ni always diffusedtowards the vein, whereas Si, Al, K, Na, H2O and possibly Fediffused into the peridotite. Carbonate turbidite sequences deposited in rift-basins of the Jurassic Tethys Ocean (eastern Alps, Switzerland) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
GREGOR P. EBERLI 《Sedimentology》1987,34(3):363-388
Syn-rift sediments in basins formed along the future southern continental margin of the Jurassic Tethys ocean, comprise, in the eastern Alps of Switzerland, up to 500 m thick carbonate turbidite sequences interbedded with bioturbated marls and limestones. In the fault-bounded troughs no submarine fans developed; in contrast, the fault scarps acted as a line source and the asymmetric geometry as well as the evolution of the basin determined the distribution of redeposited carbonates. The most abundant redeposits are bio- and lithoclastic grainstones and packstones, with sedimentary structures indicating a wide range of transport mechanisms from grain flow to high- and low-density turbidity currents. Huge chaotic megabreccias record catastrophic depositional events. Their main detrital components are Upper Triassic shallow-water carbonates and skeletal debris from nearby submarine highs. After an event of extensional tectonism, sedimentary prisms accumulated in the basins along the faults. Each prism is wedge-shaped with a horizontal upper boundary and consists of a thinning- and fining-upward megacycle. Within each megacycle six facies associations are distinguished. At the base of the fault scarp, an association of breccias was first deposited by submarine rockfall and rockfall avalanches. A narrow, approximately 4000 m wide depression along the fault was subsequently filled by the megabreccia association, in which huge megabreccias interfinger with thin-bedded turbidites and hemipelagic limestones. The thick-bedded turbidite association covered the megabreccias or formed, farther basinward, the base of the sedimentary column. Within the thick-bedded turbidites, thinning- and fining-upward cycles are common. The overlying thin-bedded turbidite association shows nearly no cyclicity and the monotonous sequence of fine-grained calciturbidites covers most of the basin area. With continuous filling and diminishing sediment supply, a basin-plain association developed comprising fine-grained and thin-bedded turbidites intercalated with bioturbated marls and limestones. On the gentle slopes opposite the fault escarpment, redeposited beds are scarce and marl/limestone alternations as well as weakly nodular limestones prevail. 相似文献

The Grønnedal-Ika complex is dominated by layered nephelinesyenites which were intruded by a xenolithic syenite and a centralplug of calcite to calcitesiderite carbonatite. Aegirineaugite, alkali feldspar and nepheline are the major mineral phases inthe syenites, along with rare calcite. Temperatures of 680910°Cand silica activities of 0·280·43 weredetermined for the crystallization of the syenites on the basisof mineral equilibria. Oxygen fugacities, estimated using titanomagnetitecompositions, were between 2 and 5 log units above the fayalitemagnetitequartzbuffer during the magmatic stage. Chondrite-normalized REE patternsof magmatic calcite in both carbonatites and syenites are characterizedby REE enrichment (LaCNYbCN = 1070). Calcite fromthe carbonatites has higher Ba (5490 ppm) and lower HREE concentrationsthan calcite from the syenites (54106 ppm Ba). This isconsistent with the behavior of these elements during separationof immiscible silicatecarbonate liquid pairs. Nd(T =1·30 Ga) values of clinopyroxenes from the syenites varybetween +1·8 and +2·8, and Nd(T) values of whole-rockcarbonatites range from +2·4 to +2·8. Calcitefrom the carbonatites has 18O values of 7·8 to 8·6and 13C values of 3·9 to 4·6. 18Ovalues of clinopyroxene separates from the nepheline syenitesrange between 4·2 and 4·9. The average oxygenisotopic composition of the nepheline syenitic melt was calculatedbased on known rockwater and mineralwater isotopefractionation to be 5·7 ± 0·4. Nd and COisotope compositions are typical for mantle-derived rocks anddo not indicate significant crustal assimilation for eithersyenite or carbonatite magmas. The difference in 18O betweencalculated syenitic melts and carbonatites, and the overlapin Nd values between carbonatites and syenites, are consistentwith derivation of the carbonatites from the syenites via liquidimmiscibility.
